    The god of war devs actually didn’t ignore how elves in Alfheim look. The picture you showed was a dark elf from the game, but their portrayal of light elves were quite beautiful/luminescent.

    The idea of dwarves being a type of elves sounds like something the Elder Scrolls took and ran with.

    • @kingbeauregard
      @kingbeauregard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I think we have Tolkien to blame (plus Gary Gygax and D&D) for having very strong opinions on what dwarves and elves are. Like, over on Jackson Crawford's awesome channel about all things Norse, he points out that you won't find any evidence in the old sagas that dwarves were actually short. And elves ... ? There is no consistent tradition that elves were bright and beautiful and friendly. The English word "oaf" basically means "elf"; the concept was that, if you had a child with mental / physical disabilities, it wasn't really a human child but an elf (rather, an "oaf") who got swapped for your beautiful human child who is living among the elves. And in German, the word for nightmare is "Albtraum", i.e. an "elf-dream". tl/dr elves were jerks.

    • @Ulvejenta
      @Ulvejenta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      In Norse mythology, the "light" elves were incredible beautiful and if you had a child with one, your child would be quite beautiful. There is a family tree said to be descendants of elves, but elves aren't instantly good or bad. They are both and everything, you never know where you have them.
      They were also described to be your erotic thoughts so how one looks like is all up to each and everyone.
      As for dwarfs, some do call them black elves, or svart alv, as it is in Norwegian. I think it is just something people started to use due to svartalfheim being their home

    • @aztecklover69
      @aztecklover69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Most elfs are deadly allergic to iron but the elfs from svartelheim are not; hence in some stories they are known as the iron elves^^

    • @ethanquirk28
      @ethanquirk28 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@kingbeauregard pretty sure Tolkien’s elves are rather drawn from the Brittonic-Celt interpretation, which bares a much closer resemblance. I can’t remember the exact word but their name is related to Fae and they were basically described as tall, pale magical beings with a love of nature.
      As much as he drew influence from Norse mythology, he also had a deep love for British mythology and was even quoted as saying that his works which were compiled to make many of the stories in the Silmarillion were written as love letters to such and that he was trying to rebuild the British legendarium

    When you said the God of War developers completely ignored the description of elves in the real myths, that's not entirely true. You showed a picture of a dark elf, which is the type of elf you will come across the most because it's an enemy type. They're probably based off of the description of dwarves as black elves, like you mentioned in the Svartalfheim section of this video. But in the story, we're also shown plenty of light elves in Alfheim, who seem much closer to the real ones with a white glowing appearance, and seeming much more peaceful and graceful than the dark elves.
    I realise I probably sound like a fanboy who can't handle someone saying anything bad about the game, but I just couldn't help explaining things a little. Hopefully I'm not annoying :)

    The reason Frey was the king of Alfheim was that the elves where originally associated with the Vanir, perhaps minor Vanir gods. In one poem the terms where used interchangeably and they where both associated with fertility and nature with elves even being worshiped as minor fertility deities.

    • @gabbyn978
      @gabbyn978 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Also, there had been a war between the Vanir, who were supposed to have ruled the world before that time, and the Aesir which won it in the end. The ensuing truce was safeguarded by exchanging hostages, which lived among the opposite group and were treated quite well.

  • @8265
    @8265 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    To clarify for those unfamiliar with Norse Mythology - The Vanir are a second set of Gods associated with the Earth, whereas the Aesir are associated the heavens...Also Helheim is in some Myths, part of Niflheim

    That last point really struck a cord with me. It’s a very valid point, why is it that Vikings were so eager to die in war and be taken to Valhalla just to prepare for a battle that they were already fully aware they had no hope of winning? But then I thought about what you said about Christian invaders destroying several old Norse texts and it occurred to me, maybe there were 2 possible outcomes to the myths about the ultimate battle. Maybe there was one outcome where there weren’t enough warriors in Valhalla or they just weren’t strong enough which is the ending we’re all familiar and another outcome where the Gods saved the nine worlds from complete destruction and tre Gods and mankind from extermination, but this outcome was destroyed by the Christians in a bonfire before Snorri Sturluson could copy it!
    That would add a little more motivation to the Vikings to become stronger and charge into battle not just expecting to die in battle but counting on it!

    • @greymane2090
      @greymane2090 ปีที่แล้ว

      what may really bake your noodle is the knowledge that Ragnarok have some evidence of being a later interpretation. I do not have the sources to hand, but as I recall, the Anglo-Saxons, such an into the world was not spoken of. We must also remember that the Scandinavian's had a few more centuries to develop the mythology before converting. for example, with the Anglo-Saxons Loki was not a part of their stories. this is more of a stretch and idea I have heard of, but the harsh winters that come before Ragnarok were believed to have happened a bit before the Viking age. which could give some further indication of the growth in the ideas of dying in battle, as opposed to living an ordered and lawful life beforehand. However, this last bit as I say, is speculation.

    Hey dude I have a suggestion for your channel. There is a comic book channel called Comicstorian and he makes videos about comic book stories and then he puts all his little videos into one big one to basically tell the whole entire arch. I think you could switch from talking about characters to talking about events in mythology and then reupload them to talk about the entire saga in one 2 hour video or whatever the case may be. Love your videos and a lot of time ill listen to the stories as I go to bed so you would get a lot of watch time at least from me if I played just a whole 2 hour video trying to go to bed.

    Regarding the "Black elves" concept in Svartalfheimr, it's also hypothesized that the dwarves and dark elves were either completely the same people or two branches of the same people. There's also a line or two in the Prose Edda (I think), that describes the dwarves/dark elves as not liking the elves, giving rise to that trope in modern media.
    Also, I really commend you for pointing out Snorri's possible Christianizing of a lot of the old beliefs and mythos. He 'wrote' the prose edda (more like gathered stories from other sources into one book) long after old traditions had become unpopular/illegal to practice, and should probably be seen as more of a historian interested in what he deemed to be the olden days, lol.
