Rachmaninoff simply was not of this world. To have this gift, bestowed from our benevolent God who so loved the world, and to be able to beckon his work products when and where needed, is one of the greatest bestowments known to mankind (or at least me). The adagio of his 3rd piano concerto brings memories of tragedy, joy, triumph and gratitude all at the same time.. I could survive without many things, but the absence of Rach's work products is not one of them.
let me just say that from the cosmic point of view (not the psychological point of view) I exist because you exist and you exist because I exist; and R. exists because you exist and you exist because R exists. It is our cosmic mutuality. I see what you're saying.

@@Irina-b.korovkaof course he's serious. He's correct. If Russia can claim Pushkin who was part African, the USA can, along with Russia, claim Rachmaninov: because he did truly take American citizenship. The flute begins interweaving with the piano at 0:44 (the flute so beautifully played btw!), then at 1:01 the flute morphs seamlessly into a clarinet. The clarinet hands it back to the flute at 1:54, then at 2:02 the flute gives it back to the clarinet, but this time the melody is transferred to the piano with the clarinet doing the accompanying work. Love how Rachmaninoff did all of this!
He takes us on a flight to unimaginable worlds where life, though cruel and sad at times, still makes sense. We pass majestic mountains, quiet streams, gently singing maidens, and the sounds of life and nature at work. Above all, there is brooding, quiet, but powerful love in these notes. Rachmaninoff was a master of medley, of tremendous tonal beauty, and unforgettable vistas of life. Unforgettable! His 2nd symphony Adagio alone was enough to win me over as a tenth grade high school student in the '60s. I told myself, "That's what I feel but don't know how to say." I still don't, but what a world he opened up to me! One wonderful composer led to another -- from Elgar to Tchaikovsky, to the Stanfords, Brahms, Thompsons, Hansons ... thank God for these geniuses.
So intimate beautiful is his personal feeling in his compositions. Rachmaninov had a lot of depressions, aching for his homeland and beloved family and teachers. Sadly with the first WW he had to leave his homeland and moved to America with his wife and children. He still had to learn English and had besides performing for making a living, also carried on his composing. He composed his 4th piano concerto and played it for the first time in America. It wasn't received very well by the public. It's a shame really because his 4th is a treasure. The immense sadness portrayed in this composition is bafling. I love it enormous and like playing it. Every composer gives their innermost feeling in their compositions. That's why I love Tchaikovsky so much too......

Did you know that Rachmaninoff himself suffered from periods of acute depression, including a 4-month period prior to writing the second Piano Concerto. When he was finally able to complete it, he dedicated his Piano Concerto # 2 to his doctor, Nicolai Dahl. (too bad his music is almost impossible to play, especially for someone with hands as small as mine. Rachmaninoff was 6-feet, 6 inches tall and had enormous hands - it is thought that he had Marfan's syndrome which exhibits traits such as extreme height and long fingers, including double-jointedness.

I totally agree with you

In Rachmaninoff's work I feel like I'm dreaming of a better, more beautiful Earth from the abyss of some distant, dismal world.

Born Russian but an American citizen we can claim him also. Blessing both countries ❤
@@Yuppie.Mike.
@@Irina-b.korovkaof course he's serious. He's correct. If Russia can claim Pushkin who was part African, the USA can, along with Russia, claim Rachmaninov: because he did truly take American citizenship.
And even though these also are American citizens, Russia could claim them because they were born there:
Irving Berlin, Isaac Asimov, and Sergei Brin.

So true.
