    Hii Madison here! I would like the record to reflect that I thought Nami had lied to Arlong - I thought that the map container thing was a setup. I thought she handed Arlong an empty tube when she left with him and left Luffy to die. I BELIEVED.

    I think a lot of the “Nami is peak waifu” comes from current Nami. She still has a lot of growing to do, but that’s one of the things I love about One Piece. The characters grow so much over the course of the story.

    To Nami's credit... she was the only person in the ENTIRE village that had the guts to do anything about their oppression. However, I do agree that, after all that time she spent with pirates, she was naive to think that Arlong wouldn't do her dirty in the end.

  • @1stgenkpopfan646

    She sought Arlong out, yes, but the way saw it was that the village was either going to be fucked until she got the money, or they were fucked indefinitely. It was a lose-lose but only one even offered a glimpse of freedom.
    And yes she offered herself up, but the end scene makes it clear that Arlong had no intention of ever letting her or her village off the hook.

    I agree with your take. The show runners made some changes to make Nami more sympathetic, but in the end I think they made her a worse person. Originally, Nami is kidnapped by Arlong and made a slave, so the village plans a suicide mission to rebel and save her. To avoid that, Nami joins Arlong's crew so she's seen as a traitor, not a captive, eventually making the deal with him. Her sister also knows the plan the whole time and the two girls stay close; in fact the reason her sister gets tattoos is to match Nami and make her feel better about the Arlong tattoo. The village eventually learns about the plan, but they feign ignorance and ostracize Nami hoping she'll give up and live a happy life.
    In this version when Nami joined Arlong, did no one think to question that? Her sister and the town who knew Nami her whole life just assume she's a pos?

  • @christianschmid1440
    @christianschmid1440 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Arlong didn't break his word. Part of the deal was, that Nami brings him the money by sunrise.
    She didn't do it. The reason for that doesn't really matter.
    So he is a rotten fish stick but he didn't technically break his promise.
    So based on that Nami wasn't wrong to trust Arlongs words. It is more of a monkey paw situation. You have to take the loop holes into account as well.
    Based on your reaction I am 80% sure you would find the anime's take on Nami's story way more satisfying. :)

    • @AnimeDateNight

      But they started the attack on the village in the middle of the night. They didn't even wait for her to fail.

    • @christianschmid1440
      @christianschmid1440 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@AnimeDateNight Not attacking the village wasn't part of the deal either. His words were 'Bring me the money [...] and I consider the matter closed." You can interpret it as "I am not going to attack the village unless you bring me the money." but he didn't say that explicitly.
      As I said Arlong isn't by any means the good guy or justified in what he is doing, but he didn't break the contract.

    I think what nami did honestly was the only way and the best way. Its obvious she was playing the long game, and yes she extorted her village for him but it was to eventually free her village. If she hadn't there would have been no end in sight but now that there was a set goal for their freedom she is willing to do what ever to make it. Nami didnt join him so that he would stop exploiting them i until she got the money she joined him so that he would stop when she got the money.e literally would not have been able to prevent arlong using them but she knew her villiage is strong and they would be able to handle it. She did what she could do in that situation. So id give her more credit she was a child who was willing to basically join a gang and be chained up for years just drawing maps for other people. I don't see any of the adults in the villiage having courage like that. So yea she could have apologized but she didnt need to she wouldn't have been able to stop the extortion during the time at all. At least she was working to end it. that's how i see it at least.

    Most people would have written Nami off after the betrayal. Zoro and Usopp are proof. Only Sanji and Luffy kept the faith. Luffy and the word intelligence should never be in the same sentence, but Luffy does have a gift of reading people for who they really are. He also has a gift of getting into trouble. This gift is usually a curse and a comedic situation for the rest of the crew most of the time , but there are times we’re it is a real blessing because it allows Luffy to seek out the most dangerous obstacle and deal with it as the captain of the Strawhats should b

    I just read the description, am halfway through watching, but what you said is totally fair. They really cut a lot of corners here in the live action and did some weird things to make up for it. It's easy for long-time fans to look over it because we can fill in the blanks with what we know from the anime and manga. This arc in the anime/manga is much deeper and makes perfect sense all the way through. In the anime, for example, Nami was taken by Arlong and THEN they made the deal. I have no idea why they made Nami approach Arlong instead. I'm happy with what we got here overall, but there are some issues for sure. Watching your reaction here made it a bit more obvious just how much is out of whack TBH 😅
    I'd be super interested to see how you find this part of the story in the anime in comparison to the Live Action if you guys end up watching it 😊 would be cool!

    I truly think there is a huge misunderstanding here…. I hope to explain some things. I know I’m behind on this channel, and I know you are caught up. I hope this fills in gaps.
    In the “source material” Nami was left mentally scarred by the events that occurred. The villagers caught the children and told them to run away from the islands and to never come back. All of that to save Bellemere and the two kids. (If the kids didn’t arrive at the house, Bellemere could lie her way out of it.) But before the children could stop crying, Bellemere announced she had 2 daughters. She did this because of 2 reasons. 1. She knew the villagers would tell her children to run away. And she knew that wasn’t a life she wanted for her kids. 2. Each Marine believes in his/ her own brand of Justice. Bellemere’s Justice was telling the truth and being an honorable person. She tried to live to that creed her whole life. So her sacrificing herself saves her kids, and lets her die with her integrity intact.
    Afterwards Nami became obsessed with money. Because in her mind, money could have saved Bellemere, and she never wants to go through that loss again. She doesn’t decide to join Arlong, she’s in fact kidnapped for her nap making skills. In this state, she creates the plan to buy the village back. She hates Arlong, but sees him as the solution. Remember she’s like 7 years old. She’s naive. And because of this, she clings onto the hope that the deal will be honored.
    Growing up Nami saw no use for friends because all she thought about was getting the $100M Berry. No matter the cost. So she pushed everyone she loves away. She lied, cheated, and stole her way throughout life to reach her goal. In her mind it was a small sacrifice to make to free everyone she loved. She set herself to be the bad guy to save the village.
    The village initially upset about Namis teaming up with Arlong, eventually found out what she was doing. And tried to keep her cover. So they acted like they hated her. All while keeping an eye on her from a distance.
    Nami does not do this to be malicious. She does it out of necessity to save her village. She feels trapped in a hopeless situation. Living a life with no one by her side has made her weary of trust. Which is why she doesn’t ask for help. She takes the burden on herself and it breaks her. Luffy agrees to help Nami because he is an excellent judge of character most times. He knows everything she did wasn’t because she was a bad person. In Nami, he sees a person in need of desperate help. Something he will never ignore or turn away from. 🏴‍☠️

    Just know, if people are mad with you about how you don't understand Nami and how you would understand it better in the original, then that just means you are right with your judgement. You judged the show with what it gave you and found flaws within it. Nothing wrong with that.

    It's refreshing to see someone side with Zoro here 3:53, not necessarily because he's right, but a lot of people just side with Sanji on this one. In my humble opinion neither of them are right, Zoro takes it at face value, and Sanji is... well, it would seem Nami could've done practically anything and he'd believe in her. Both of them could be said to be naive in this scenario.

    If you’ve watched the anime first, you might hate her even more that this😂 (spoiler) there aren’t any scene of her being sympathetic to the crew, just constantly being a greedy b*tch that tags along. Even after the reveal of her motivation she still does some questionable things and I was so conflicted about her. But all of that concludes well with in-depth explanation and emotional scenes to make us understand in the end.
    So yea. This arc is definitely the weakest compared to the anime, while Sanji’s was kinda weak there.
