    One thing to remember is that a lot of key locks don't allow you to put your key in from the outside if there is a key already in on the inside. So if it fails for what ever reason, you'll be locked out.

    Okay I have a question. So the door automatically locks and unlocks depending on what you tell it to do, but you can still use your old key to get into the house. It's not like the smart lock keeps the deadbolt in place regardless of if there's a key. So what is stopping someone from just picking the lock or stealing a key (I know that's less likely but my neighbor somehow had hers stolen or copied) and getting in anyways? Isn't this supposed to keep your home safer than before by not allowing the door to unlock unless you say so? I see nothing stopping anyone from breaking in. I'm genuinely interested in this product and I don't want to buy it and my place still gets broken into

  • @domramsey

    Surely if you're using it with a lock with a key, you're not also going to be able to use a key in the lock from the outside of the door? That would mean a fairly high chance of getting locked out when the batteries die?

  • @BigBenAdv
    @BigBenAdv ปีที่แล้ว

    Glad to have found this video.. I was looking to purchase this previously on launch but had held off because it didn't originally come with the cylinder knob adapter and had compatiblity issues with the stock unit on my lock (round knob). One other person with the same issue removed the knob and put a long M2.5 screw through the lock shaft as a level to make it work but that's an ugly hack.
    The switchbot makes sense for us here due to new regulations requiring fire rated main doors so fitting an electronic mortise set is technically illegal if you have to cut new holes in the door - the alternative is to replace with a new fire rated door cut for the electronic mortise lockset ~US$700+ at the least for the door.
    Electronic locksets also need to be certified to be both able to act as firestop and to automatically unlock when detecting high temperatures to ease escape unless there's a manual knob override.
    Using the switchbot lock would allow us to skirt this since the original lockset is still in place and the door installation will meet regulations - we would just be adding a smart 'hand' to turn the knob.

    thanks for the video, I have a question though, is it possible when unlocking the door, to keep open in a way I just have to push it from outside the door ? I'm asking that cause from out side my door I cannot open with the doot handle, I need a key, I can use the door hanlde only from inside, so basically I need a key everytime I need to open the door from outside.
    So it its possible to keep the door open when using the switchbot app to unlock then its good for me

    I have mine added to home assistant via smartthings integration… I’ve included a guide into that thread about the lock API not working anymore.
    It is also possible to include it into home assistant using webhooks+api using something like nodered. The main problem with this approach is the 10k api requests per day…
    Guys from homebridge also added this lock using the api method… it can also be included into HA via homekit integration. ;)

    I was able to integrate mine in HomeKit through a HomeBridge plugin, thanks to the recently released V1.1 web API and donavabecker‘s amazing work - in case anybody here is interested
    That being said, i‘m looking forward to a future Home Assistant integration too (i guess that shouldn‘t be too hard after the BLE API is updated as well)
    Being able to control this locally would be awesome, as the web API introduces delays and, well, reliance on the web

      and yes, it requires the hub for now, as there is no bleAPI for the Lock yet, so the webAPI is all we have

      It's different I would say. I tried to get one 3 times previously but no joy. Plus they removed features in the new version which isn't so good.
      I'll check them out, if they ever decide to respond!

    Tell switch bot folks to make a sliding glass door version. I would happily test it

      What would you be looking for in that version?

    • @mattschingel2436

      @@EverythingSmartHome I was thinking 2 options.
      Option 1 - replacing the handles (both inside and out) for a clean and matching install. It could be adjustable to fit different doors etc.
      Option 2 - which I wouldn’t prefer but would deal with. A device that mounts above or below the handle that latches onto the lock switch (which slides up and down) and locks it that way.

    • @mattschingel2436
      @mattschingel2436 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never understood why companies hadn’t made this. I understand it wouldn’t work for ever door. But MOST sliding doors have 2 screw for the handle and then the shaft for the lock.

    If anyone is interested, I made an extension for the Switchbot Lock. It lets you use it on locks that have a recessed knob that the normal part can't reach. Made a video about it here: th-cam.com/video/dwaqqWMg-p8/w-d-xo.html
