In the live action I think they didnt really express Namis struggle and represent her situation well enough, especially with the change of HER approaching them to join as opposed to the real story of her being kidnapped and essentially groomed to work for them. The live action was attempting to make it seem like she was independently girl bossing at the age of 10 to try and save the village in secret, but it didnt show the absolute hell and struggle that she went through for YEARS having to steal from pirates and being beaten and cut and running from people shes stolen from. Not to mention they didnt represent the beatings Arlong would also give her and mental abuse.
Its likely that this small change was what lead you astray into questioning Namis morality or where the blame should lay. Either way however, Nami had no other options as the Marines were paid off and the island was surrounded with Fishman. She either works for Arlong, or she never leaves that Island and watches her hometown be slowly murdered over the years. She witnessed Arlong kill any Marines who WERENT paid off as well, so she fully gave up on the idea that Arlong could be beaten by anyone. To her resistance of any kind wasnt an option, it would only lead to death. In the Anime/Manga having to watch her mother get shot in the head and then watch as they butchered Gen-san almost killing him, she screamed "NO MORE KILLING" and refused any option that would result in people being hurt moving forward. Paying Arlong off was the perfect answer to everything and even though it would make sense that he would break his promise...... it was literally the ONLY hope she had, she had to try.

"In the live action I think they didnt really express Namis struggle and represent her situation well enough, especially with the change of HER approaching them to join as opposed to the real story of her being kidnapped"
Thank you for taking the time to explain the changes we're seeing and to contextualize Madison's opinion. I (Corbin) have seen the anime so I know Arlong kidnapped her. Madison has never seen the anime so has no way of knowing that.
_She either works for Arlong, or she never leaves that Island and watches her hometown be slowly murdered over the years_
Madison has no way of knowing Arlong was holding the village hostage. In the live action, that's never said. the village said Nojiko told them "she was trying to protect them." Never that they were held hostage. - Corbin

@@AnimeDateNight I think the fact that hes set up base and is requiring payments from them is enough to get the idea that he might be holding the island hostage. The time restraints really reduced how much dialogue and explanation can go into each episode unfortunately. A lot of things will be implied information.

That is not made clear in the live action. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
"You think nami would make that deal if there was any other option?"
We barely know this character. Why would I give her that much benefit of the doubt when she's been actively dismissive and disdainful to the rest of the crew? About Sanji thing for Nami that's his character he just simping for every woman if his crewmate is a woman he'll simping for them even harder.

Plus, earlier in episode 6, Nami tried to get Luffy to leave when she found out Arlong was there. She was afraid of Arlong and what he could do to the people she cared about. Nami was naive to think that by pushing people away she was protecting them. She acted as a buffer, dealing with Arlong so those she cared about didn't have to. That was my take away.

In anime version Arlong just forced Nami to join his crew. And when she just appeared in the village saying to everybody she wants to join his crew herself instead of just running away from him. And people don't understand why and when started to hate her. But in live action this purt just looks completely different. Thats why to the ones who don't watched the original version this situation may look different

You don't understand she was only a kid when she joined Arlong. She grew on that environment and holding into the beleive that what she is doing is the right way. talking about logic when you just don’t get the simplest point here just because you don’t like Nami. Arlong never wanted the money. he has enough. he wanted her to stay so she can keep on drawing maps. Splitting the money with Nezumi and letting Nami know she can’t save her village is a win win for him because then she would be his “slave” basically forever.

10:45 the Fishman you only see playing poker with Nami last episode has the name of a character from the manga who was an Octopus. I'd guess he wasn't included because they didn't have the budget to make that look work.
He shows up later in what would be season 4 or 5 with a bigger role, so theoretically we might get an appearance if we are extraordinarily lucky.

I think Nami will make more sense after reading the manga. They told her story brilliantly, but there are small changes to her backstory that make her choices feel more “natural” if that makes sense. She jumped head first into responsibility as a child, and didn’t make fully “logical” choices but was so determined and resourceful that she was making those “bad choices” work for her.

Since I didn't see anyone else explain it yet and hes my favorite character... Yes you were right! The attack names Sanji yells out are indeed In French! I believe they usually reference particular "cuts of meat," and it usually ends up to relaying to where he is kicking. Like he said "Epaulet!" Which is shoulder meat, and he aimed right at the Joint in Koribi's neck/shoulder. Then "Poutrine" is stomach I believe ? And he kicked him right in the stomach! And then "Muton Shot" ? Is referencing "Mutton" or a rack [ribs] of lamb annnd he just kicked Korobi in the ribs and sent him flying. So yea, its usually a way of announcing where he is striking kinda 😅. Also! Since Sanji is a chef and he wants to make people happy with his cooking? He won't fight using his hands ...because if his hands were to be injured..god forbid he broke an arm or wrist or something?? He wouldnt be able to cook anymore! Thats why he only fights with his legs. With kicks. Zeff taught him! And those kicks? Are no joke! 😂 in the anime/manga...his kicks are capable of destroying a building 😂😂
Anyway, I just thought I'd share since no one else mentioned it yet!

There is something to understand about Nami... A simple thing. When she made that deal, she was like 8 yo, how do you a child of that age, have that relfexion process to see the lies in Arlong words ?
She's been enslaved really young, so growing up, even if she begin to doubt about the deal, she was just trapped, and all that work (maps) she has done as a slave, would be done for nothing. She had only ONE hope.
At least she tried to find a way to save the village, while the others were just accepting that situation. The reason why she did not tell about the deal to anybody is so obvious, really. Nami wanted all the cards in her hands... By knowing about the deal, the villagers, even trying to act bad about Nami, would fake the situation, she wanted them to hate her for real, to make it legit and not making Arlong suspicious (he's really smart). And even if the village wanted to help, what could they do ? Huh ? They are not strong enough and marines in charge of the area are corrupted by Arlong.
Nami was just stuck in the only hope possible.

It makes sense that Arlong would betray Nami. His cartographic skills, and therefore her, are more valuable to him and his projects than 100 million berries. He wants to dominate the 4 seas, and when that happens, 100 million will be nothing. He makes this fake deal with Nami to keep her with him. He certainly would have found a way for her to continue mapping the world, without the intervention of Luffy and the crew. Everything is logical.

It’s never said in the show that the town was being held hostage and I (Madison) didn’t pick up on the implication. I guess it just hit me like - she talks all this mess about how much smarter she is than other people but keeps believing Arlong. Which goes back to the age thing.
Thank you again for pointing out your POV and points with consideration :)

    • @nandnishrivastava5654
      @nandnishrivastava5654 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@AnimeDateNightIt indeed has been heavily implied both directly and indirectly several times. Let me remind you of all the times it has been said -:
      1. Arlong told Luffy "Humans have enslaved Fishman for far too long , it is now your turn to face the same" in response to answering what he has done to Coco Village.
      2. Slavery is the core theme of Arlong's character, where he previously faced it and is now enforcing it on others, he says that loudly a lot of times.
      3. We see in the flashback of Nami that Arlong collects money on a regular basis for no reason and kills them if they don't have enough. This process has been continued for 8 years, we got the confirmation of it when the Police Dude tells Nami " We don't have enough money right now, Arlong has bled us dry" , also a woman tells the Police dude just before Nami arrives that, "do we have more time, we don't have enough money for this month" , meaning that Arlong takes the money on a monthly basis.
      4. Nami was locked by Handcuffs in her Map room, we see it in ep7 when she enters the room and glares upon them, and the second time in ep8 when she as a child is shown bleeding while her handcuffs are on.
      5. When Nami in ep7 goes back to the party occuring in Arlong Park, she says that she wants to talk about Coco Village. Arlong replies that "Coco Village will still be there, as long as they pay the tribute". So, you can't say that it hasn't been confirmed or made Clear that the village is being taken hostage.

    • @AnimeDateNight
      @AnimeDateNight  ปีที่แล้ว

      1. I (Madison) took that to mean that he was cruel and abusive to humans cos humans were cruel and abusive to fish men.
      2. This is clear.
      3. I guess I took this to be like Arlong having claimed a region like a drug lord or mob boss would, with regular payments for protection. I didn’t take it to mean a literal hostage situation.
      4. This I did notice. But it contrasts so hard with her approaching him to sign up that I didn’t fully register that she was actually being honest. She’s lied a lot, with a lot on the line before.
      5. I figured they were nomadic in some way, being that they’re pirates and we’ve seen them in different locations.
I think a lot of y’all in these comments are forgetting that this is my literal first time ever watching the show and there are narrative changes from the version so many of y’all have watched.
Some of y’all have watched these eps a few times so can naturally make the connections between differences scenes.
I can say that it wasn’t clear. Cos it wasn’t - to me and I’m 1/2 of this channel. Corbin and Bonerje have both seen the show, and multiple episodes multiple times.
Y’all can feel differently but holy moly…

Something I'm going to point out that I am likely not the first to mention.
I don't know (yet) if you intend to watch the anime, or read the manga, but originally, and to keep spoilers of the differences to a minimum, Nami had told Nojiko *years* ago what she was doing (but still wanted Nojiko not to tell the town, but she did anyway), so basically all the townspeople and Nojiko were putting up a front so Arlong and his crew wouldn't catch on to what Nami was doing or that they knew. (Among other reasons that I'll leave for you to discuss on your own if and when you get there).
Short version: the townsfolk make a quick turn around on Nami here because in the source material, the hate was an act.

Actually live action Nami and Usoppe is much more likeable, anime version they are not very likeable. To be fair, Nami never said she’s part of the crew, she was stuck with them because of the map and series of events, so technically she didn’t betray them. :P

(around eight or nine minutes into the reaction) Y'know what? Siding with Arlong over Nami is still a lot more reasonable than this one reacter who decided to side with Nezumi (ratty marine) on behalf of what Arlong got across to him. (Probably extremely right-wing person 🤮🤮)

I literally said that if Arlong had treated Nami right, she’d have stayed of her own volition

I think it fair that she doesn't like nami as much in the live action....i love one piece and i can admit that nami story didnt hit me the same in the live action ....i feel that the choice they made definitely dampered the impact.
