Halvorsen was known to have said that he pretty much did not care about present or future critical responses to his symphonies. He was pretty much retired and could feel free to do what he wanted, finally. So he wrote what he liked. He had had a long career as a conductor and was familiar with the modern currents in music. He just didn't want to write along those lines. No more than Rachmaninoff and many other great composers did. I'm glad! This is great music. And it is good thing that his music is being rediscovered, thanks to Neeme Jarvi and other broad-minded conductors.

    Fun fact:
When Sergei Rachmaninoff left Russia due to the turmoil of the revolution, he eventually came to Norway to perform his piano concerto no.2 at Nationaltheatret in Kristiania (what Oslo was called at the time) in april of 1918. However, half the orchestral score was lost during his travel. So, for two days and nights Sergei and Johan Halvorsen (whom was also conducting the concert), worked tirelessly to reconstruct the score in time for the show.

    Ottimo inserimento.

Halvorsen sounds like my kind of guy -- the type that isn't interested in some dilettante critic's opinion, and who doesn’t care if he achieves the accolade of a listing in the index of a music appreciation textbook. He wrote what he felt like writing, without feeling compelled to invent something new. Vive Halvorsen.

Trentadue Domenico.

Very approachable and easy to enjoy, but I'm amazed it was written as late as 1924. Has a Brahms/Bruckner feel of 40 years beforehand. I wonder what Halvorsen would have thought about Ives, Schoenberg, Bartok et al who were his 20s contemporaries..

Lovely stuff - most enjoyable! I guess if this symphony had been written in 1884 instead of 1924, it would have had more credibility and achieved much more traction than it has done.
