    I remember when I started learning chess at around 12-13 years old, my chess teacher told me, I have a chance to became pretty good but I'm too old to ever become a grandmaster. This single sentence affected me so hard as a kid, after that day I lost all motivation to play the game, I started skipping lessons and eventually stopped attending entirely and never played competitively ever since. Even if it's not realistic to achieve a goal like that, you should never tell a kid that they started too late.

    I feel like this is less about the age you start and more about how much time you put into it. The younger you are, the more time you have, it's the opposite when you get older. When you get older you have responsibilities to take care of and not nearly as much time as before, but if you can find a way to make time to study chess I feel like you could absolutely become a GM, way later than the age of 15. It all depends on the time you put into it.

    • @toziassmitt
      @toziassmitt ปีที่แล้ว +8

      5 hours a day, over one year, is around 2,000 hours. Let’s agree that from 5-18 you usually have around 5 hours free per day to practice- that’s 26,000 hours of practice that someone who started at 5 years old will have, over, someone who started at 18. For the 18 year old to catch up, even if they study chess for 8 hours a day (!), and literally do nothing else with their life but study chess… would take 8 and a half years of studying chess non stop every day. That’s just to catch up with the kid who is now 18- now think, that child prodigy 18 year old isn’t even a GM yet (likely) and it will take him years to reach GM. Are you getting now a sense of how important it is to study as a child? Those free hours, those long days of no work, no rent, no stress, just free time… they’re invaluable. All this is without even mentioning the fact that when you’re younger you pickup things faster and hold onto them easier as they form foundations in your mind- it’s much easier for a 12 year old to learn something than a 32 year old

      @RaniaIsAwesome 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It would be nice if this is how it worked but I'm afraid not. If it was you would have 35 year olds who started playing through covid or something and realized how good they were and climbing the world's elite, that doesn't happen. Trying to teach someone over 60 even the rules is difficult. Your brain has to be wired correctly from youth, then it can perform well even when old. But if it's something completely new old brains can't learn it - you can't teach an old dog new tricks. It's like how when the internet came out first hardly any elderly people ever used it, it was double-dutch to them. Now they all use it, because they were young enough to pick it up when it first started getting mainstream.

    I didn't learn chess until my last year of college; trust me when I tell you that's way too late to expect to ever be very good after then. Chess is like a language, if you learn it late, you'll always have that accent and stumble, you never see the board as "one," and playing doesn't flow easily. You have to learn at an early age--no later than 8, imo.

    • @bored_chimpanzee
      @bored_chimpanzee ปีที่แล้ว

      8 is a little early I think, there are too many exceptions, like Boris Alterman, grandmaster who started at age 19. I think 15 is probably pretty much on point in most cases, if the person really wants to learn, is enthusiastic and not completely untalented.

    • @bored_chimpanzee
      @bored_chimpanzee ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markpodlesak7204 Firstly, why so aggressive? All I did was say that I dont think its impossible, to become a really good player, even if you start later in life. Answering to your question, in the last 20 years, none, but if you go back a little bit there are certainly many great players who started in their young to late teens, like Ye Jiangchuan or Mikhail Botvinnik. Ive never said that im 100% sure, but if a person is talented and under the right circumstances, im pretty sure its possible to become a IM or even GM, why wouldnt it? However, thats just my opinion, so yeah, do with this whatever you want lol

    To master Chess, you do not need to have a high IQ.
    To become a Grandmaster, you do; however, it is not a must to be good at chess if you are intelligent. In fact, your chess ability mostly depends on practice, and not intelligence. I know that IQ is not a great way of measuring intelligence; however, you can see that most chess gms do not have high IQs.
    Magnus and Bobby are around 190, Kasparov is 135 and Hikaru is only around 102. Most of the others are in between 100-120 scorewise (average).

Then for a long period of time i haven't been playing cause my classmates stopped being interested in playing the game so did i, and i started my new journey only at 16-17. • @toziassmitt
      @toziassmitt ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. It’s simply a matter of time. 10-18 is 8 years. That person who studied from 10-18 will have an 8 year advantage over the 18 year old who starts tomorrow. Doesn’t matter how dedicated you are, that 8 year gap will always be there. Also, those are the prime years. Adults have to work, pay bills, do laundry, make meals, pay bills, etc. It’s not feasible for most adults to study chess 5 hours a day, but for kids, it’s absolutely possible and happens across the world. So in your 8 years, it’s highly likely that you’re not going to put in as many hours as the younger kid did

    This is true for everything. You can’t become a master at an instrument if you don’t play it all your life, or a top rated athlete in any sport for example. But that doesn’t mean you can’t become good, or even super good, just because you cannot become the best of the best.
