I put an 88°C thermostat in mine, currently averaging 24 US MPG.

what were you averaging before?

@BoellerFamilyFun around 22, I did the thermostat, cleaned the MAP and replaced the air filter at the same time.

why do that? what are the sympoms? what does the viscous heater do?

my understanding is that the viscus heater helps to get the engine up to temp faster. I am in south Texas and I am not concerned about worming up. WWdiesel makes them and can explain it better. I now have less drag on my belt making the engine just a little more efficient.
