1978 I made mine from wood and scrap pieces from an old radio and plastic model parts. Got featured in a city newspaper and on display in a library because it was a homemade replica mire accurate than any model of the time.
+RoxyLuffer Probably he just want some vacation from the movies due to other things, i can understand that, i guess it´s way more work making those vids then it apperas.
Nice! I'v been a Cabinetmaker for 45 years and I am impressed. The work may not be precision but who cares. This is for fun. I think it's wonderful that Dylan is a fan of S.T.T.O.S. In fact, I Wish I could find a mate who loves Star Trek AND has ambitions & skills like this. If Dylan were my daughter, I'd be one proud Papa. God bless you, Dylan, and thanks. Philigan (direct from Philigan's Island)
Vince Goldthorp the materials used may have been $12, but the equipment used was definitely not. Also, the host kind of sucked she wasn't really interesting to watch, Odin is a better host.
More ideas for the phasor gun from an electronics guy. Put a small laser pointer, into a CGB electrical cord grip. Take the top piece and cut it out to hold a 3-AAA battery holder. Put a Piezo buzzer under the metal gridwork to duplicate the phasor sound, and a round doorbell button for a trigger. Would be as realistic as could be for under $20. Gonna have to build one now
This is probably the coolest and most accurate thing you guys made on this series so far. This is a prop, not some cheap knockoff like some of the other stuff XD
Everyone is complaining about her and I'm just sitting here and feeling confused. She was pretty good I don't get whats the problem with her. Kepp up with the good work and wash your hands after painting ;)
Anyone can purchase a router or a jigsaw. They're cheap. If you don't have any tools, how do you expect to build anything? I suppose you can use a tin can, a pen and some bubblegum, and a sharpy to paint it. Oh, do you even have a sharpy? A lot of people don't have a sharpy. Then again, a lot of people don't have any brain cells either....right?
I'm not a fan of her wood work. I think at the very least she could clear coat it or something first to help eliminate the really obvious wood grain texture. Nothing says SciFi Star-Trek Phaser like wood grain.
So many references! I love this video and the phaser looks AWESOME! Could you make a com badge or one of their communicators, those com badges are so awesome. Live long and prosper.
My opinion on DIY prop shop: When this first came out, with Dustin as the host, I found that it was not quite a "how to" video, but not a showcase of what he did either. Let me explain: He would often miss out when explaining some of the more crucial steps, such as how to use certain tools, and the editing skipped some important steps with him saying, after a cut, "So I put some of ___ on to these ___." But you weren't sure how he did it. As the episodes went on, it became more understandable what he was doing and why, and it became mush more of an instructional video, and easier for people to follow along with. I feel Odin really mastered this concept of explanation while keeping the video short and simple. Now though, I feel as though this video is going the wrong way. Skipping over some of the more important bits, and not really describing the process she took to get to the finished product. I hope this she/ editors/ producers/ directors can try to make it more of an instructional video. Thanks.
This is a really nice build. Pretty simple and cheap too. :D I'd love to try making this one, and perhaps add a bit more in the way of detail work at the end.
The interesting thing is that you did exactly what the crew did for the Original Series as well as a good chunk of the movies and The Next Generation in taking every day items and making props out of them. The Tricorder was made in a similar way, and that little scanning cylinder McCoy used was nothing more than a repurposed salt shaker. I really like this episode for the fact it gets right into how it was done back then. Would be interested to see how you guys go about making a TOS Tricorder.
Wow! This is pretty cool for being simplistic and virtually nice to look at.. It may not be as nice as what other customizers may do with all the bells and whistles but its cool just as a esthetic display piece
if it was me i would have used rigid foam for the body rather than wood, used a clear pen body and a cheap dollar store led flash light for the push button and for the working light effect......but nice build.
Wow. Most of these have been semi-decent, but way to go murdering a classic phaser design! Can't even get the 'embellishment' edge wire straight... Brutal.
I love your guy's builds, but for the love of god... sand and prime before you paint! I will make a handmade item look way more professional and take almost no extra time!
I like how they get different people with different approaches on the show, one person is more of a woodworker, the other more of a foamcutter, makes it interesting to see the different choices.
Thanks for taking on something NOT made entirely from cardboard or foam. The plumbing section of the hardware store always gets me to thinking about what I could make from all the neat parts. (PS: Please ignore any and all comments about hair or clothes. They never do that to the male hosts. Ever.)
+steprockmedia Of course they don't, as the male hosts don't dress in the most ridiculous hipster fashion of the moment. I'm sure if the male hosts donned some hard-gay leathers, with nipple-clamps, a buttoned-down butt-flap and codpiece, people would make comments. As it stands, they wear normal clothes.
pmodd Seriously? "Hipster" would be the guy wearing flannel, beard, and thick-rimmed glasses. You're thinking of a gay biker bar or something. At any rate, I'm not about to apologize for sticking up for a lady.
Raccoon Thing Normal for who? It's normal attire for a frumpy 70+ year old woman, but not a female 20-35 years old (she looks so fucking rough I dare not guess her age). Personally, I feel that it's a great comparison. If the guys wore hardcore gay S&M gear, it's reasonable to expect people will comment on it. If a woman 20-35 years old dyes her hair grey, and wears clothes/glasses only favored by pensioners, it's also reasonable to expect that people will comment on it. The point of comparison is the *audience reaction* to an abnormal appearance, not the degree to which the choice of attire is more common.
steprockmedia Lmao, you aren't sticking up for anyone buddy. The individual in question dressed that way to get a reaction from the viewer, be it voiced or not. Her expectation was probably "wow how cool, sick look girl", but the reality became "my grandma wants her clothes back". Also, try to read things as they were written. At no point did I say that cliche homosexual S&M gear is "hipster", I simply said that were they to dress that way, people would certainly comment on it. Would you prefer if I instead said "if the male hosts wore Teddy Bear onesies, people would comment on it". Incidentally, I once worked at a theme park when I was in University, and every Friday/Saturday night one of my colleagues (who was a really hardcore gay dude) would get changed into black vinyl boy shorts and a black vinyl singlet top after work. Dude would walk out of the gates past security, to the carpark, dressed like Hard Gay (search TH-cam to see what he looks like). Funniest thing I've ever seen in any job.
I think that every single tool used in this video is used in an inapropiate way. I would definitively not use most of those tools in this build even using the same materials. well, the jig saw is good I gues...
+MAking Props She used a router bit on her rotary tool to carve out sections to a certain depth. She used a drill to drill holes. She used a jigsaw to cut complex shapes from wood. She used a vise to clamp the piece down while she did everything else. Don't see how she used any of those tools incorrectly.
+VariablePenguin simple, the stone used on the dremel wasn't apropiate for wood, she used the rotary bit to make raised areas, which are MUCH easier to raise them using any kind of thin plastic, why did she break the front part while drilling? guess what, wrong drill bit type and too much force aplied. I can keep going on
It looks great! Nice video In addition, the tip of the phaser could be called a muzzle, at least from the point of view as a regular firearm. Emitter, maybe?
You guys should have them introduce themselves like this. "Welcome to did prop shop, my name is not Important because I'm not going to be hosting another episode"
first off if the creator of the prop sees this; do not take it as just pure bashing, what im trying to convey is constructive criticism of mistakes which where most likely due to either time and/or budget constraints. with that said as someone that makes props as a hobbyist with the aim of ''it doesn't have to be perfect but it at least has to look convincing enough to be usable on film at 48fps'' this looks like its really cheap build made with some fancy tools without any of the final steps needed to finalize that kind of build because it was done in a day by someone not experienced enough to make that combination of factors work... I've always felt there are 3 base factors in art: price to create, time it takes, and the quality of the final piece. when working as a hobbyist in a small group or alone only 2/3 can be accomplished at once... low price + good quality = long time to make, good quality + fast = expensive, and what i feel this shows; fast + low price = poor quality
The upper part is a type 1 hand phaser. lower power for local security work. The pistol grip is a type 2. the type one fits in adding power and range to the weapon.
Can't help but feel a bit disappointed. I think the original guy would have done a much better job keeping it easy and using tools that most people have. He would have also explained the step by step process better. I was looking forward to building a faser, guess that's not happening.
You can do everything she did with a basic handsaw, a coarse rasp/file, and sand paper. Additional items that would make the finished product look better would be an automotive body filler or drywall putty to fill in the grain before painting, which will leave you with a smoother finish, and maybe some satin poly clear coat.
Boo hoo, I feel so sad for the fellow who can't afford to spend $50 on tools he can use for the rest of his life. Now he can't build, or spell a phaser. Boo hoo. Go purchase a replica toy for $35 then ya cheap wad.
+A Person Mate, how much of a tightass are you? They didn't say you had to buy a Die Grinder, a Lathe and a TIG Welder. The tools they used are simple and dirt cheap. If you're an American, a Chinese Dremel-knockoff costs $17 from Walmart, with a Chinese jigsaw being $14. Even in Australia a genuine 2-speed Dremel is only $50 AUD. Many of their prop materials exceed $30 USD anyway lol.
I agree. The title says 'build your own' but not everyone owns these powertools or have the place to use powertools like that. Compared to the other guys, whose stuff can be made in the living room (except the spray painting)
+Keith Chan for the most part i would have to agree with you on this. as for the tools though, you gould get any of the tools she used pretty cheaply and with a bit of thought, you could always just use your standard dremel tool to still do pretty much everything here. using the power tool versions just makes it faster but you could still get the old traditional hand tool versions too. while being ABLE to do everything in the living room has its appeal, many of us who watch this show are usually the type who have at least some sort of work area to do this kind of stuff in.
+nn looser1 It's a valid point, she looks like some 60 year old horse riding duchess from Wales, someone who would be clay pigeon shooting with Prince Charles, this is what happens when hipsterdom goes unchecked and is left alone to flourish
hate to break it to you but you got some of the parts actually backwards like the top portion that's colored black that is actually supposed to be the type 1 phaser that is inserted into the pistol grip portion....... although it seems very close in appearance your kind of off in some areas..... I actually have a real replica of the type 2 phaser.... so I would know if you've got portions of yours backwards and in the wrong area
Power pack too thick. Nozzle bulb too long. Wire flourish looks aweful. Like the idea of the pen clicker as a trigger though. A for effort. But please stop the mugging to the camera.
This is cool and all, but most of us don't do the whole woodworking thing. DIY props are fun, but if it's something we can't do, then there's no fun to be had. Still a great video to watch!! :)
Of all the new hosts they have been trying out i liked the one who did the StarCraft build. To me his finished product looked the best even though mid build I thought it looked like crap and he explained his steps very well, making it easy for people who wanted to try it at home. If AWE me has pick one of these new host pleas epick him.
pls bring back the cardboard dude or the fat foam dude.. even the awesome hair foam dude would be ok
+Marco DRT Dillan is not coming back sadly, but yeah the guy who made the starcraft templar staff was cool. had some nice tricks and good explenation.
Exactly
+Matze Oderso Who's Dillan? You mean Dustin?
The foam dudes are cool but Dylan is just so adorable
+Marco DRT They should bring back Vinny, from the companion cube episode
DID NOBODY NOTICED SHE MOUNTED THE TOP OF THE PHASER WRONG????
Diego Alvardo I was specifically looking for a comment like this
Same here, how can you be a fan and mount the hand phaser backwards into the pistol phaser? Great try though!!
Hand phaser mounted backwards, a real fan? probably not. At least she could look at her own photo a 0:12 in.
Yup.
The whole type-II phaser was built as a mirror-image. ie the left-side details are on the right side
her style choice really makes her look 70! lol
+Edtweet For a moment, in the intro montage, I thought she was the older woman from Man At Arms Reforged. lol
+•Finn• I was thinking the same! She looks like a young version of her, especially with the hair and glasses
+Edtweet Apparently, it's the new trend amongst females. Why young women would want to look elderly is beyond me.
+Edtweet Yeah wtf, I mean I'm all for dressing how you like but this is not a good look by any stretch of the imagination, it's not even "trendy"
kinda funny seeing as women complain once they get older about their age and yet they make their style look as if they already are old.
1978 I made mine from wood and scrap pieces from an old radio and plastic model parts. Got featured in a city newspaper and on display in a library because it was a homemade replica mire accurate than any model of the time.
What happened to the guy from last week!? Bring him back!!
They seem to be swtiching around between 3 different hosts, i know, it's Weird and confusing but that's how it is
well, I know which shows I'M watching.
+RoxyLuffer I liked him
+RoxyLuffer
Probably he just want some vacation from the movies due to other things, i can understand that, i guess it´s way more work making those vids then it apperas.
I know how much work goes into it, i'm not star struck
Nice! I'v been a Cabinetmaker for 45 years and I am impressed. The work may not be precision but who cares. This is for fun. I think it's wonderful that Dylan is a fan of S.T.T.O.S.

Philigan (direct from Philigan's Island)
Why is everyone making rude comments about the host? She seems awesome and the phaser looks brilliant considering it was made using only $12!
I Agree!!
+1
Vince Goldthorp the materials used may have been $12, but the equipment used was definitely not. Also, the host kind of sucked she wasn't really interesting to watch, Odin is a better host.

Please make Luke skywalker's lightsaber or Rey's staff from the force awakens
Oh yes rey staff
Han solo blaster DL-44
make all of it from PVC
+todd galley but a lightsaber is a weapon
***** are you kidding me? It's used to kill people... Major weapon in Star Wars. You don't just "play" with it.
This is probably the coolest and most accurate thing you guys made on this series so far. This is a prop, not some cheap knockoff like some of the other stuff XD
This has most likely been pointed out, the hand phaser is in backwards.
Odin does good work. He gets my vote to take over this show fulltime.
Everyone is complaining about her and I'm just sitting here and feeling confused. She was pretty good I don't get whats the problem with her.
Kepp up with the good work and wash your hands after painting ;)
Fogas 21 she's using tools that a lot of people dog have or can't use which defeats the purpose of the show
Anyone can purchase a router or a jigsaw. They're cheap. If you don't have any tools, how do you expect to build anything? I suppose you can use a tin can, a pen and some bubblegum, and a sharpy to paint it. Oh, do you even have a sharpy? A lot of people don't have a sharpy. crazy how much detail they put into the original props. awesome build!
I'm not a fan of her wood work. I think at the very least she could clear coat it or something first to help eliminate the really obvious wood grain texture. Nothing says SciFi Star-Trek Phaser like wood grain.

Scotty wore a red shirt the entire run of the series, and he was only killed once that I know of. He got better though.
This is a really nice build. Pretty simple and cheap too. :D
I'd love to try making this one, and perhaps add a bit more in the way of detail work at the end.
OMG, the Type I phaser on top is backwards! So dangerous!
Why are so many people complaining about what she looks like? Who cares! It's about the props!
jscheetz03 yeah and hers suck too
jscheetz03 it's the Internet
I'm getting a Luna Lovegood vibe with her.
We have stepped into another level of geek with this one.
Awe Me don't you dare get rid of her...ever!
Is she 20 or 70? I can't tell.
+solesearched Then you just have fucked up eyes..
+Don't push the B button
B
+Fogas 21 nooooooooooooooo
yeah me neither
+Fogas 21 B to blow skills?
The interesting thing is that you did exactly what the crew did for the Original Series as well as a good chunk of the movies and The Next Generation in taking every day items and making props out of them. She actually did a pretty good job, considering the complexity of it
Lightsaber!!!!!!! Yooooo how has this not been made!!!!!!
I would like to see a build of the Jaffa Staff Weapon from Stargate.
There are people selling castings of the screen used ones.
The phaser she made has charm. I like it!
I like how they get different people with different approaches on the show, one person is more of a woodworker, the other more of a foamcutter, makes it interesting to see the different choices.
OMG she's friken adorable!
You got the type one phaser on back words
That is the funniest thing that I have seen in a long time! It's like watching a cartoon!
+pmodd That doesn't even compare to what she's wearing in this video... She's wearing normal clothes.
pmodd Seriously? "Hipster" would be the guy wearing flannel, beard, and thick-rimmed glasses. You're thinking of a gay biker bar or something. At any rate, I'm not about to apologize for sticking up for a lady.

Does anyone else think that the dremel is just the cutest tool on earth?
I think that every single tool used in this video is used in an inapropiate way. I would definitively not use most of those tools in this build even using the same materials.
well, the jig saw is good I gues...
+MAking Props Well, sometimes you need to improvise.
I can keep going on
+MAking Props I thought she broke the front part because she hit that massive knot in the wood.
+VariablePenguin if you use your tools properly, no knot, no joints, no fibers are an excuse
I love this! The new host is cool ^^
Also, EVERYTHING NEEDS MORE STAR TREK
Just stick with the companion cube guy!
Brit'N'Birb of Odin
*or
All the negative comments, yet you keep coming back. Just admit it, Dylan's attractive and fun to watch
please stop switching hosts thank you.
+11kakuzu yeah. Just stick with Vinny Logozio.
yhea
right tho just keep odin
+11kakuzu They're probably just trying to see which one people like most before making a decision, give them a few episodes.
miss Dustin
It looks great! Nice video
In addition, the tip of the phaser could be called a muzzle, at least from the point of view as a regular firearm.
Emitter, maybe?
Um... Where's Dustin?
+rafa souza he left . permanently
+GreenGiantSlayer why?
+GreenGiantSlayer NOOOOOOO. (Darth Vader Voice) why?
+rafa souza he got a new job so he had to quit. if you watch his star wars helmet vid he explains why
+xLawr He's got a new gig, I believe. He's also busy with his own TH-cam channel. Here he is on FB if you wanna hit him up. facebook.com/dustinmclean
You know, dylan's really smart. Only a super smart badass to not use safety goggles. 11/10 dylan

Randy Brown Not very good. The paint is crooked, wood was a bad choice because of the texture. It screams cheap
+Antonius Kazakov but it's meant to be cheap
+Stalkingazn but its not supposed to look cheap. it's supposed to be cheap and look expensive
+xLawr But it doesn't, it looks grossly cheap. Like something kids would make at school. Cos-players wouldn't even use that.
I don't understand this. All of the comments I've seen are really negative. Am I the only one that truly loved this video?
What happened to the original host? I liked him.
he left for another job opportunity

+PokemonPlayz why, he wasnt that good
this is super awesome, nice vid as always

I made one a few years ago and I used this video to make it look way better

Why are you so rude?
+nn looser1 cuz we want dustin
+nn looser1 who saying lookin like a grandma is bad?
+nn looser1 It's a valid point, she looks like some 60 year old horse riding duchess from Wales, someone who would be clay pigeon shooting with Prince Charles, this is what happens when hipsterdom goes unchecked and is left alone to flourish
So true.
how thick was the wood and how deep were the cuts for the type on and two phasers
pretty girl, but what is goin on with her hair ?....and that nose ring -.-
Woah dude...
what does it matter to you? don't like it? keep it to yourself.
Are you a Christian?
+Andi X I agree with you. I'm not a big fan of shoving the most rings anywhere and everywhere.
The old lady is just trying to be trendy. What's the problem?
Pip-Boy 3000 from Fallout 3 would be awesome!
This looked so sloppy.
She needs work.

Shirley Edwards bubgfgf
The only thing keeping me subbed to this channel are the man at arms builds.
yes, she's not that good but she's not that bad either.Cut her some slack...
right, this is diy on a budget where you work with what's lying around not the best quality, but the best that can be done !
hate to break it to you but you got some of the parts actually backwards like the top portion that's colored black that is actually supposed to be the type 1 phaser that is inserted into the pistol grip portion....... although it seems very close in appearance your kind of off in some areas..... I actually have a real replica of the type 2 phaser.... so I would know if you've got portions of yours backwards and in the wrong area
Please stick with Dustin
Dustin left to go work for someone else
+ethyn woodruffbelts nooooooooo
That other guy that built that portal thing
She did perfectly good job. Keep it up!
Barely good enough for a child's costume accessory. Didn't even try to make it look nice.
I think thats the look she was going for. Make it look like the fake gun John Dillinger made out of a bar of soap to break out of jail.
Bill23799 when a prop is so bad they start to think it was done intentionally
who else misses Dustin 😭😭😭
Me
Power pack too thick. Nozzle bulb too long. Wire flourish looks aweful. Like the idea of the pen clicker as a trigger though. A for effort. But please stop the mugging to the camera.
Nice job! Looks awesome!
omg not this girl again...
A solid clear coat in the end would do this build wonders and prevent its looks from deteriorating.
Im going out as a red shirt this halloween and this really helped me THANK YOU!! ❤️❤️
And here lies Heavenly Athena she died on October 31 2016 from memers she went as a redshirt
This is cool and all, but most of us don't do the whole woodworking thing. DIY props are fun, but if it's something we can't do, then there's no fun to be had. Still a great video to watch!! :)
Does anyone know where I can find some information on how props were made for the original series
Is that a Maserati cap in the background?
You did a great job.☺
Very very nice build !
the memory eraser thingy from mib?
or maybe a custom lightsaber?
I wish we could just have the guy that did the GoW Lancer for every episode
I would love to see another diy Star Wars thing besides the x-wing pilot helmet. Maybe Boba Fett's helmet?
Love the build.. that's thinking outside of the box... But I hope she knows that the hand held Phaser on top is in backwards??
A step in the right direction now just to do the Compression Rifle from the movie First Contact.
Fantastic job. Anyone know what the song is when she is using the red jigsaw?
The whole thing is a mess of inaccuracy but that’s what I love about it. It’s uniquely her.😊👍
I like this gal, her bubbly attitude is great. honestly I didn't find the build to be all that interesting.
awe me you're one of the coolest channels on youtube great keep it up but please bring back dustin
He's got a different job
+Kingdomhearts685 i know he's on cinefix
I think that Batman`s Grappling Gun would be cool
What dremel bit did you use?
I like very much and the phaser is cool too keep going babe you have real talent.
i think a costume piece would be cool to see on the next show.
when are they going to make a lightsaber hilt?
It always amazes me that you can make pretty good looking props out of basically junk.
its made almost entirety of wood. I would have preferred a method that didn't call for a chunk of wood and heavy tools.
Nice work!
Q:What did Spock find in the Enterprise toilet?
A:The Captains log! 🤔
Of all the new hosts they have been trying out i liked the one who did the StarCraft build. To me his finished product looked the best even though mid build I thought it looked like crap and he explained his steps very well, making it easy for people who wanted to try it at home. If AWE me has pick one of these new host pleas epick him.
