I saw them in late 1984 or early 1985 in Goose Creek, South Carolina (outside of Charleston), in a nightclub setting, and they were outstanding. I think they had recently released their Perspectives album, which was a good album for a band like them coming to maturity in the context of the music of the mid 80s. I liked Cinderella, Special Girl, and a few other songs from that album. They left a guitar string on the stage, and I picked it up. I meant to keep it as a souvenir, but I think I inadvertently used it to string one of my guitars. 😊

The band America is forever associated with road trips in my mind thanks to a camping trip I took when I was 10 or so; my half-brother's dad took the two of us up to the upper peninsula of Michigan for a week-long camping trip with his family, and on both the drive up and while we were driving around there, one of the albums he played multiple times was America's greatest hits. Before he was taken away to the funeral home, my mother discovered a song and played it next to him on repeat, because the words meant so much to her. It described everything going on, and how selfless of a man he was. It’s a song called “Just Breathe” by Pearl Jam. It made us all cry. We were truly blessed to have him. Dan Peek was one of my favorite voices - he left the band when he became a born again Christian and became a Christian Contemporary music artist. He still sang the song, Lonely People. He passed away in 2011 at the age of 60, due to heart disease. So young - very sad.

The very first song I learned on guitar back around 1980 (age 12)! In hindsight, lots of chords for a beginner, my teacher should have picked an easier song for an absolute beginner, but I realize now he was just teaching me songs that he knew! I would recommend “Magic” as your next America reaction.
