He's active due to heat stress. They don't like it above 24°C (they die at 26°C) and your hands are heating him up above that. That's the main reason why I don't recommend handling them.

Great video. I have 5 tiger salamanders, in a 48"X18" terrarium, with doors that slide on each side. I have a land side, and a water side, separated with a cork log. If you keep the water shallow, about 2", they will swim a bit, or just hang out in the water. I tried sprigtails years ago, and they do a great job keeping the tank clean. I have been using New Zealand sphagnum moss for years, love it, and it's mold resistant.

Love the suggestion of Springtails! Do you find that they ever worm their way out of the container and become a nuisance elsewhere? I have a large terrarium with Eco Earth and would very much be interested in these helpful critters.
Additionally, I had been told that they love earthworms and that these are a great food source. I definitely am thankful I stumbled across this in my first week on this amphibian adventure, I will be seeking out some insects to help supplement Sally's food source!
    Thanks tons!

Earthworms are actually suited perfectly nutrition-wise for tiger salamanders, and most salamanders really. They're quite nutritious and their calcium to phosphorus ratio is perfect, while crickets and other common feeder insects require calcium dusting and other vitamin dusting. The caudata site has a whole page detailing salamander nutrition; the site in general is a great resource for this information. The information you're giving for their diet sounds more like something suited to leopard geckos.

I have about two inches of potting soil as a substrate, a water receptacle and some forest bark and material for her to crawl under. I've installed a digital thermometer/ Hygrometer to monitor her enclosure for humidity. What do you do to keep your humidity to around 70% ?

I wouldn't feel as bad if I bought a captive bred specimen.I would like to keep and breed a species that was native and could benefit from captive breeding programs.

if you handle amphibians often, their skin gets dry and they can't breathe very well because they breathe with their skin. And salamanders are carnivores, so they don't eat plants.

Hi there! I´ve been doing a lot of research on salamander care lately and I just noticed that there´s a difference between a spotted salamander and a tiger salamander (thought they were pretty much the same just different names, mixed them up due to their looks), and I was just wondering if you happened to know the "exact" differences between the two to make sure I wouldn´t accidentally end up with the wrong type of habitat and care etc. From what I´ve read I haven´t been able to find that many differences. Thanks!

Is it okay to hold the salamander sometimes like you would a lizard if you wear gloves and wet them with dechlorinated water?

I have seen some people say it's not good to handle them a lot because they have sensitive skin, but I was wondering if I wore gloves and wet them with dechlorinated water, would handling them still be harmful? Or is it just because of the salts, oils and etc on the skin?

Yes! As long as you take those precautions to keep their skin free of irritation!

Okay, I have one question. Where did you get Ponyo? I have really wanted a pet salamander in general for a long time, and I don’t really know where to get one.

Really informative video!! I really wish that this had come out before I got my salamander- but I am looking forward to be a better salamander owner! Also, where can you get the spring worms? (Side note: Ponyo looks so cute!)

I've had a setup like that for years, just keep the water side shallow, maybe around 2" deep or so, and make sure it's easy to get in ans out of the water, I use a cork log to separate the two sides.

Well I have a tiger salamander but by accident. My friend had caught some mud puppies and I took one. Over time it started to change its form I thought it was normal but then I started to research and it turned out it was a Tiger salamander. And I have no idea what I should do I do take care of it like keeping the tank moist and feeding it insects but I don’t know if I should release it because it came from the wild so should I release it back?

It might die if u release it after keeping it for too long, but it might be ok also, 50-50 chance, who knows
