      I knew Boer meant farmer, but I had thought the Boers were originally a very religious group. Was I wrong about that? The narrator didn't mention religion at all.
      I also didn't realize that they kept slaves. So is that true? The Boers enslaved people?

    • @afrovarangian
      @afrovarangian 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@_Thoughtful_Aquarius_ Boers are very religious but that had nothing to do with the war.
      As for slavery, the slaves were bought from warring tribes that enslaved prisoners but you could say that's equally as bad. Remember the groot trek happened (I'm not sure about this) right after the crushing meaning many tribes were enslaved by other migrating tribes.

    • @afrovarangian
      @afrovarangian 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @John Licon There would be no South Africa as we know it though. Transvaal and Orange Free State would probably unify for defense, cultural simulaties and cape colony would be ceded to the "Boere Republiek". I have no idea what would happen afterwards with the world wars etc.

    • @afrovarangian
      @afrovarangian 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @John Licon Depending on who you ask there's already a genocide going on against white farmers. Some claim it's targeted and others say that the countries' murder rate is so high that it's difficult to tell.
      Also the small villages that do their own thing are prone to inbreeding so if they continue being isolationists they'll cripple themselves.
      But things aren't all bad. After decades of political stagnation there's change happening.

      True - Kruger adopted a two-class system of 'New Burghers' (Uitlanders) and 'Old Burghers' (Transvaalers). Uitlander enfranchisement would of course be the pretext for the British ultimatum at Bloemfontein in 1899, although Kruger, breaking from his usual stubborn demeanor, offered a package of measures that went beyond British demands, provided they surrender their claim to suzerainty (I'm sure you can guess how that was received).
      I would recommend Martin Meredith's 'Gold, Diamonds & War' which explores most of 19th-Century South African history - it's a great read!

They were the result of various Ngoni groups using Zulu tactics in campaigns of expansion, and they pushed out and destroyed many Tswana city states and i think even some Shona ones.

    Love seeing South African history! If you ever get the opportunity, do some research/reading on some other historical events here that shaped the country we have today. one important one is the Mfecane (from the Zulu perspective) in which many native tribes and peoples were forced to relocate by the Zulu which created a power/occupation vacuum into which the Boer's trekked and established the republics.
    it's also interesting to note, Afrikaans has more in similar with Flemish than Dutch, however i think that's incidental. Also we pronounce the word 'Boer' with a 'oo' sound as in 'book'.

It also depicts the Battle of Omdurman 1898 and Winston's time serving in India. Simon Ward plays Winston Churchill and looks very like him. Check out "Zulu Dawn" which depicts the Battle of Isandlawana during the Anglo-Zulu War. Great movie starring Simon Ward ,Peter O' Toole and Burt Lancaster.

    South African here, thanks for the great summation! Would be interesting to see a multi part series of the second boer war! Perhaps with a little more focus on the Zulu's, the legendary king Langalibalele of the amaHlubi and such. Its such an important and devestating conflict in our history as it paved the way for Apartheid and much of the hatred our country grapples with today.
    Also to pronounce 'Boer' try 'BOO (as in Boot) + ER (same as the end of farmER) ' in afrikaans those vowels don't really mix as a single sound as they do in English but rather as two immediate vowel sounds, rather than 'bore'. It's tricky and this isn't me attacking in anyway! Just want to help out.

    The British Empire was armed primarily with Martini-Henrys. While a reasonable weapon, one of the best military arms of the day, the Boer had an absolute advantage. Boer kommandos had a vast array of rifles including Martini-Henrys, Mauser Gewehr 71s, Chassepots, Spencer carbines, Henry (and subsequent Winchester) carbines among many other weapons. While the Martini-Henrys, Chassepots, and Gewehr 71s offered big, hard hitting rounds over distance, the real advantage and the feature which made cover fire so available for the Boers was within the repeater carbines. The rate of fire offered by the lighter shooting Henry's, Winchesters and Spencers allowed accurate, fast shots giving the rest of the Boer riflemen relative safety when taking position. Furthermore, Boers had to be accurate marksmen to survive. Whether they were hunting for food or shooting to stop an angry lion or hippo, a Boer had to be a master of his weapon, even today many young South Africans learn to shoot well.
    By comparison, the British regulars were not highly trained marksmen, they were expected to perform to order against opposing ranks of men. Holding an individual at distance was not a speciality among British troops although some were apt marksmen.
    A further understanding of the land and unconventional yet now modern tactics gave the Boer kommandos a great advantage against an army who even marching into WW1 would carry the old volley tactic.
