Installing an oil catch can on the diesel Jeep Liberty CRD

  • In this video we'll install a ProVent 200 air/oil separator into the Jeep Liberty CRD. Also referred to as a catch can, this device will filter out oil from the blow-by gases so they don't go back into the intake and crud up the valves. We'll also have to fabricate an adapter plate to hold the mounting clamp for the ProVent. I'm psyched to finally put this into the 2005 Liberty KJ CRD. Enjoy!

NOTE: The instructions above will only work with left hand drive KJ's, because on RHD models the brake servo is right where he has mounted his catch can, so there is no space for it there.

On a RHD you can fit it just behind the battery, the hoses need to be a bit longer though 😃
Update: As the hoses are longer, I’ve noticed that the breather hose doesn’t push the oil correctly into the catch can - it’s basically sitting in the 19mm hose. On my 2.8 crd, it’s the earlier 2004 derivative - without the MAF sensor - so the original breather hose connects into a branch of the air box after the air filter. I’m beginning to think that there’s not enough draw to pull the gases through due to the length of the hoses,
and the restriction valve on the outlet of the catch can, so maybe, I need to try and locate it on the left of the engine to reduce the hose lengths?

Mine is still in the post so while I am waiting for it to arrive I plan to try fitting it next to the power steering fluid reservoir, in the small gap in front of the coolant expansion tank. If there isn't enough room there then I will try to relocate the PSFR into the gap between the brake servo and the left of the expansion tank, to make more room, but I will have to extend one or both of the hoses going to the PSFR to do that, so it gets more difficult to do.

Is this to get around changing the pcv/ccv??.

No Harry...This stops crud and oily gases from your crankcase breather getting back into your engine oil, which helps to keep your oil in top condition for longer. You basically cut the breather pipe in half (the one on top of the rocker cover), extend the two ends you have made and join them back together with Provent 200, inline with it, so the gases and crud are filtered out and it outlets cleaned gases back to the inlet...Or something like that...I may not be 100% on the exact details. But I know that combined with an EGR blanking plate or an EGR delete, it helps to keep your engine oil in top condition for a lot longer than stock, which in turn keeps everything relying on good quality clean oil, like your turbo and other rotating parts in the engine, in top condition for a lot longer too, which can end up saving you a lot of money.

Where did you find your elbows from the catch can to the 3/4" hose? Having trouble finding those at my auto parts stores. Thanks

They were actually just random plumbing parts from Home Depot. Same as you, I couldn't find that stuff at my local parts store. I actually brought the catch can and the hoses that I was planning on using into HD and fitted it up to save a few trips back and forth.

@@luxurycardetailingthehamptons Thanks.......I live in a rural area and limited on stuff here. Will check out Home Depot next time I'm near one. Have everything to do the job including the quick drain on the oil pan! Thanks for your video. Love the Liberty CRD's. Mine is an 06 model.

Hey! Did you ever have issues with the clear tube and heat from the turbo?
