    Believe it or not the Engine Restore you can get in the parts store actually helps to restore compression in the cylinders, which reduces or stops the blow by. The usage interval states 1 can every oil change, but you can probably get away with every other. That way you not only don't have blow by but actually have more power. The only mechanical fix to that problem is to pull the pistons and change all of the rings. The first 20 miles of driving with new rings helps them seat and you want to wide open throttle it and let off, a lot. That helps seat the rings to the cylinder walls. After that you should be good for another 200K. Also, I have hooked up the PCV's to just breather hose and watched as a bunch of black oil vapor pushed out past the filters. You don't need an old engine at all to benefit from this. The engine in question had been built less than 2 oil changes ago at the time. I still have the black smog marks on the under side of my hood. At idle I could see the stuff coming out from the sides of the hood. It's needless to say I ditched that and went back to OEM.

    Nice job. I had one on my old GTI and it was nasty the gunk I would find in the catch can. I never thought of adding one to the XJ. Thanks for the video.

    The oil catch can goes on the vacuum side. Otherwise it doesn't do anything but give the fresh air something else to go through.

    @Blitz4000 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That adaptor you are talking about is not an adaptor at all, but rather its a check valve. You have to install it since the PCV valve will become isolated at the upstream part of the catch can and the downstream will go into free flow in both ways which would be bad for your engine.

      Can you please give a little more detail on where the piece should be installed or a link to an explanation? I have been having a very hard time finding instructions for this catch can .

    if you watched the video placement is clear. In the stream from valve cover to intake...splice...move line or remove completely and put flexible line on and put where convenient

    the issue I had with this can is I had to drill larger holes in the inlet blocks to allow more crankcase flow.

    Usually those go on the vacuum side, but if it is just blowby insurance, that's a good place. I'm not sure if they have any media in it, but I've heard of guys using steel wool as something to get the vapors to condense on. Of course, an inline filter is also recommended the to make sure stuff doesn't get sucked into the engine if you use a material like that.
    I had an old 258 that had such bad blowby I had to use an open PVC system. When I tried to run it closed, the blowby would literally choke off the engine.

    I have curious about these. Have you noticed an accumulation of "substance" caught in the can since your installation, May 2014? As I write this, it is Sept. 2014. Any other observations noticed? Tks.

    Everything was AOK... But this is a " Crankcase " Breather.... The " Lines " must be big enough for it to accommodate the " Air Flow ".

    Nice Honda mod. Where-as I normally applaud what you do, you might as well have installed a pop can inline. That can is not baffled and will do you absolutely no good, the phrase "you get what you pay for" comes to play here. While this is a good modification to pretty much any vehicle on the road, in order for it to be effective, you need to run a baffled system so that it actually catches the oil vapor and condenses it back to liquid state..

      ScurvyPerformance I was just about to say the same thing... This can is absolute garbage... I have had it on my car for two seasons, and it hasn't captured any oil..... The first season I though it was because the bottom drain plug was loose or leaking... The second season, it just turns out it's junk.... I destroyed it to see inside of it, it's just a hole going in and our less than a half inch away from eachother into and empty can... JUNK!
      I wish I had taken pictures of the inside

    • @stanleysgill
      @stanleysgill 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim Fox not a good idea at all.... Where do you suppose the steel wool that gets pushed through goes!

  • @philwalton3275
    @philwalton3275 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    these basic 20 cans are not going to catch the 20 oz like the other half full unit which most likely has a filtre media to drop out hydrocarbons. they are better than basic tube height difference which still draws plenty hydrocarbon to intake

    I have a 99 honda odyssey. its has a 3.5L v6 motor. there are two lines running to the intake. one from the cover on the back of the motor and the other from the front. how do I install a catch can on this motor?

  • @antandshell
    @antandshell 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    For that price did the can have a built in separator or mesh filter. without that the catch can will not catch nearly as much as one with that type of filter built in. Most of the china made catch cans on ebay do not have this built in.

    How did this hold up over time? .. (( I see the 7/10/15 update, so it seemed to hold up for at least a full year, and you sold the zombie Jeep awhile back, right?)) I'm just curious if you saw any real benefit from this modification while you drove it. I'm going through my '88 and have had this on the list for awhile and am wondering if it was worthwhile. Thanks!

    I have oil coming out of my dipstick tube and 710 cap. Not alot, but a little isn't good. Would this trick you did fix this?

    • @rustynuggets
      @rustynuggets 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it blowing any blueish smoke from the exhaust? Do a compression test. Rings could be done. Or it has too much oil in it.

    • @realmortician
      @realmortician 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No smoke. It even passed smog with great numbers. Only seems to do after running at freeway speeds for more then 20 minutes. Just running around town it doesn't do it. Power is still good. Engine runs good. No weird noises or anything. I've changed the oil multiple times (10?) and have never had this happen, so I don't THINK it's overfull.

    • @rustynuggets
      @rustynuggets 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its odd that oil would come out of the filler cap, either its cracked and leaks or is not screwed on tight. oil coming out of the dip stick is a worry as it usually points to the crank case pressurizing which is usually blow by. if its a turbo engine then a check valve could be busted and venting boost pressure into the crank case or cam covers... depends on engine.

    • @realmortician
      @realmortician 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I never mentioned that. It's a jeep 4.0L HO six. 100K miles. As far as the filler cap, I am now starting to think the gasket is worn.

    • @lukeisaac7710
      @lukeisaac7710 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like there's to much pressure in your motor and it could be as simple as u have put to much oil in which is causing to much pressure and pushing your dipstick out a bit. Check your oil capacity for your motor
