that i agree with, my order from boox shipped with their basic silicon case and i would argue the thing is too slippery without it, a pop socket on the back of the silicon case might just bump it up to another level
Here’s what palma does well - and exclusively: I can read my newsfeeds, in direct sunlight, one handed, with sunglasses. A habit that had disappeared with the Sunday paper, and was sorely missed.
Thank you for what is probably the most balanced review of the Palma I've seen on TH-cam. It's £300 here in the UK (plus postage, I imagine) and that's just silly money for an e-reader. Why on earth is there a camera in it? I'd like to see them bring out a more basic model for a more reasonable price.
I agree. I mean, I understand that people may use it for document scanning or for QR codes, which is how Boox justified adding it, but it feels unnecessary. If it didn't have the camera and they brought the storage down, it could be cheaper and I'd be more inclined to buy it
@@asteptowardyou I have to confess that since writing my comment I have bought the Palma, but only because I won a sum of money which was almost exactly the price of it. Was it fate? Probably not, but I decided to go for it anyway. I do really enjoy using it and it's a nice little gadget, but it hasn't changed my mind that a more basic model at a lower price would have been a better way to go.
@@GeraldineRowe lol, I get it. I *would* buy the Palma, but it's just a little too pricey for what I want to spend on an e-reader at the moment, though I think it would be a device I personally would have a lot of use for, especially because I have read e-books on my phone for a few years and am used to the size of the device. Still, I decided to try out a Kobo Clara 2e as my first e-reader, but for a while now the Palma has become more and more tempting. I honestly may still buy it, just not soon. I'm glad you were able to get it! I hope you're liking it a lot!
I love my palma. I read in several languages, and I use multiple ebook apps from different countries for books in their languages, so I find Kindle is restricting. Also, I guess this might be the same reason that Kindle failed in China, where multiple ebook sellers/publishers/apps are doing better than Amazon in China.
I agree. I gave up my Kindle Oasis for Boox Page since it’s much easier to organize all my books instead of having to create collections. I hate Amazon because of its restrictive ecosystems.
The newer kindles (pw signature) has warmth settings and no ads. The boox looks really great but I don’t need another ereader at that price. Some folks refuse to deal with Amazon so this may be a good option for them.
I read on my Kindle and my Kindle Oasis. I use a strapsicle for the Kindle and a case for the Oasis. I love reading on both. I got my Palma about an hour ago. I already adore it. I have a pop socket coming for it but I’m not sure I’ll use it. My Oasis sucks battery but it’s because I have the brightness on full and I use it a lot. Already in the last hour, I’m impressed with the Palma. Amazon better get on the stick. People could dig it.
I had a 4th Gen Kindle (no fingerprints) for about 10 years and switched to a 10th Gen White (no fingerprints) Basic a couple of years ago. I'm totally OCD about fingerprints and would _never_ buy a black Kindle. I'm totally with you regarding the buttons, also. In fact, I've just ordered another 2nd hand 4th Gen from eBay. I also find, that I'm constantly activating/changing the "progress in book" feature on the 10th Gen. It's a shame that you can't lock it/turn it off completely, never an issue with the 4th Gen! I'm too hoping that the next Gen will bring back the buttons _and_ the white option! 😉😉📚
Thank you for the “to the point” review! Can’t say how much that helps…I’ve seen other reviews of different things and some posters ramble before actually getting to the review. Definitely just sticking to my kindle as I can’t justify a $300+ item that does exactly what a kindle does with the exception of more techy options.
I like the idea of being able to use Google Play books and the Nook app on the same e-ink device alongside the Kindle app. I haven't pulled the trigger yet because of the price.
I have the kindle and was really looking in the Boox palma for the exact same reasons you were. I have small hands and wanted physical page turn buttons. But I agree that the price is just a little extreme. I think if they could simplify the device (ie get rid of the camera) and get the price point down to 100-200 range and make it slightly smaller to fit in one hand (iPhone mini size ideally) then I’d go for it. Thanks for the honest and helpful review :)
Thanks for the review, this is more on reviewing the user experience which is super helpful for me (as a reference) to decide which one to buy (Boox vs Kindle)
I was a long term kindle before until I got my Boox Page and I’ll never turn back to Kindle. Android gives me so much control over my device. I’m hoping Google / Apple will jump into e-readers in the near future.
Thank you!! Successful de-influence :) I think you might prefer the Kindle Oasis - it has better controls for the lighting (you can change to make it more warm) and it has buttons. They've stopped selling them new, but I bought one used and absolutely love it. I love that it also has a touch screen, so I can also use one of those remote page turners!
Hey thank you for that review, I'm thinking to buy it because in France in many public libraries we have ebooks to borrow (as many countries) and it's not compatible with Kindle. The good thing with the boox devices, is you can borrow it without using your laptop to read the ebook. Just a reader app compatible with DRM and that's it.
I'm not sure where you're located but in Australia Kindle does have the audible feature. No idea why but its definitely a deal-breaker for me. That's a major reason I'm leaning towards the Palma instead.
Great review, underrated channel. I've been watching the Palma for a bit, and they recently released a nice-looking portfolio case that I'm curious to try.
I love kindle because it can be used comfortably even under the sun. Sadly, it's too expensive and Indonesian books aren't available. I am not fluent in English, reading in English feels like an exam. 😂
Fantastic review with helpful information. I was considering a Palma since my Kindle Voyage is outdated, but still in great shape. I just wanted something more modern with a USB-C port and the Voyage isn’t officially supported by Amazon anymore. I also wanted something to combine the features of my reMarkable and Kindle, but this might not be it. Thanks for the thorough review and honest POV!
Thanks for the nice comment! If the size ends up being too small I also think the other BOOX tablets would be a great option since they have the full android app store available and some have a stylus! RIP Kindle Voyage.
Love your videos. Two things! I would look into the Kobo readers because they have page turn buttons. Also the high end kindles have buttons and you can probably get one second hand for a good price.
super thanks for the great review! loved that it was about the user experience. nearly replaced my kindle for the boox palma but your review helped me decide what was better for me.
Thanks! I'm glad I watched your video. I was intrigued by the size of the Boox Palma, but your analysis has shown me that there is more to consider than JUST size. Lol. Location of buttons is also important.
You should keep doing this "user experience" types of review, is full out there of tech reviewers that show you all about what the palma can do and what the kindle cant, but this to me is more useful! like nobody has talked about the accidentally tap the screen or swipe around of Palma!! nice content keep going
I would honestly ask her what size she prefers. Boox does have other devices at different sizes. I have a Palma, it's good but it feels like holding a phone, not at all like a book which I don't always love so I prefer reading on my bigger (and older) kobo.
Great Review!!! I have the palma, i've had it for a little over a week now and I love it, i've had kindles since the kindle keyboard and my latest was the oasis which is now disconntinued but i have to say since getting the palma i've been able to read more, i especially love how because it runs on android i can easily get a book from another site and upload it to kindle via email and it is almost instantly in my library where as with my kindle i would have to use a external source like a computer or phone and get the book. i also love how portable and customizable the palma is. my only problem is right now i don't have a case its on its way and i'm afraid of dropping the palma when i'm reading but when the case arrives i will put the pop socket i ordered and that should solve this.
I have the paper white and need that warm light.. that’s what I never did get the regular kindle and I love the smaller size. I got the black one today, well ordered it today, and I cannot wait for the smaller size with warm light
Great review! Thank you for the honest opinion. Personally, I would love to see a Boox Palma with sim card. I dream of having a substitute for my smartphone with limiting options to consuming media. If the Boox Palma made calls, had messaging, and -- as a premium -- offered NFC, I would ditch the iPhone. Now, regarding the battery: you said you use the calendar + clock as the screen lock. It means the screen refreshes every minute to show the correct time. That's probably eating the battery.
You can change the screen refresh for the lock screen to not refresh every minute. But then you have a clock that’s incorrect for five or 10 minutes at a time. Lol
With an app like rotation control your can rotate the screen and you would have the buttons on the left side but closer to your hand! The only thing is that you couldn't use the flip cover.
Hey, just wanted to say great job on this video. I’ve been curious about the Palma for a while now, and I love the comparison. The price is the only reason I haven’t bought one yet. The form factor is tempting, but then, didn’t Hisense also release something like this? (Theirs might be a full-fledged E-ink phone.) Also, I agree with you on the buttons: I have my kindle, and love it because I can add my own fonts. But I also have a BN Nook that I prefer for one reason: BUTTONS! Anyway, keep up the great work!
@@graysontate_ - Depends on what you’re looking for. I find it quite nice. It’s not as functional as the Kindle in some ways (can’t upload your own fonts, limited integrations, limited cross-platform features), but it does have nice add-ons like making your own shelves. All in all, considering the e-reader alone, I have a *slight* preference toward the Nook. But once I take the rest of the ecosystem into account, including the more generous return policy, the Libby integration, and access to more indie titles, Kindle/Amazon comes out in top.
Nice video. I'm very happy with my basic Kindle but the palma does look really nice in white. But I agree, the beauty of Kindle is it's simplicity. And enjoy having the Kindle store built in. ❤
I take Boox any day. Boox’s size and more options. I can read Kindle books, Nook books and Kobo books on my Palma. Also I can listen to music without Bluetooth. Also it has a sdcard slot to hold more content.
I am thinking about getting the Palma. Did you notice on the white the black line at the top and the ring if bright color on the dark? I Have seen the complaint of that in a few videos
Hi! Any insight on how immersive reading works on the Palma? I have ADHD and use this feature to read and listen at then same time on my iPhone. Helps me stay focused on the content but my eyes have been dying for eInk. The Palma might be my answer but haven’t found a definitive answer that it’s powerful enough to listen to audible and highlight the text. (Immersive reading). Thanks for letting me know.
This is a super interesting point! I know you can listen to an audible book and read it at the same time which would be perfect with the palma. arc.net/l/quote/iixunudz
Hello everyone? I'm looking for any of these but need one just for note-taking, like appointments, self-reminders, etc. That's the only one I need to use. No reading or writing in it. In that aspect, which model do you all recommend? Thanks, everyone!
I thought this was the case but even when I changed the screen saver to a static image it still drained faster than I anticipated. I am sure you can dig around in the settings and disable anything that would keep the device working on standby, but it was not a super straight forward process.
I think a big one also is the bigger storage/expandable storage is a big plus for the palma when it comes to reading manga as those files tend to be bigger in size so you can fit a lot more on there without having to download and delete constantly
Sis, you need to try the Boox Page. It is $30 less than the Palma and has page turn buttons with a chin so you don't have to worry about accidentally touching the screen. I know you like it white and 6" but it's only available in black with a 7" screen. The Palma has Boox Super Refresh (BSR) which reduces ghosting but dramatically drains the battery and can't be disabled. The Page doesn't have BSR so you'll get more time between charges. If $250 is too pricey the Boox Leaf2 which is a slower version of the Page for $200.
i've had the palma since christmas, coming from the kindle oasis i much prefer it, the portability and the fact it runs on full android with a wide range of file formats it works with easily makes it worth the price tag, also the expandable storage for audiobooks is just unbeatable, i would argue £300 is a fair price for whats being sold but honestly with a product like that its a case of the people who wants it already know its worth it to them, most readers will be happy with a kindle like you said, i couldnt go back to a kindle personally, the palma sits in my pocket next to my phone, and i have the volume and function button setup as manual page turns so no matter how i hold it or where im reading its comfortable its made reading more accessible and casual for me than scolling social media, and for that i'd pay £300 for anyone wondering my function button is a single press for page forward, double press for page back and hold for screen refresh then i have the e-ink center, app view and home se to swiping up from the bottom, works great!
Great video, I’m interested in the Palma but not sure of how well PDF’s are to read on there. Not a ton of images or anything in the files just not sure if they’re really readable.
@@graysontate_ thanks so much for replying, I'm leaning towards scrapping the idea of an e-reader since for the most part I want one for an upcoming trip where I'm going to be stuck in a hotel for a couple days, after that who knows when I'll be able to read. 😄 (Though part of me is STILL thinking about the Boox Color 7)
boox can give you app of book stores that are not for english speakers. kindle is stuck with eng and or pdf pirated books but most of those are english only. so boox for world wide
Thank you SO much for this review, Grayson! Based on what you said, I've decided to not get the Boox. It's way too much for the price point. Again, thank you. You saved me money!
If you don’t mind getting your books for Amazon or the library I would say the Kindle Paperwhite. If you really want comics or other marketplaces then the Palma for sure.
Buy once, cry once. The Palma, although priced higher than most, is an amazing device and very versatile and very unique with his form, factor and size. I have a paperweight signature edition as well. I’ve use them both. I always reach for the Palma- especially in bed.
You are missing the whole point about software, that's why it's similar to you. Which means you only use very "LIMITED APP to READ" and you have limited knowledge/not tech savvy towards OS. There are lots of people who have different book sources other than Amazon and other formats, which is not good to read on Kindle app, or they do not want to convert to mobi format for Kindle to handle; or to be only accessible in kindle app. You definitely do not have the experience handling textbook over 200Mb and tried to send it to Kindle, it's a huge pain. there are size limits of the book that you can sent wirelessly to Kindle account. (You can easily do so by going to your google drive to read on an open e-reader, even it's not Boox or Palma. You definitely do not have multiple library app from different countries that you need to read on other apps but not on Kindle. Sorry, this is just an inadequate review for these reasons.
I'm tempting to buy the palma to read my textbooks, mostly pdfs. I have an ipad but it's too massive to bring anywhere. Would you recommend the palma for textbooks then? thanks in advance!
I bought one, simply to have an even smaller kindle reader, that i can carry everywhere I want (would have gone for a paperewhite if not, and that thing is 6,8" plus bezels) since im not a huge reader, but can do so every now and then. Then also it is a device running Spotify (offline mode), which is a nice to have. Sure it will be handy to have a reader that is able to show alot of formats, not just kindle ones. Im also reading alot of newsarticles that can be downloaded as epub, which kindle does not like. I may use it as a alarm clock aswell, and keeping tickets for the tram/train on this thing might also be handy if your mobile phone battery runs dry on a long trip, though im not sure the palma is good at all of what im asking for, im eager to try it out. The kindle is just a bit too simple for my likings, but surely the palma is not for everyone. I personally will have to try it out though.
Thank you for such a good review. This is the best video I have watch on the Palma and I’ve watched dozens! I was on the fence but you def helped me out, I’ll save my money and keep my paperwhite!
For me the Palma is mainly interesting because I read a looooooot of fanfiction, which is why my screentime on my phone is astronomical and my eyes are kind of dying lol. I think if you want to combine reading on archive of our own and apps like the kindle app or libby than the Palma is kind of the perfect device. I was also kind of worried that if I got and E-Reader that feels a lot different from my phone I would just not use it and read on my phone instead, because I am kind of a creature of habit. I mainly want the Palma to save my eyes and because I hope (that it'll it feel so familiar to my phone) that I will actually use it. I ordered mine today and I am excited to get it and try it out.
A million years ago, I was first introduced to eReaders in apps on my IPod Touch. Those apps were amazing. One you could just lean the device back a little to change the page And one the page was a continuous scroll up by tilting back. My first kindle was 2nd generation I think. The keyboards d the 3G connectivity were great. But the turn buttons on each side was my favorite part. The screen was shattered and I was heartbroken. I purchased a paper white 3…I miss my buttons🙃 Why doesn’t kindle have Bluetooth?
if i read foreign language stories wattpad on google browser by using google translate, is palma for me? im newbies in portable ereader. currently i read through ipad and hp.
Since this has full android you can use the same process on the palma. If you think the size is right for you I am sure it will be a huge upgrade over reading on an ipad!
Might be more comfortable to hold Palma with a pop socket:-)

Hey, just wanted to say great job on this video. I’ve been curious about the Palma for a while now, and I love the comparison. The price is the only reason I haven’t bought one yet. The form factor is tempting, but then, didn’t Hisense also release something like this? (Theirs might be a full-fledged E-ink phone.)
Also, I agree with you on the buttons: I have my kindle, and love it because I can add my own fonts. But I also have a BN Nook that I prefer for one reason: BUTTONS!
Anyway, keep up the great work!
I’ve eyed the nook a few times for the buttons but I’ve heard the user experience can be really cumbersome.
I love this video! You've got a great personality and present super great! Subscribed :)
Have seen the complaint of that in a few videos
I haven’t noticed a dark line at the top.
It might be overkill but have you seen the Remarkable e-paper tablet?
I wonder if that screensaver refreshing the clock is what impacted the battery so much.
I thought this was the case but even when I changed the screen saver to a static image it still drained faster than I anticipated. I am sure you can dig around in the settings and disable anything that would keep the device working on standby, but it was not a super straight forward process.
I think a big one also is the bigger storage/expandable storage is a big plus for the palma when it comes to reading manga as those files tend to be bigger in size so you can fit a lot more on there without having to download and delete constantly
love your review. thank you
OR, just buy a Kobo.
Oooo I will need to investigate! This is my first introduction to BOOX.
If it was just a little cheaper... $300 is tough to justify. That said, I would love to put Anki on it.
Hopefully the good reviews and popularity will bring the price down on the next version!
i've had the palma since christmas, coming from the kindle oasis i much prefer it, the portability and the fact it runs on full android with a wide range of file formats it works with easily makes it worth the price tag, also the expandable storage for audiobooks is just unbeatable, i would argue £300 is a fair price for whats being sold but honestly with a product like that its a case of the people who wants it already know its worth it to them, most readers will be happy with a kindle like you said, i couldnt go back to a kindle personally, the palma sits in my pocket next to my phone, and i have the volume and function button setup as manual page turns so no matter how i hold it or where im reading its comfortable
its made reading more accessible and casual for me than scolling social media, and for that i'd pay £300
for anyone wondering my function button is a single press for page forward, double press for page back and hold for screen refresh then i have the e-ink center, app view and home se to swiping up from the bottom, works great!
Very informative comment! I agree with your point on flexibility. This is a device that can grow with a users needs much easier than a kindle.
Great review. Did you try using Readwise Reader on it?
I did not. The screen size is pretty standard so I would assume if their android app is good it will work perfectly on the Palma.
Great video, I’m interested in the Palma but not sure of how well PDF’s are to read on there. Not a ton of images or anything in the files just not sure if they’re really readable.
They would be but I think you’ll be doing a lot of zooming in and out since the screen is so small.
Boox Palma needs a side scroll wheel for the one hand reading
boox can give you app of book stores that are not for english speakers. kindle is stuck with eng and or pdf pirated books but most of those are english only. so boox for world wide
Great point! For alternative marketplaces the palma or other android readers is an easy buy.
Are there some software updates planned?
Android 11 is no longer receiving security updates as of 3/2024…
This is a great point. I doubt Boox would spend time to update the device so that is an important thing to consider.
I have both. Palma and Oasis. Hardly use my oasis now.
Thank you SO much for this review, Grayson! Based on what you said, I've decided to not get the Boox. It's way too much for the price point. Again, thank you. You saved me money!
I am always a fan of buying gadgets but I am happy this helped!
I ended up getting it anyway LOL@@graysontate_
i want an ereader but ive never had one , so could you say what would be best to get ?
Kindle Paperwhite or kindle basic
If you don’t mind getting your books for Amazon or the library I would say the Kindle Paperwhite. If you really want comics or other marketplaces then the Palma for sure.
Buy once, cry once. The Palma, although priced higher than most, is an amazing device and very versatile and very unique with his form, factor and size. I have a paperweight signature edition as well. I’ve use them both. I always reach for the Palma- especially in bed.
What about the battery? Is it last for at least 10 days of a normal use?
I would say yes it should last 10 days or longer...with wifi and bluetooth off.
one important question; are you related to Plane Jane ?
omfg now THIS is a comment. Unfortunately not…yet
This was such a great review thank youuuu.
What about page turns? Is it as fast as rhe kindle? Just wish you can out the kindle and this palma side by side so i can see the size difference
The page turns are even faster since you can change the display mode at the cost of a little bit of battery life.
Would you recommend the palma for textbooks then? thanks in advance!
very good advice really appreciated
Oh this guy is crazy fit❤
Can you read Everand/Scribd on Palma?
From other reviews that I have watched… you are able to read Everand on the Palma.
I second this.
My Kindle only had the option of making the screen yellow. No white or blue.
Thank you for such a good review. This is the best video I have watch on the Palma and I’ve watched dozens! I was on the fence but you def helped me out, I’ll save my money and keep my paperwhite!
I haven't regretted going back to my paperwhite.
i know you don't do productivity on your reader but could you demonstrate email for this of us that are looking for that, please.
Want to know that if the boox palma support kindle wordwise feature?
If anything this will feel much much better on your eyes.
Smallest Kindle can not get rid of the yellow screen.
Overpriced and underwhelming! Next!
I purchased a paper white 3…I miss my buttons🙃
Why doesn’t kindle have Bluetooth?
Newer kindles do have Bluetooth, makes it easy to listen to audible content. I really miss the unlimited 3G connection!
if i read foreign language stories wattpad on google browser by using google translate, is palma for me? im newbies in portable ereader. currently i read through ipad and hp.
Since this has full android you can use the same process on the palma. If you think the size is right for you I am sure it will be a huge upgrade over reading on an ipad!
How’s the speaker? I want a dedicated podcast player for bedtime listening without worry of overstimulation
It would be fine, albeit tinny, for that. I wouldn't listen to music on that speaker.
Boox is to expensive I’ll have to stick with kobo and kindles
No comparison kindle all day long, kindle scribe to be exact
girls and gays...as a white cis-gendered male i am offended for you not including me
"All of my tech girls and gays"? Thanks for being so inclusive...
Of course diva 🥰
Once you Kindle, no mingle
