The 'why' is way more interesting than the actual story and lore. For me, the reason why that is good is that it mirrors many aspects of Battlestar Galactica lore that also translate well today.
Horizon definitely has the potential to be a long lasting franchise with all the subordinate functions that became self aware and escaped; each installment could be chasing down each function to put a stop to their shenanigans.
I would even go for a spinoff prequel that takes place during the creation of Zero Dawn. I'd love to see those massive battles even if there's no hope of winning.
I remember when I bought my PS4 and Zero Dawn was one of the free games offered and I was like "meh, sure why not. I'll probably not play it that much". Then I absolutely fell in love with it. Not to "brag" but just to chime in on that, I thought I spent about 150 but my PS5 has a log thing and it said 180. Seems a bit high but I remember having 150 at least. That's with the Frozen Wilds. It's my second highest playtime only after AC Origins. Anyway point is I loved exploring and doing everything, like it took a long time to feel like you had enough with the game. In fact this was my first Platinum and I had never really cared about trophies. It was just organic as I wanted to do every single thing in the game. Now I use trophies to guide me to do everything possible in games I really love, if it doesn't just happen as I play (that is the best way).
@@Wingnut353 Interesting. All I remember is that the perk tree in the original became kinda useless by mid game and I barely payed attention to it by end game. I probably won't play the sequel until a year or so from now when I can get it on discount because Elden Ring will probably be the only game I can fit into my currently limited free time. But I plan to seeing how Horizon has improved at some point.
The good thing about having a game where the only problems are few bugs you occasionally experience is that it can always be updated. Once the bugs are updated, this would be perfect.
You know the game is that good when Sony, who hates releasing unfinished product, actually hands out review copies despite knowing they'll tell people there's some issues.
ACG you legend. Knowing your review landed had me loading up TH-cam like a kid on Christmas day. Not disappointed. I loved the first game and dlc. I am not into trophies in the slightest but it was one I managed to platinum. Will play and wait for further patches. Cheers mate
Watch the Gamespot review. They said there is too much crap in regards to weapons and it becomes really annoying too many times during combat. There is also no clear way to distinguish quickly whether the next weapon you get is better than the one you have etc. Why they couldn't just do a clear comparison like so many games these days when you go to pick something up is anyone's guess. Tombraider still does this better than most with their skill system. They gave the game just an 8 out of 10 which is hardly Game of the year worthy lol. I really thought they would prioritise gameplay over anything else this time around as there were so many boring holes in the first game that needed to be plugged but now they went too much the other way.

Getting this game and God of War Ragnarok in the same year is a great treat for PlayStation players. Gran Turismo 7 drops in a few weeks too. Damn! I’ve been loving SIFU, but once this game drops I’m moving on to Forbidden West. 🔥

It's checkerboard 1800p which is very close to native 1080p if you know how checkerboard works. Still better but let's not pretend this is native 1800p
@Van Dammage it's running at 3200x1800p with drops to 2880x1620 in demanding areas. 2k resolution is 2560x1440p So that means Horizon Forbidden West runs always at higher res than 2k in 60fps mode. So what are you talking about when it comes to 1080p? (Source: IGN)
@@MacikSeba It's checkerboard 1800p, not native, which means it's constructed from a base of 1600*1800 per frame, not a native 3200*1800. However I disagree with him in that it can definitely look a generation ahead of native 1080p depending on implementation.
@@MacikSeba no it's not. You're either misinformed or don't know how checkerboard works. 30fps mode is NATIVE 4K = 8.3m native pixels 60fps mode is checkerboard 1800p = 2.88m native pixels Huge difference and not even close. 1080p = 2.1m native pixels So basically native rendertarget is VERY close to 1080p. If camera is completely still and no objects/assets are moving then you get 1800p quality. But that's not happening in any game. Checkerboard needs motionblur which is all over this game and typical for CB games because it smears/blurs those checkerboard artifacts but also defies the purpose of high resolution and high framerate. Not saying CB is bad just saying it's not comparable to native resolution, and checkerboard 4K would have been a better choice. Higher native fidelity and no need for further scaling.
Epic review! Xbox player here, but definitely Sony knows how to be on the top of this console generation with releases like this one. It looks fantastic! It' safe to assume that single player experiences are protected. Peace to you all.
Ive always been a Playstation player since the very first 1, but I will admit, I really want a Series X for Starfield, been following that game since it was just words on the screen..
@v cam Thats the plan, just had to choose one over the other, and since Ive been a PS person for so long, choose it first, but now that everything is being bought buy MS or Sony, gonna need both systems..
Hearing you go through the audio section as you describe testing it through different setups had me yelling at my phone: God, I fucking LOVE this guy! Thank you for all your hard work especially when it comes to this area!🙏 I don't know of any other reviewer that is as detailed and thorough in this area as @ACG.
I just had an urge to say this: thanks for all of your hard work and your great content! No matter if I agree or disagree with your assessment I am always entertained and I feel better after watching your videos. Massive kudos!!! 👍
With Aloy's eye bug, that seems to be a automatic LookAt bug where her eye lookAt's looks at another dialogue actor in the scene and not the one she is suppose to talk to. Thats just an educated guess and given the size of the game and no of systems at play some things where bound to slip trough the cracks in terms of bugs.
Another one like this was when I landed a scrapper or something on top of the area where I was having a dialog with the salvage collector .... for half the cut scene I was staring at the back of a robot.
@@TFalconwing I work with game animation and I know both feel and the pain that someone at GS must be feeling when this happens and I find it hilarious :)

Crazy to think that Guerrilla cut their teeth on FPS games. I’m not all the into Horizon, personally, but I understand that it is a great game. And I commend them for stepping out of their comfort zone to make a gorgeous and eminence world and got it right the first time.
I believe Sony just trust their first party devs and give them full creative freedom to create what they’re want to create. And not every devs has the balls to even create something new and out of their confort zone.Coming from corridor first person shooter to openworld action rpg is a hard thing to achieve.
@@sakuragi1062 Well of course of Sony trust their first party studios. If they didn’t trust their studios we never would have gotten God of War(2018), Returnal, The Spider-Man(2018)/Miles Morales, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, and many others.
I played Horizon Forbidden West for 68 hours without having it crash. I also only ran into a few issues with quests but it was nothing too bad. The new update with new game plus has a few issues with people who have played over 100 hours right now but it will probably be fixed soon.
When it comes to a video game of the scope there is one thing I have learnt throughout the years. No game is perfect. I originally got horizon zero Dawn knowing nothing about the game. just taking a chance from what a friend told me. I know for a fact this game will not come out 100% bug proof because let’s face it it’s not even possible. One of my favourite games for the PS5 so far is ratchet and clank with the part and even that had a couple bugs but none of them were game breaking. The main thing that’s drawing me to this game is it’s exactly the same as the original with added improvements so I know what I am getting. A fun game I can play at my own pace and it’s going to have a good story and the story is the main thing that matters to me most. February 18 cannot come quick enough
Y’know, I’ve been watching these reviews and using their information for years. It’s mind blowing you don’t have millions of subs yet. They’re on the way. This is my favorite review source. Thank you for the upload, mate ✊
I said i will get Elden Ring for these months, too much of a backlog here... i was kidding myself i am getting this as well dammit. P.s.: Cauldrons totally impressed me in its predecessor. I mean the world building was absolutely amazing. The lighting...oh man
I usually like to just walk around in Horizon Zero Dawn world, i know some really beautiful places there. Now i imagine i will spend like 200 hours probably just looking at this gorgeous world of Horizon FW, just slowly walking in these amazing locations while some ambient music is playing in the background. I actually got so overpowered in zero dawn that killing machines became somewhat boring regardless of the combat being the most unique experience among the games.
The video title had me concerned because I'm very excited to play this game, but I half expected your review to say that it's so buggy that I should just wait for the game to be patched sometime in the near future. I'm relieved that, apparently, that does not seem to be the case. Great review. Can't wait to play it.
ACG seems to be following the current trend of "if its Sony exclusive find something negative and focus on it" like many other tubers on Microsofts payroll. (Not saying he is). But why else would you put THAT in the title? Same with the barely glossed over "bit of a wet blanket " comment. Not the first time in recent I've noticed these things.
Another god-tier review. These sorts of breakdowns of each individual system are unheard of outside or your channel and I appreciate you. Excited for this game; even more excited for Elden Ring; and almost as excited for your review of Elden Ring as I am for the game itself. Especially knowing I can trust you to break it all down while also respecting a player’s desire not to be spoiled. Thanks for all of your work.
I can wait for the day 1 patch, the week 1 patch, the big bad patch, the expansion, the definitive edition, the PC port, the patches for that, and the deep sale, np. Just modern AAA game things.
@@HighLanderPonyYT lmao, that is so true now days. That said I will be beta testing this game as it is the only reason my ps4 has not been put back in it's box.

If it wasn't ready they they should have delayed it and cleaned up these issues with crashing as much as possible but those eyes make the game unplayable lol. The exact same issue people had with Mass Effect Andromeda and now it's crept into this engine as well lol
9:41 Really? Interesting, I never heard that, I always thought she was amazing, perfectly sarcastic and confident. Aloy's voiceactor was one of the highlights from the first game for me. It also helped I think she was written amazingly, her reactions to all the weird things felt very natural and I remember thinking many time, "Yeah, that's pretty much what I would say"
Pumped for this. The first one was one of the best open world games I’ve ever played. The story is one of the most underrated sci-fi stories too. But I think I’ll wait a year before playing. I really want to play this game after all the bugs have been ironed out. Reminds me of the Witcher 3. I waited a couple years after multiple patches and when I finally got around to playing it, I had a really seamless technical experience.
I was flabbergasted when you said performance was 1080p, then Digital foundry said 1800p and my brain exploded with confusion. Thanks for clearing that up and fixing my brain :)
Wonderful video review as always Karak. After the slight disappointment that is Dying Light 2, I am so glad Horizon Forbidden West is picking up the slack for the remainder of February 2022. Can't wait to watch your review on Elden Ring next!
I’d like dying light 2 better if the dialogue skip bug was patched out. That aside the games a 7 off of the gameplay alone since the story is barely interesting.
@@mjtechnoviking44 agreed. Hardcore fan of the first one but even I have to admit DL2 falls short in a number of the in-game activities especially the copy paste GRE, windmill, electricity/water and metro locations. Whole world feels rushed and it shows sadly.

You have to be joking lol. It was terrible , clunky animation , terrible climbing, awful Human AI and next to no environment interaction. At least some of that has been addressed in the sequel but the QC is severely lacking.
My issue with games that give you that " ohmy god i can go there" thought usually comes to me with " but do I have to and wanna?". Zero dawn was good but damn exploring that world was a boring chore. Hope this is better.
@@Shige2213 Skyrim always gave me a feeling of reward for going out of my way that felt worth it and encouraged it. Zero dawn would usually end with me just realizing I have to walk farther to go where I’m supposed to now and all I got was more crafting stuff I have tons of.
Pretty much. There wasn't any kind of mysterious or cool reward that made exploration viable. Most of the weapons you could pretty much find at the merchant, which is bad business.

@@deskmanatee I'm with you 100%, same experience I had. Far Cry 3 but with robo dinosaurs, y'know? The good thing about having a game where the only problems are few bugs you occasionally experience is that it can always be updated. Once the bugs are updated, this would be perfect.
And if there's only a few bugs for a game that isn't released yet, that means a tiny day one patch. This is excellent news!

So what's the doggystyle of weapons? Slingshots?

Edit: had a mini heart attack when I saw 1080p, glad it's 1800, just saw the correction!
It's checkerboard 1800p which is very close to native 1080p if you know how checkerboard works. Still better but let's not pretend this is native 1800p
@@vandammage1747 looks Nothing like 1080
@Van Dammage it's running at 3200x1800p with drops to 2880x1620 in demanding areas.
2k resolution is 2560x1440p
So that means Horizon Forbidden West runs always at higher res than 2k in 60fps mode.
30fps mode is NATIVE 4K = 8.3m native pixels
60fps mode is checkerboard 1800p = 2.88m native pixels
Huge difference and not even close.
1080p = 2.1m native pixels
So basically native rendertarget is VERY close to 1080p.

With Aloy's eye bug, that seems to be a automatic LookAt bug where her eye lookAt's looks at another dialogue actor in the scene and not the one she is suppose to talk to. So agreed
I believe Sony just trust their first party devs and give them full creative freedom to create what they’re want to create. And not every devs has the balls to even create something new and out of their confort zone.Coming from corridor first person shooter to openworld action rpg is a hard thing to achieve.

@@CHRISTisKing197 I'm with you on this one. I have started Demon souls, and it is an interesting change of pace. It takes a little more time to learn than what I would appreciate. I might try and get back into it at some point, but it's not very high on my backlog.
I really really like the motion sensor aiming on the controller. Such a nice touch
Amazing review thanks a lot already pre ordered the special edition I can't wait for it
My most anticipated game of the year. It looks so gorgeous!
Its impressive as hell at times
@@ACGreviews which is/was your most anticipated of February?
Nice, I'm really glad to hear that you like it. Unfortunate that its buggy but it seems to be an improvement on every way to the first game!
First releases are, even with the best, always a bit buggy. It's the games job to keep you in anyway, some fail but looks like this doesn't and will in time fix that!
Big open world games are always buggy at first, look at red dead and red dead 2.
Pretty much impossible to make them 100% stable.
This is review code remember so prob be a day one patch and I agree with others about hard not too for the size of the game
@@Dreadpirateflappy games have way too much detail nowadays making it damn near impossible to look for every bug so they rely on the playerbase to find the bugs and report them its unfortunate but its just how it is
Cyberpunk has made me immune to these teeny bugs.
This game, for me’ is a testament of the incredible potential devs can get out of the PS4.
True. But imagine what it would look like if it was developed purely for PS5!
Its all about optimisation and dedication of developers. Almost every game studio nowadays are fucking liars that cant make a game run on last gen yet they fucking demand $60 for it. Now with Guerilla showing that they can make their game run like that on ps4 is proving that game devs are spoiled greedy assholes that dont want to do their job but still want to get paid
@@lemming9984 The next Game will answer that question.
Kyle Hill is so great. The most watched channel for me hands down.
It’s cliche around these parts, but here for the only review that really matters. Thank you!
