  • Today I installed a gates timing belt kit on my 2011 Subaru WRX Hatch without removing the radiator or fans! Most people do it as it could make it easier but it honestly wasnt hard at all with it all being intact. Hope this video helps out and id suggest watch a couple more videos on others doing it too for more references. I had 2 different videos i was watching on this to install it. Hope you enjoy and peace!

Not gonna lie, I'm super impressed, but you would save sooo much frustration pulling the radiator and fans. Also it is typically a good idea to replace the water pump when changing the timing belt. Typically do the thermostat at the same time since it's easy peasy. Still, wow! Glad it worked out.

Thanks alot man! Also it didn't cause me any frustration besides that one idler pully but I just didnt know the best way of putting it in. The only reason why I didnt do the water pump and thermostat as I work at Subaru and the high up techs say they usually never have problems so I'll do it next timing belt change around 180k miles probably if I still own it by then! Lol

Yeah that's totally fair. Theoretically the water pump could last hundreds of thousands of miles. Same with the thermostat. Especially if you still have the OE items, not a bad bet.
I mostly just find stuff like removing the crank pulley and timing cover bolts easier with the rad out. Plus it's easier to check timing marks. Everything is easier when it is fairly new and not super rusty though!

You didn't show how you take off the cover, makes no sense.

It's just a bunch of screws on the front cover and it comes off. Thought it wasn't necessary. My bad
