How to Replace a Honda VTEC Solenoid Gasket

  • Here's how to replace a leaking or clogged VTEC solenoid and gasket on the 2.4L 4 cylinder K24 engine.
Leaking a leaking VTEC gasket or clogged/malfunctioning VTEC actuator are a common problem on older Honda's. The VTEC solenoid mounts to the engine head, and allows the flow of oil into small passages that change the camshaft profiles, causing the engine to perform faster.
This is not to be confused with the VTC solenoid, which advances or retards the variable valve timing gear to change engine timing. A video on VTC solenoid replacement can be found here:
    • P1009 Honda VTC Valve ...
If your Honda is leaking oil down the passenger side of the engine, the most probable cause is a leaking VTEC solenoid. Oil will drip from the top, down over the oil filter and the side of the drain pan, and in some cases onto the subframe. Significant oil loss can be observed, along with a P1259 VTEC malfunction code.
This tutorial demonstrates how to replace the VTEC solenoid and gasket. The gasket itself has a strainer that can sometimes get clogged. This procedure will be applicable to the Acura TSX, Honda Accord, Honda CR-V and Element.
Three 10mm bolts secure the VTEC solenoid to the back of the engine, toward the firewall. It can be accessed from both the top or bottom of the engine. Have a catch pan ready to drain access oil once the bolts are removed. The oil pressure switch is also part of the solenoid assembly.
Clean the mating surfaces thoroughly, before reinstalling the gasket dry. Torque the three 10mm bolts to 104 in-lb. Top off the engine oil and start the vehicle. Once the engine is warm, check for leaks.

Was going to wait reinstalling my subframe but it appears you can work on it with it installed and the strut bar removed.
For 2 months I've been gathering parts for my clutch job. Ended up rebuilding my transmission for the first time, replaced everything in the drivetrain with new parts, all new lcas and engine mounts. Was about to put the subframe on yesterday and saw I had leaks from the vtec solenoid area and want to replace the oil cooler hose and oil cooler o-ring as well.

@@Buzzed_Highlights UPDATE: Got the part I needed, come to find out the people at AutoZone were confusing the vtec solenoid for the vtc Solenoid. So I went back watched some videos on how to replace the vtc Solenoid. This video goes step by step on how to replace it Link: th-cam.com/video/YYKikGysXqE/w-d-xo.html it was a bitch to take out the 12mm bolt you can't see by the pulley (you'll know what I'm talking about if you do it) also when you put the new solenoid in there's a bolt that holds it in place. Once again a total bitch to put in because you can't see where it's going and there's a specific piece on the solenoid the bolt has to go through before you could thread it in. Other than that pretty easy. Drove about 70 miles CEL hasn't returned. Hit VTEC twice and all good so far. Also thanks for reminding me, I was going to post it earlier today but totally slipped my mind.

Nice job, it can all be done from the top I use a very long screwdriver to close the two prong clips that hold the wiring harness on the shield. On the front one right wheel side remove the valve to make it easier to get at the clip. About the only other thing I will add is cut two long studs to align the valve install the valve over the two studs install one bolt remove one stud at a time and add that bolt. You will need a mirror and good lighting... The studs are 6MM X 60MM X 1.0 are 60M (2.5") Cut 60M anything under 55M is going to be a tad short.

    • @afara2000
      @afara2000 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@SingingSabre Same here. I think it's absolutely necessary to do this job from underneath because those 3 bolts need really snug socket grip to be opened. I almost rounded up the bottom 10mm bolt. I think he should add a note in the comment section to recommend drain engine oil, take out oil filter to provide easy access to those bolts. Another tip: Instead of breaking white wire clips attaching iVTEC to its bracket, there is another 10mm bolt that can easily be opened using a vise grip holding bracket and a 10mm wrench. That will give a better chance to use a flat head screw drive to remove electrical connectors which tend to break if you apply too much force disconnecting.

I swear, I worked 15 min on the car, and then it suddenly started raining torrentially for 5 min and stopped.
Worked 10 min on the car and then it started again... I give up, it stops but I'm not going back.
Well, to my obvious anger, it's not raining anymore, but I know it's just baiting me!
    Imma start next day, welp.

Hi if the vtec solonoid leaks, does it mean the vtec will not engage?

Poor application of a resilient seal by Honda! This should be a compression gasket. This kind is only useful for a water pump maybe. But I digress. We’re all talking about 12+ year old cars with way over 150K miles. Thanks for this very informative video.
