The only reason France colonized Vietnam was because of their trickery of the Catholic monarchy and their modern weapons. Once the Vietnamese got their hands on modern weapons they kicked the French back to Paris with their cocks up their ass. They did the same with the Japanese and they are the only ones to kick the USA's ass.
Vietnamese don't fuck around...they have been kicking Chinas ass for thousands of years. And no one surrounding them ever messes with them.

Some additional notes for those who want to know a little more:
Mongke Khan died during the Siege of Diaoyu Fortress, a walled self-sufficient hilltop city in the western part of Song China near Sichuan. Conflicting reports have him dying of dysentery, killed by a Song trebuchet shot, and killed by a Song archer. The death of Mongke caused the Mongolians to retreat, and it would be another 20 years or so before they'd try and siege the Diaoyu Fortress again.
To put a final end to the Mongolian empire, the Ming dynasty of China shattered the Yuan dynasty remnant, sacked the capital city Karakorum, then began centuries of imperialism as it played Mongol houses against each other (typical ancient Chinese policy to keep the nomads disunited).

Overall nice, (especially in presentation!) But the period after Mongke's death wasn't great. Hulegu withdrew from Syria, yes, but not to Karakorum and stayed in his own territory, soon fighting Berke Khan in 1262.
Likewise, Kublai wasn't inspired to continue on how battles because of Ayn Jalut, which certainly had no impact on his decisions. Rather, immediate strategic concerns were of greater concern, as was concern to build up his continued military reputation for making his claim to the Great Khanate (Kublai had had little for military roles prior to his campaigns against Dali and the Song, so he needed the reputation!).
Overall though, a sufficient, if brief coverage of a period which can be overwhelming for newcomers.

Even if it was conquered (very densely populated as opposed to a large part of their empire) they wouldn't be able to hold it. Berke was extremely angered by what Hulagu and the ilkhanate did to baghdad despite Hulagu having full knowledge that his own cousins and leader of the golden horde was Muslim he still went through with it
Also couple that with he already mounting tensions between Berke and Hulagu because of hulagu hogging the rich lands of persia leaving Berke with nothing but a shit ton of empty steppe
It ignited a huge war between them
Also Ariq bokke's rebellion against kublai after ogedais death
Mamluks managed to use this chaos to inflict a deadly string of defeats against the ilkhanate, they took back syria, parts of iraq and fully expelled a mongol-crusader alliance from the Levant after the second battle of homs
Baibars finished off what remained of the crusader states afterwards which led to the fall of antioch

The fact the Mongol Empire influenced so much of our history, despite it only lasting for a short while is just astonishing. One of the Ilkhanate breakaway states would eventually become the Ottoman Empire, and finally subdue the Mamluks, the Rus subjects of the Golden Horde would form Muscovy, later becoming the Russian Empire, an Empire big enough to rival the size of their former Mongol overlords, the Chagatai Khanate would eventually form the Mughal Empire, lasting long enough to see the rise of the British Empire, the Vietnamese resistance of the Mongols being an eerie foreshadowing of the 1960s, and the Yuan laying the groundworks for the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and later, the People's Republic of China.

Technically the Mongols profited on some features that were used in a unique combination. The professional and newly organized army (in tumens), combined with quick horse archers with good bows and some siege equipment was very efficient at the time. So, the Mongols did very good in open field battles, but had very clearly their limits. Navally they relied on the Chinese with the attempted conquest of Japan and later on one occasion with Vietnam. These invasions had catastrophic outcomes, because they couldn't rely on their biggest advantage, the horse archer cavalaries. The jungle enviroment did not suit them either, that's because they were stopped three times in Vietnam. Clearly, in the jungle, you don't really have advantages from horseman.
Finally they were excellent against light fortifications, like forts or castles build from wood or earth. On the vast plains of the east this was very common. But they simply failed to take heavy stone fortifications in Europe. In case of the invasion of Hungary in 1241 that was a major mongol victory they never managed to take any main stone castles. This was practicurally the case in Esztergom were they were slaughtered at the walls and withdrew. So both in Poland and Hungary the monarchs started to build stone fortifications. This sealed the fate of the future Mongolian invasions.
So the Mongols seem to me very much like Alexander the Greats big empire. Their empire has been built up in just 40 years, had another 20-30 years of civil wars with little expansion and then it fell apart.

I still think those so called obscure empires would be just as well known if historians had just as much archaeological access to the areas they were in and as a result we would say that a lot of them had just as much effects on the local areas they controlled that can barely remember them mainly because they and many cultures from history have not been adequately researched

One Armenian King, Het'um I, traveled all the way to Karakorum for the Mongols, and their close alliance is really fascinating. Bayarsaikhan Dashdondog wrote an excellent book on the subject, "The Mongols and the Armenians," which is well worth a read. As well, one contemporary Armenian, Kirakos Gandzateksi, wrote an account of the journey, which you can find an english translation of here: rbedrosian.com/kg1.htm, with the specific chapters at this link: rbedrosian.com/kg12.htm

12:35 I heard a little while back that a certain 20'th century man with a rectangular moustache and an anger management problem - used this *exact* reasoning to justify his invasions' of other countries in his book (you can't seem to buy it anywhere strangely enough). He even used Genghis Kahn as his example, in fact. I'm not saying you don't have a point or anything, it just seemed pertinent to mention it.
