  • 😄 This video is sharing about the replacing/changing brake pads of my 2015 Ford Transit 350 3.7 liter van. Below is a detailed breakdown:
    Risk vs. Reward:
I took the risk of doing this myself, though with a lot of advice from mechanic friends and other youtube videos listed below. The beginning cost estimation was the local Ford dealership cost as of 2018 year end: $550-650 for both brake pads (parts, labor, taxes, etc). I paid slightly less for all of my time, learning, and equipment. Hopefully, the savings for our family will increase over time, and simultaneously our kids increase in learning and working as they grow up. So, there were several reasons and rewards for doing this on my own, but still I tried to minimize the risk. Here's the youtube playlist of several videos with more helpful info, tips, and tricks -- • 2016 Ford Transit - Ho... .

    4. $30 for Torque Wrench 1/2 -- (www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b/....
    5. $7 for socket adapter 1/2" to 3/8" -- (www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b/....

    10. $14 for Amazon.com Cartman 16" Universal Anti-Slip Cross Wrench, Lug Wrench -- (amzn.to/2X1rICQ) -- 21mm (13/16") side/end fit the lug nuts.
Parts Recommendation Options per a brake company:
    1. Cars that have a lot of heating and towing: Carbon ceramic PFC from O'Reillys or, if not available, Fleets company: Search www.oreillyauto.com/ or www.apcautotech.com/brands/ce... or www.napabrakes.com/products/b....
    2. Cars with normal driving: Akebono brake pads, mainly sold by Napa Auto parts: Search akebonobrakes.com/.
    Wise tips that were helpful:
    1. Ensure van is on level ground.
    2. Jack and support van to prevent injury.
    3. Use nitrile gloves to grip tools and parts while preventing oil and greese on the hands, etc.
    4. Prepare and learn.
    5. Use grease on moving parts (brake pad clips and brake pad caliper bolts).
    6. Loosen brake fluid cap in the engine compartment, which was the white tank and blank cap showing DOT 4 brake fluid seemingly attached to the steering column, before adjusting the brake pad caliper pistons. Also, prevent anything from going into the fluid reservoir so that the fluid is not contaminated.
    Estimated time to replace:
    1. DIY: 1-3 hours, depends on variables like how easily (or difficult) the brake pad caliper piston goes in as well as the context of the brakes are sound and nothing else needs replacing or fixing.
    2. Dealership: 2-5 hours, depends on their daily schedule and priorities.
Next time in replacing the brake pads:
    1. Might buy an impact wrench to remove the lug nuts, like the Milwaukee 1/2 in. Impact Wrench with Rocker Switch and Detent Pin Socket Retention from Home Depot (www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee....
    2. I will discern the experience of the current, new brake pads how well they performed and length of use before replacing. Maybe I use the same per the lifetime warranty or change.

You forgot to mention drive side caliber piston turns clock wise and the passenger side caliber piston turns counter clock wise there is an arrow showing which way to turn them.

I'm having a really hard time pushing back the caliper piston in the rear passenger side, even opening the brake fluid cap, or bleeding some brake fluid off the little tit, still no go... to the point I bent the plate of the rented tool that pushes it back. I was only able to push it back 3/4 of the way in, but that last 1/4 is too hard. Any tips? The caliper pads on the rear passenger side were so worn out that the pistol was pushing metal to metal basically... could this have influenced to my dilemma?

Make sure you are turning counter clockwise. If it will not depress all the way... then you may have a bad Caliper... needing replaced... it should depress as easy as the driverside the turn opposite directions though... if not you may need to replace that capliper...
