The haunting theme of the 2nd movement is taken from the ill-fated violin concerto from 1908, which has recently materialized after having been believed lost for nearly100 years!
It was a great honor to be asked to prepare the new piano score (the original was lost), and thus contribute to the work's successful revival, which I also witnessed, at the Risør festival in 2016.
Enjoyed this Symphony, especially movements III and IV, for their energy and orchestral color !! Halvorsen's harmonic language here seems to be "Romantic" / "Impressionist."
It's very colourful in its treatment of the orchestra. I think it's purely Romantic in its musical language, and it's quite far removed from Debussy or Ravel. However, I do hear some resemblance to the symphonies of the late French Romantic composers Lalo and Franck, particularly in its orchestral scoring

How can he manage to accomlish this masterwork in such poor conditions as Norway back in the 1920'ies? I really don't understand this at all. Maybe a brighter future will come and appreciate this beautiful work.

This is the most dramatic of the three Halvorsen symphonies, and the most "Norwegian". It's the symphony that Grieg wished he could have written.

The scherzo is Lento - Allegro con spirito.
The final movement is Introduction and Rondo: Andante - Allegro deciso.
All the movements are varied in tempo, usu. with a slow intro

This is spectacular. Yes, I'll stick with spectacular.
It's powerful, and exudes Nordic drama and energy in every bar. Shades of a Viking raid back in the Middle Ages.
Un'altro brillante compositore norvegese (con Alnaes,etc)ignobilmente ignorato sull'altare di Grieg .
Ho capito.E' troppo sorpassata,troppo post Romantica per il 1923 .E con questo ? Quello che conta,per me ,è sempre ascoltare dell' ottima musica e questa sinfonia ne è un esempio.
