Another tip: never place your hi hats right under your kick. Put it slightly after or before the kick. So the kick comes more forward. It also creates more bounce to your beats 😉

Definitely agree on the randomizer - less is more there. I typically put like a 3-8% randomness on velocity and manually set the groove to help make loops sound a lot less static, almost adds a bit of a "round robin" effect. Subtle variation does a lot to alleviate ear fatigue. Sometimes a super subtle randomized pitch shift goes a long way too.

awesome guidance. I made a quick track and thought "man i don't wanna touch percussion, it's difficult and stressful." but barely even a third into the "Beginner" section of the vid I paused it, went back to my track, effortlessly came up with and applied some percussion to my track, and i love it so much more. Thanks!

One thing I learned back in the FL 3x days is using a Layer channel to group all the drum samples I want to use (in the setting panel, change the grouping to split children), then that way I can control all the drum samples from one piano roll. Saves time for the majority of stuff I'm doing. If I'm editing individual parameters of different samples, I just select the key that sample falls on, then make my edits

Solid tips without excess hype or self-promotion, well done. Might I add- it never hurts to learn to "play" whatever drums you're using (just be sure you've got a low-latency setup and at least velocity); I started with a Korg M1 and an early Mac DAW called Vision, which let me practice playing the drumkits along with whatever, then seeing on the MIDI track what the timing differences were between quantized and, say, a Purdie shuffle.😉

Sorry, I’m a little late to this party. Just stumbled across this clip tonight.
The best piece of advice here, and it is so often overlooked due to the randomizers and generators out there, is to get manual with it. Build it. Create it. Experiment with it. Put your style on to it. And if you are a beginner just dipping your toes into this pool, THIS is how you develop your style. Break the ice. Take a chance. Be willing to make a mistake. Finding out what doesn’t work is just as important as knowing what does.
There is great information in this clip on how to do it, and what comes with each level of progression.
You can control the what, the where, and the when, as long as you’re willing to try.
Compositions are way better when you use your own beat loops. And when you make your own, with all the tools these modern programs come with, not only will your beats be more satisfying to you, you’ll be that much more savvy when it comes to producing all the other elements of your jam. Get manual with it. It’s worth it.

It really does wonders. Really pro stuff is to sampling that again - sampling your own stuff in the end. Have fun!
