      It was not a difficult decision by WC. Either sac exchange for 3 piece and dynamic position (good for blitz) or anish wouldn't just have a solid advantage, but little counter chance for magnus.

      @@randymctavish3728 i love Monday morning quarterbacks. it was a masterpiece of a game. you make it sound like this would be an easy choice in the moment, when Giri would be making you look silly from any position. this game was art well beyond just the sacrifice/imbalanced exchange. i’m a decent player, and this game had me scratching my head move after move. Even Giri was visibly confused at times.

      Somehow feels its a bit overrated. Not that I dislike Carlsen. But once you choose to exchange your queen for three minor pieces, thats what you ought to do. Put the two knights in a position where they defend each other and away from the opponents pawn range. Not just versus queen, if you are facing a rook versus 2 knights scenario, thats one of the default strategies. To have your knights protect each other and then use your king in a more aggressive role.

    • @jout738
      @jout738 2 ปีที่แล้ว +279

      This is why many players who early attack with the queen lose, because they dont get to attack the queen or eat anything valuable, while their queen gets all the time threathen and so they dont want to lose their queen, so keep moving it, while the other player just keeps developing his pieces to get big advantage, when the other player wasted so many turns with moving his queen around trying to attack and get through.

  • @dm9910
    @dm9910 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2352

    One of the things that's so striking about Magnus on defense is how willing he is to play ugly moves when necessary to hold his position together, and somehow untangle later . For a short while it seemed like Giri was piling on the pressure and forcing some concessions and it was hard to see how Magnus would get coordinated. Yet a few moves later Giri's initiative had completely evaporated and his heavy pieces were unable to make a credible threat. And of course that's the quintessential Magnus style, but to see him pull it off against a 2700 in Blitz time control is something else.

    • @jout738

    I love this game, I'm mind blown by the fact that it breaks so many opening principles and yet two of them still stand: king safety and piece coordination. At the end of the day these two are the only thing that matter in chess. All the goats (Morphy, Tal, Fisher, Kasparov, Anand and Carlsen) know/knew that, it's incredible to watch
