The aim of the game with Doom Metal is to be slow, dark and HEAVY! So if you aren't into slow stuff you probably won't like much Candlemass or most other Doom bands. That being said if you are interested in other Candlemass songs to check out: A Sorcerer's Pledge - from the same album is the best song on the album IMO, although alot of what Chris complained about is still present, it does pick up the tempo a lot more though and isn't really repetitive. At The Gallows End - from the second album shows off Messiah's (considered Candlemass's classic vocalist) pipes, and is one of their best songs. Dark Reflections - another fan favourite song with Messiah. If you don't like any of these you probably just don't like Candlemass...

The slowness sounding almost forced. I.E like there always about to speed up. Was one of there critiques of this song. Is one of the main reason why i like this song.
May I suggest you check out the Oceans of Slumber's cover? That's how I discovered Solitude and while the cover is musically close to the original, the different vocals DO take it to another level, absolutely owning it to the extent that it's tough to imagine anyone else doing it, before or after.
Love Candlemass.🔥 But Solitude is not one of the tracks to start off with if your new to the band. Better tracks I would suggest are Dark Reflections, and Prophet. Doom metal is so underrated. 🤟
Eh... This one is kind of a take it or leave it...if I heard it playing at a party, I'd say there's a 71% change I wouldn't ask who's playing. Pretty much agree with the idea that there wasn't anything that really stood out to me while listening. Nice work fellas!
it's Doom Metal lol It's not that shitty Papa Roach, Linkin Park Limp Bizkit, Korn crap there we've suffered over the last 20+ years and it certainly ain't that generic Megadeth, Pantera, Metallica BS either. Candlemass were influenced by early Black Sabbath and took several steps down the "doomier" path. Awesome.
Metallica and Megadeth had their moments but it was long ago. Pantera is the most prominent example of a 100% macho, 0% IQ band, can totally see why they got so big. If you think of it, doom metal is the only trve metal there is. Most of modern metal is heavily influenced by t(h)rash, which in turn is more like extra-hardcore punk than actual metal. Then there is power metal of course, but it's just a huge mountain of cheese altogether...
I'm surprised about your opinion that the slowness felt forced. My thought is that it could have been even slower and that speed can give the feeling of beeing forced too. In it's very basic Doom metal is like picking out the slowest and heaviest songs by Black sabbath . Heaviness and slowness goes hand in hand and that is what its all about. A dark theme in the lyrics is common as it suits well to very slow and heavy metal.
I happen to love this song. Not only does it sound like it made it onto the soundtrack for DOOM, I think there's a dignity to the lyrics that is hard to come by elsewhere. Candlemass does something extremely well, in my opinion, that others don't. Sorry you didn't like it.

I like Mats Levén "era" a little better, sorry. But doom is not my thing, so probably I am totally wrong!!! 😝
