This was back in the day when you could hear Frank Sinatra, Led Zeppelin, and Stevie Wonder all on the same radio station. Music was music, but it was awesome!

That wuz one of my favorite songs in Honolulu, Hawaii. I wuz in Intermediate school 7th grade. We only had 3 T.V. channels at that time non of this 500 channels. We were catching our T.V. signals from the air. No cable.
Growing up in Canada in the 70s and 80s, this song was simply part of my life, always playing somewhere. And yes, lots of cowboys out in the Canadian west 😀
Oh how this takes me back to the summer of 71, I was 15 and after begging my parents for a horse for years they finally broke down and bought me one. I used to take a little transistor radio with me when I would go riding and this song was always on the radio. It always reminds me of my horse who's name was Shadow. So glad you guys liked this song so much!!❤
From my home city! Yes we definitely have cowboys in Calgary - ever heard of the Calgary Stampede? 😁 Wild Eyes is another great tune from them, much different from this one, definitely a rocker, drummer sings that one (I had a huge crush on him). Also if you want more great Canadian banjo, check out The Dead South - very different but incredibly talented group of musicians.
I grew up in northern Ontario and we only saw Canadian bands since they were the only bands who toured that far north. The Stampeders were one of them, along with April Wine, Lighthouse, BTO and I got to see early Rush - pre- Neal Peart - when they played my high school. The Stampeders had a good run.
The second you hear the banjo, you know you're in for a groovy trip. When I was 5 years old, I loved listening to this song on my little transistor radio while living in Monterey, California in 1971.
Cowboys are alive and well in western Canada. These guys hail from Calgary, home of the Calgary Stampede, billed as the greatest outdoor show on earth. I grew up to this tune. Not sure how extensive their catalogue is.
Released in '71. I was 20 and my little blonde bride was 20 and we were loving life. Its been many years since I heard this song. Thanks for the memories you brought to me here 50 years later
The Stampeders are from Calgary a city known by the nicknames "Stampede City" "Heart of the New West" and "Cowtown". The Band is named after the world famous annual ten day festival and rodeo the Calgary Stampede that is held every July. The Festival contains one of the countries largest music festivals, a midway, and agricultural showcase and is the second largest festival by annular draw in Canada after the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto.
"They have cowboys in Canada ?" My keyboard holds at least one mouthful of coffee !! LOL ! Thank you for the first real belly laugh I've had in some time. ❤. Us Canucks have cowboys and some great tunes. Not sure if you've reacted to this one, but one that takes me back is "When I'm With You" by Sheriff. Another 🇨🇦 group. Again, thank you !!
How about cowboys and songs together, such as Ian Tyson. Also in the "Western" motif were kd Lang and the Reclines and a favourite group of mine The Razorbacks.
Actually the Cowboys tried invading Canada but the Canadians stopped them dead at the Montana border. All the while the Cowboys were screaming " Yipee-Kai-Yea" while the Canadians were yelling "Eh!!".
Back in '71, my last year in the military, I was in the D.C. area, and a couple friends and I used to drive around with the top down on one friend's little sports car and we'd sing along loudly to this song. It's definitely a feel good fun song.
With the Stampeders, you should definitely listen to "Carry Me", "Wild Eyes", & their versions of "Hit The Road, Jack" and "New Orleans". Another Canadian group that you probably will both like is Lighthouse. They had several hits, but their best were "Sunny Days" and "One Fine Morning" (with honourable mention going to "Hats Off To The Stranger", Little Kind Words", "Take It Slow" & "Pretty Lady").
And one of the former members of Lighthouse, Howard Shore, now writes movie scores. He wrote the score to a little series of movies they may have heard of called The Lord of The Rings.
Sweet City Woman is a song about the allure of the big city and the excitement of starting a new life. The catchy tune, infectious chorus, and relatable lyrics have made it a timeless classic. The Stampeders’ tight harmonies and energetic live performances solidified their place in Canadian music history. Sweet City Woman will continue to be a staple in Canadian music for years to come.
Lol of course we've got cowboys in Canada, we have three main prairie provinces ( which are HUGE ). I come from Calgary Alberta, Calgary is known as cow town - cowboys, the Calgary Stampede, etc.
This is the only “rock” song by a rock group that I can ever remember that featured a banjo as the main instrument. Great song and one of my and my wife’s favorites. Thank you for reacting to it.❤
Saw these guys twice at my High School dances - when live bands were the norm and it still kills me that a band with a massive charting hit just played there like it was normal.
I heard this song for the first time, in New Brunswick, when we were driving from Massachusetts to Prince Edward Island in the Summer of 1971. I was 6 years old, and instantly fell in love with it. I heard it several more times while we were in Canada, and here and there when we got back home. Radio could be frustrating when your favorite songs weren't in heavy rotation.
