    Thanks for the comparison. I found that the Jinhao 85 with its screw-on cap is more effective at preventing the nib drying out. On the other hand, the Jinhao 51a makes it easy to access the nib and feed. So if we ignore cosmetics, each pen has its strengths. In any case, they are all extremely affordable EDC pens.

    Great comparison. I enjoy all my 51As. As you showed the metal section on 85, you could mention that most of the acrylic barrel 51As, all the Bobby nib versions also have a metal section similar to 85. The original 51 cap is more similar to 51A in as they do not have a simulated cap band and the same type of edge as 51As. Stay safe & healthy.

    You are correct. All these pens are good quality , inexpensive items that represent very good value for money. I have one of the small grey pens with a fude nibs that I have never had a problem with.

    Thanks, James! I'm seeing some good buys on the 85, virtually no price difference, even lower in some cases. But,
    really no such thing as a bad deal when you're under $10 for a nice fountain pen.

    It will be very interesting to see if Jinhao release an open/traditional nib variant of the 85. From memory I think the chronology of the 51A was hooded first and followed by open nib. What's particularly surprising about the open nibbed 51A is that it seems just as stable as the hooded one. Still doesn't dry out and is smooth as butter. I respect that they didn't just come out with a generic copy of the P51 but varied it, both with the ball clip and the barrel materials, then the nib change. If the 85 proves to be another long-lived pen then maybe that too will see diversity over the coming months and years. Interesting times!

    I would love if you could make a video comparing fountain pens with flexible nibs and giving tips of your favorite ones, best cost benefits, etc. I mean, if you like using flexible nibs at all, of course, haha! 😉 I really like the channel and its content, and thanks for yet another great video. 😊

    I've bought a 85 after watching your video and i love how it writes. It's currently my favorite(compared to my low ends Pilots and other Jinhaos and Wingsung that I have)
    But the only thing i don't really like is the screw on cap, so now i am going to get the 51.
    Your videos are unofficially my decision making factor when buying a pen(even though it's just a $3 pen)
    I also want to try a "Bobby nib" but it says that the seller/product is currently unavailable on Etsy😔

    Thanks so much for making the direct comparison. You did a great job pointing out each element of the fit and finish. As much as I love my wood 51a, it does look a bit plain next to the fancier 85. I'm starting to approach my personal fountain pen saturation point, but it's nice to get a look at these slightly fancier, but still budget-priced, pens.

  • @paulherman5822
    @paulherman5822 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Which is better? Yes. All depends on what you want or like. I regularly use a 51A, and I currently have an 85 I'm carrying. My criteria is "what's the next one in rotation, and do I want to use that width nib?" Cheap plastic 51A, acrylic 51A (no wood version, yet) or lacquered brass 85. As long as it does what I need it to do, I'm happy.

  • @Kamdorian

    Great video, I love Jinhaos, I have the 51A in wood finish and a smoked black demonstrator. The demonstrator leaks at the plastic ring near the feed, I may have capped it too hard but given is so inexpensive I have no problem buying another one. I have diamine ancient copper ink in my wood 51a and after a month or so the ink seems to dry out and become very crusty LOL, again no big deal can clean it and refill. I may have missed it in your video but are the nibs identical between the 51a and 85?

    When it comes to replacing the nib on the 51a, there's the option of pulling it out from the front by using scissors (there's a video by Bobby on TH-cam how to do it). I haven't been able to disassemble the nib unit otherwise and I'm curious as to how you did it!

    • @JG3Reviews

    • @paulherman5822
      @paulherman5822 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've done it. Pair of nail clippers. Or pair of pliers. Grip the nib (if you want to save the original nib, be gentle), and they pull straight out. Then, just push in the new one, making sure that it's aligned correctly. (Did it to an 85 just recently, as I wanted a Bobby nib. 😉) They're all the same.

  • @stevehuffman7453

    I have two 51A's; and Ebony with an Extra Fine #5 nib, and a Mahogany with a Fine number 5 nib. (I still "need" to get the rosewood, peach wood, and tiger wood - with #5 nibs.)
    Is the 85 available with a standard number 5 nib, or are they a hooded nib only? If the latter, does the hood come off so you can remove for the nib and feed for cleaning?
    I'm leery of hooded nibs. I've never had one. I understand they supposedly help prevent dry-out if you have a long pause in your writing. However, to date only one of my 25 Jinhao pens has dried out after 10 minutes or so uncapped and not writing. A couple swipes on a scrap of leather has it going again.
    If I get a hooded nib pen, it will be one of the less expensive plastic/acrylic 51A's so I won't be out as much if I don't like a hooded nib.

    • @JG3Reviews
      @JG3Reviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So far, I've only seen the 85 hooded, and the hood is glued.
      I'd definitely start with the 51a and see if you like it. Like you said, it's a minimal cost, and if you like it they can be great pens.

    I don't like either of these Jinhao pens, the arrow clip is too much of a knock off on the 85, and the 51a caps too deep and not flush to the body leaving a metal sharp edge.
    My favourite Jinhao is the X750.
    Not a knock off of anything.
    I have several.

    Quick? 10 minutes? Quick is 2 minutes. I hope you appreciate that through purchasing this stuff you are encouraging the theft of copyrighted pens. I guess most of you pen collectors could care less. Can you imagine what they are paying the workers in these factories to crank this stuff out?
