    A brickie told me you should always drill into the brickwork as it will stay solid forever whereas drilling into the mortar bed they crumble over time. That’s why older houses often need repointing. Love the videos and your work ethic btw. 👍

    • @artisanelectrics
      @artisanelectrics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for the tip! I think I’ve done too much work in old listed buildings where you’re not allowed to drill the bricks 😂

    • @stephenjones9153
      @stephenjones9153 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm 62 now and have always mounted to the bricks and never the Mortar, you can hang off the charging cable and it will never pull the charger off the wall even if you forget and drive away.
      A couple of good tugs on the charging lead and the charger will fall off Guaranteed.

    You should relocate it.

    Since its your own house it doesn't matter but We just wire from the mains outside and have line tap off the main tails into a isolator then wire straight from that to the zappi, lovely piece of kit.

    Watching from Australia having just bought a 3 SR+.
    In Aus, all Tesla's come with the Gen 2 HPWC so will be installing that (only single phase like you so will be 32A).
    Interestingly in Aus we are required to have an isolater/switch near any EV charger.
    Surprised the UK doesn't have this requirement given you do have switches on far lower powered wall points

  • @jamesbruce1183
    @jamesbruce1183 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks great! Sorry to inform you that is NOT a charger. It is a 'smart' extension cord. The charger (battery charger) is in the car.

  • @eric4709
    @eric4709 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice to see how you connected to the existing DB and the use of those wall SWA clips ( really good) which is all common to general ccts , But ...
    ..... What would be good is : To see more about the EV testing itself which is more relevant ( in compliance with BS7671: 2018 section 722 Amd 1 ) and how the ZAPI EV charging unit complies with the requirements in BS761 2018 sect 722 regarding connecting to TN systems
    - you mentioned this right at the end .. but rather glossed over it.

    Have you seen JW’s video on EV chargers? Also, could you give us a demo of the charger in use showing us what sort of current it pulls etc, perhaps even if you could turn the electric hob/oven on to demo how it ramps back to stay under the maximum demand. Excellent video otherwise, would it be possible to wire the charger into the outside box (main incomer) with just a small main? I would be more comfortable with that amount of load staying away from my house’s main CU.

    I think the government made a mistake with the whole EV market. From the start they should have said when you have a charge point installed in your home it needs a separate meter, that way they can charge vat at 20% and calculate fuel duty.

    • @jeffb7241
      @jeffb7241 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's nothing to stop you from charging via the granny lead (supplied with most EV's) plugged into a 13A socket though.

      A good quality long drill bit for concrete and bricks, with a good drill / hammer, saves SO much time. Something that can take an hour with a shitty tools, can take 1-2 minutes with proper drill bit and drill. Love my long SDS plus drills. But the longest I own is 45cm. I guess having a longer one could be handy, but I am not a professional electrician :)

  • @davidhongkong5657
    @davidhongkong5657 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very helpful video, but one thing I may have missed is a clear statement of voltage - is it 220 or 240 volts? And, what is the charging rate in Amps or Watts? I live in Hong Kong and our standard supply is 220 volts and a geat many vehicles plug into a domestic standard 13 amp socket for EV charging. A friend's car uses 12.3 Amps for charging. The unknown is the next higher rate of charging. One neighbour with a Tesla uses 25 Amps for charging. The company meter is rated for 10 to 100 Anps AC. Three phase charging for EV's in my estate is a non starter because the local company - China Light and Power - would have to rewire the whole estate and build between 6 and 10 new sub stations to handle the load IF all the houses (5,024) wanted to charge EV's and run a home at the same time. Your comments would be helpful for background knowledge.

I am not a qualified electrician so shoot me down with the regs, but as Joe Bloggs is it wise to have a washing machine waste so close to a main consumer unit? Looking forward to seeing the model 3 . A good informative video on car charging, I have been approached to install my first car charger and this has helped.
    On my particular installation I think I am going to have issues with loading, which ,without going into details is my problem, the other issue is that it is on a TT system so I will need to look at the RCD issues as all parts of the installation are required to be protected.
    Lastly, I did not see you re-configure the Neutral and Earthing connecrions at the Distribution Board after you bumped along the Mcb's, not saying you didn't do it but it makes testing the installation a bit easier for the poor bugger who has to do the godforsaken task if all the circuits are numbered up correctly
    I will also be looking at the Zappi as an option and offering it to the customer after your comments on other brands , such as Rolec which is what we are being offered at our local wholesalers.

    2:45 Funny that this house looks same as the last video where do you talk about the charger station and the video before where do you install cables. I know this washing machine some minutes later. Why YT talk me that this Video is 5 hours old?

      Second hand Model-S is a very tempting buy right now if you live anywhere near a supercharger. Free supercharging for life can easily render the car essentially free-of-charge over a 5-10 year period compared against petrol for the same period.

    • @mabisfab77paintball
      @mabisfab77paintball 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@izools but works out same just with ev you are paying upfront for fuel/electric charging almost same as if had to buy petrol just petrol we can spread the cost par say
      12/14k for mg petrol 26/28k for a mg ev just example so lets say 10k paid up front fuel cost what lets say average of £50 a month for petrol yes service is likely to be less for electric but both will work out almost same in long haul just paying in different way much like buy ford or vw/Audi, fords was cheaper to purchase/ up front but always cost more to run/maintain so fords would cost more per month but audi would cost more upfront but less per month in parts being replaced but overall 5year ownership would balance out to roughly the same overall cost
      once all on EV cost will just be your home electric bills going even higher to cover the lost oil money, even if you dont own a EV you will be paying for it
      Electric cars are not new and are even older then henry fords first car he made because EV was too slow too limited back then so ford saw a need and filled it
      just like Tesla have
      second hand tesla seem to cost more than new probably because they have the unlimited tesla charging

      @@mabisfab77paintball .... Regardless of what you read and this is still from your time... Electric milk floats have been around for a long time.... Fords vs VW/audi... they only work out cheaper to run more often than not due to depreciation which also means nothing if your are keeping either for life/runnig it to the ground.... There is no second hand Teslas costing more than new ones other than the ones you see with inflated prices due to short supply same as with people once did with new iPhones... Most if not all main dealers want to sell you a car as to get you "onboard" and some if not all will tell you this and you will think nothing of it other they want you in their club... makes you feel wanted right?....Think again...

    What charger would you recommend that would fair best in this harsh environment

    Wow how to make '3 wires' look magic so that you can quote a ridiculous amount for installing a power unit! that thing is tiny compaired to the things we in the GPO used to fit (and that included enormous cabinates full of glass - lead acid batteries!) but we didn't make a song an dance about it. - PC again, this time for the nanny state.

    Excellent. My next car will be electric, nothing as expensive as a Tesla. My question is as I don't know what car I will go for ,which unit do I put in ( I am renovating my house top to bottom now seems a good time to put a unit in ) needs to be a unit to cover a broad range of cars. Thank you in advance.
