Crackling Rose' was an inexpensive wine of the era.
Yup, I remember it being my older sister's favorite. And we indulged sometimes as teenagers because it was cheap 😁
Just what I was going to say!! Great minds!! LOL!
This would be a good companion song to "Red Red Wine".
Amber nailed it with the liquid courage:
The one that stuck with him was about a reservation where men outnumbered women. Over the weekend, “these poor chaps would rush down to their local general store and get themselves a large bottle of a very cheap wine called Crackling Rose. The story goes that the wine becomes their woman for the weekend.
I guess "Malt Duck" wouldn't have been as popular. But think of the rhyming opportunities!
This was one of the first 45’s I bought with my own money (about 75 cents back then), so it holds a special place to me.
My favorite song of his is SOLITARY MAN. It’s a very special song.
You're not alone. It strikes a chord deep inside me
It's a top tune from him. Maybe his best.
Mine too!!
Love this one too!
Chris Isaak does a version, Solitary Man, that is awesome as well.
"Holly Holy" is my favorite Neil song. It just SOARS. "Forever in Blue Jeans" is also tremendous.
Totally agree
The live version from Hot August Night is IMO his absolute BEST song.
yup, when he belts out "Yeah". Still stirs me.
@@idalily3810 Damn straight! 🤘😎
Holly Holy the GOAT
I love Neil Diamond! One of his best + “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show!!” 🎶❤
Great song!
Great suggestion.
@@kbusby4824 thank you
Absolutely, and Cherry Cherry.
Yep, You folks have to listen to 'Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show' - one of his best!
My Dad's favorite. Buried him while this song was playing.
“SWEET CAROLINE “
Is his most famous song, it’s almost like his theme song!!
There’s even a baseball team that adopted this song as theirs and the whole crowd sings it!!
Yes please!😊
Very popular fight song for English soccer.
One of my favorites
He wrote it to pay hommage to Caroline Kennedy. Also he wrote Daydream Believer and I'm A Believer and his breakthrough hit was Cherry Cherry. If you can listen to it.
Sweet Caroline has become an audience participation song....crowds love it and join in!
Cracklin' Rosie" is a bottle of wine. Diamond got the idea for the song from a folk story of an Indian tribe in Northern Canada who had more men than women. He told David Wild at Rolling Stone: "On Saturday nights when they go out, the guys all get their girl; the guys without girls get a bottle of Cracklin' Rosé, that's their girl for the weekend."
You nailed it! I heard Neil share that in an interview many years ago. BTW cheap not great rose’ but there was limited good affordable wine back than. 😅
“Cracklin Rosie “ he said is about a bottle of wine, I think he saw the name on a bottle of wine and wrote a song about it!
He is a great story telling song writer.
Yeah I bet he thought it tasted good also lol
more to it. Something about the men/ women ratio somewhere up north. Guys without a date cuddled up with Cracklin Rose.
Plus his mother was Rose.
Ok, if he said it in an interview, then my take is wrong... because since it came out I took it for what it was; he was hooking up with a hooker for an hour!
@@mgass1354 Always my take as well.
He does a great cover of Mr. Bojangles.
Jay/Amber, you'll love his "Sweet Caroline", "Song Sung Blue" and "Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show" !!!
Song sung blue is an absolute favourite of mine
“Forever In Blue Jeans”
Neil Diamond wrote 4 songs for The Monkees. " I'm A Believer", " A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You", " Lookout Here Comes Tomorrow", and " Love to Love *. " Crackling Rosie" was released in August of 1970. The song topped the charts in October of that year.
Lookout is one of my favorite Monkees songs. The Porpoise Song is my other.
His Monkees songs definitely have the ND imprint.
It's like they're covering his songs...
OMG those are my favorite, I forgot Neil wrote those! Thank you for mentioning that! 👍
@@BrenSned Wow, I agree with you on both.
I knew his parents. They had a dry goods store on Brighton Beach Avenue in Brooklyn. My mom bought her undergarments there. Neil’s mom ROSE loved me when I was a little kid in the 60s
Going to a Neil Diamond concert is a giant sing-a-long. All ages and everyone knowing all the songs. It’s a phenomenon.
It's sort of the same groove as Jimmy Buffett used to be. Everyone knows the songs by heart
More Neil Diamond, the greatest singer song writer of all.
One of my favorites from him.
Y'all need to try Forever in Bluejeans. One of my favorite Neal Diamond songs.
Neil Diamond live, in concert is phenomenal. He could hold an audience like few performers I’ve seen. He owns the stage and the audience. Love his music and his voice.
I got to see him in concert. My boyfriend took his Mom and myself. In my early 20's it was a Christmas present. My mom was so jealous 😅
One of the best concerts I've ever seen. He is a consummate performer. Amazing.
mom and dad used to crank the neil diamond up on the 8 track as we traveled to and fro his duty assignments in the u.s.a.. he was a usaf pilot. anywho...... the first opportunity i, as an adult, had to see him live, i could not afford the price. oh the regrets over that miss. then he toured again later in my life and the price doubled. it's crazy to me that performers outprice themselves so much so that humble fans cannot attend. just sayin'.
Check out the studio version of "Soolaimon".
It was one of my mother's favorite Neil Diamond songs, and it has a very lovely female vocal, sung by a wonderful young lady named Christine. She was a high school senior when she sang it.
I’d love to read about the woman who sang the soprano part in Sooliamon! Where is the story?
@@geohaber I don't think the story has ever been written. She was my high school music teacher in the early 80's.
I believe the choir backing vocals was her high school's choir, and she was chosen to do the solo. She was a high school senior at the time.
When she was teaching at my high school, she always sang the National Anthem at the football games, and I don't think I've ever heard it done better.
Her students knew her as "Miss V". 🎶💕
@@geohaber The odd thing is that when she told us about singing on a Neil Diamond song, she played it for us on a terrible sounding recorder, and it was probably a recording of her album playing on some mediocre "record player", so you could barely hear her part... so I brushed the whole thing off as not worthy of her talent, and didn't even remember what the song was called... 🙄
30 years later, a friend had copied some stuff to my MP3 player, and I saw that one of the albums was Neil's "Greatest Hits". Although I didn't listen to his music at the time, I decided to see what was on the album just for the heck of it, as I was commuting to work.
When it got to "Soolaimon", I was impressed with the dynamic nature of the song. When it got to the female solo, I thought "Wow, that's really beautiful"... there was something familiar and "comforting" about the sound and the flow of it...
After listening to it several more times during my work commutes, it suddenly hit me... "It's Miss V!!" 🤯
Hearing it on a modern stereo revealed its subtlety, and its sublime beauty. 🎶💕
LOVE ON THE ROCKS ISCA GREAT SOLO NEIL DIAMOND 💎 SONG 🎵
Neil Diamond has a great catalog of music, my absolute favorite is “Solitary Man”……should give it a listen.
"Don't know if I will but until I can find me,
a girl who'll stay and won't, play games behind me.
I'll be what I am. A solitary man. Solitary man.
Crackling Rosie, Sweet Caroline, and Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show all classic '70's Neil. Brings back so many memories.
“You’re A store bought woman”. She’s a bottle of wine. We’re gonna ride till there ain’t no more to go, taking it slow. Great double entendre, writing, legendary, songwriter, singer.
You should do Cherry Cherry by Neil Diamond next. And please do Run to Me by the Bee Gees. Love you guys.
Hell Yeah and The Story of My Life are two under appreciated songs, but they are touching songs that reflect on his devotion to his love and no regrets how he has lived his life. Perfect sampling of his fantastic writing,as well as singing works!🔥❤️💎
How can you not love this song?
It’s so good!!!
Neil has a live album “Hot August Night” with great versions of some of his best songs including “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show”, “Holly Holy”, “Shilo”, “Red, Red, Wine” “Play Me”. All good choices
It’s one of those albums that is widely regarded as an absolute classic. Even without the visuals you can tell why his concerts were legendary.
Play Me is so awesome! If they liked Iam I Said, I'm sure they will love it!
My sister wore out the needle to record player playing Hot August Night
My brother had this album and we never took it off the turntable. Brilliant live album!
I love Shiloh!
Sweet Caroline is his signature song.
"Brother Love's Travelin Salvation Show", and "Kentucky Woman" are two of my favs!! I love Neil Diamond, I was almost dizzy seeing him in concert! He was SEXY!
I love this song. My favorite for sure. So cool.
Neil Diamond has a voice that sends me to a certain place when I was 10 years old. A safe and happy place. Song Sung Blue was my favourite. Love your reactions. ❤
Yes! Someone else mentioned it in one of the replies but I’ve been surprised that no one else has. It was huge back in the day! And watching these ND reaction videos I’ve often thought of that line, “Funny thing, but you can sing it with a cry in your voice.” I never really thought about it before but he definitely sings with a cry in his voice. Part of that unique Neil Diamond style.
Neil Diamond was one of the most sought after song writers in the 60's, then one day he stopped writing for others and started doing his own songs. He stated in an interview he just got tired of writing for others and then they did not sing his songs as he had written them. The Monkee's did a great version of his song, "I'm a Believer". The wife and I saw Diamond in concert (in Tulsa) back in the mid-70's. Ninety minutes without a break with no intro band to warm audience.
IMO, 'Hot August Night' is his best album.
singer, song writer, legend
If you haven’t checked out Neil’s movie it’s called The Jazz Singer. You will be in for a treat
Neil DIamond is the ultimate sing-a-long artist. Not many songs of his that people just don't want to crank up and sing when in the car.
🙂 "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" is a great Neil Diamond song (studio version please). Thank you.
This was my favorite song that year. Sure makes me think of my parents. Miss them both every day
I miss mine as well. When we are young we have so much time, but time has a way of creeping up on us. I always thought when I was younger that our family was immune to what was the inevitable - we weren't.. ..none of us are. The memories are the gifts we hold forever. ✌❤
Forever in Blue Jeans! Ya!❤❤
Neil is a deep, DEEP rabbit hole to dive into. I would strongly recommend: "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" (With Amber having grown in rural Georgia, I think she would absolutely LOVE that one), "Solitary Man" and "Sweet Caroline"
Fun story… Neil at first wanted to be a Doctor.. for Money he wrote Jingles…
My friends Dad was a Doctor who absolutely loved Neil!!!!
I was fortunate to see Neil in ‘08!! He was great and so sweet!!! I can’t remember what happened that year. But, all the proceeds to his concerts went to a charity…
Great man and singer!!!
Sweet Caroline is a College team's football anthem before the 4th quarter, like Jump Around is WISCONSIN BADGERS Anthem!
Love Neil. For me his best was LONGFELLOW SERENADE. Beautiful song.
LOVE ON THE ROCKS IS A GREAT SOLO NEIL DIAMOND 💎 SONG 🎵
Don’t be afraid to delve into Neil’s Christmas songs when the season is here. He did a Christmas performance at the White House two years when the Obamas were in office! He sang with two choirs and he was ahhhhmazng!
My mother loved Neil Diamond, I heard this over and over when I was younger
Mine too! Same! "Shilo when I was young, I used to call your name..."
sunday chore music lol
Same!
Same here! We even had his song, Song Sung Blue played at her funeral. Everyone sang along. Sweet moment!!!
@@karencolley-smidt864 I keep waiting for someone to mention Song Sung Blue! To me it’s always been up there with Cracklin’ Rosie and Sweet Caroline. I don’t know if they were on the same album but I think they were all some of the earliest Neil Diamond songs I knew.
What a special way to remember your mom! A feeling of community and a momentary respite from grief on what I’m sure was a very tough day.
Good timing! My mom recently introduced me to this song and I love it.
I remember having this on a 45 record. Played it over and over. From the generation that remembers putting the plastic ‘spider’ in the center of 45s.
Here’s a fun fact for you : did you know screech from saved by the bell and Mike D from the beastie boys are Neil Diamond‘s kids .
"Cracklin' Rosie" was a cheap brand of rose wine that was popular with the composer.
That man's got a damn fine smooth voice.
Neil has one of the most unique and recognizable voices.
Definitely classy and a show man. I know how much you love songs with an air of nostalgia. You really need to react to "If You Know What I Mean." Such a beautiful song. Can you hear it babe?
Neil Diamond could sing the phone book and make it sound good. Such a rich and totally unique voice.
Also, Neil Diamond was a hit music making machine back in the day. For himself and others.
Neil Diamond - Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show
Neil Diamond had/has a great voice and interesting intonations. He had a lot of songs that sound emotionally deep.
My favorite song from this album is Soolaimon. It’s very different and I would love to see you react to it.
This is a song that I thought everyone knew. Played at all sports events and stadiums - everyone sings...At least everyone over 45.
Saw Neil back in the day the dude has such a catalog of songs. Left the concert with a smile on my face. Neil just makes u feel good
One of the truly great singers.
This is my favorite Neil diamond song just fell in love first time I seen this video 🥵🔥😍
I've loved Neil all my life. I'm nearly 60 yrs old now and to see younger generations listening to his priceless music....is in itself PRICELESS !! BTW It's liquor :)
Neil Diamond is a legend. Beautiful voice! So talented! ❤❤
Ya'll need to react to SAVING SILVERMAN for movie night.
With Jack Black, Steve Zahn and Jason ? (forgetting last name) it features Neil Diamond's music (with Neil himself showing up in the movie), it's truly a hoot! It's just what you need after the intensity of PSYCHO. ✌
His first big hit was from the 60's. "Cherry Cherry" Great song. A favorite from my teen years.
‘I Am I Said’, ‘Shilo’, and ‘Play Me’ are my favorite Neil Diamond songs…
My daughter is Shiloh ❤️
Me and my wife just started dating when the song came out.We have now been married 51 years!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Congratulations to you and your wife Gary! That’s AMAZING! One of our couples at church are celebrating 60 years marriage! My husband and I will have been married 37 years this September! Peace and Blessings to you and your wife from Australia.
That's Awesome!! The wine has kept y'all together all these years! Lol, get it? Congratulations to you both!!👍✌️
Neil does a song called Tennessee Moon!
His voice is so unique!
LOVE ON THE ROCKS LIVE PERFORMANCE IS A REALLY GREAT NEIL DIAMOND 💎 SONG 🎵 👌
Classic warning…one of his best
Glory Road,Tennessee Moon,Play Me….forever an amazing singer,songwriter and actors,
His first big Number One from 1970. He had others, but this was his first. Like Rob, I love that part where he sings down low. Always gives me chills. Give his earlier stuff a try. "Cherry, Cherry", "I've Got the Feeling (No, No, No)", "Solitary Man"...these are great songs. This was another one that I rode around on my bike with my radio on the handlebar. Great memory!
He can sing tenor notes, but
Neil is a baritone, so of course he is going to sing a lot of low notes.
He has so much voice control, and he makes everything about it look so effortless. He will always be a legend!!
One if not my favorite Neil Diamond songs.
You could be there for a long time lining up the so many wonderful songs from this magnificent singer/songwriter named Neil Diamond. Wonderful, wonderful man. He is battling Parkinson's Disease at the moment and I send my prayers to him constantly which I am sure so many other fans do too. God bless Neil!
Neil had a unique voice, it took me YEARS to get used to it.
Saw him in concert here in Dublin twice. The man could hold an entire audience in the palm of his hand. He's absolutely huge in Ireland
A reaction that everyone is missing is the version of Holly Holy from Hot August Night álbum - 1972. It was already a famous song by then, I would say his best but that version was a thriller. Unforgettable
My stepdad passed away five years ago. Neil Diamond was his favorite. He married my mom when I was two so in reality, he raised me. He taught me right from wrong. He taught me chivalry, honesty, and integrity. He was a good man. I am tearing up listening to this and missing him.
She is fine wine, He composed for many people he wrote songs for the Monkees IM a believer, First song of his I heard was Solitary man, great song,
Neil Diamond is a treasure, such an amazing singer writer.
Went to see Neil Diamond in concert at the Capital Center (long since gone) many years ago in the DC area. The arena was completely encircled in limos. One of the best concerts I ever saw. He is the consummate showman. Totally agree with Marlene's comment below.
Thanks guys, my favorite Neil Diamond song. I’ve been singing it since I’m three years old.
It is Phil Donahue's favorite too. I remember the huge smile on Donahue's face when he had Neil on his show and Neil played it for him in person.
Forever in blue jeans👍
I love Neil Diamond! And more than that, his backup singers! Glad you are listening to this one, its a classic!
Yeah, Cracklin' Rose *_IS_* about wine, which *_IS_* why "she's a store bought woman" and lasts for "an hour", and "a dream that asks no questions". Amber, you hit the nail on the head.
He gives me goose bumps. I'm smitten. ❤❤❤❤❤
"Do It", "The Boat That I Row", "Shilo", "Brooklyn Roads", "Play Me", "Songs of Life", "Holly Holy" are all excellent. You can also get a megadose of Neil as he starred in the remake of the movie "The Jazz Singer"...
Brooklyn Road 👍
Amazing! Amber nails it again on the first listen! Yes, the 'store bought woman" is a bottle of whatever. I'd love to see your reaction to Kid by The Pretenders
“Holly Holy.” Live version in the 70s (sorry, no suit, he’s wearing a red shirt). He really lets go in this performance.
Amber absolutely nailed it! It's not a woman, it's a wine! Way to pick up what Neil was putting down, Amber!
"Play Me" makes me weep openly. I was raised on Neil's music, and have seen him many many times, including a few back-to-back concerts at Madison Square. My best birthday gift was front row, center seats in the LA Greek Theater for his "Hot August Night" anniversary tour in 2012, exactly 40 years to the weekend he recorded that album. Neil played the entire album. I cried, sang, and smiled to the point my heart exploded with joy. And love. His music is the score of my childhood, and remains imbedded in my heart... forever. If you get the chance to see "Beautiful Noise" on B'Way, it's a mini-concert that tells his life story through his songs, up to and including the tragic diagnosis of MS.
One of the most beautiful songs with a great acoustic guitar and violins.
He put on the best Christmas concert I've ever heard!!
He was one of my most favorite! Play Me was always a favorite of mine. I saw him in concert 40 years ago and I have never seen a performer energize and mesmerize an audience the way he did.
Cool that you chose a version of him performing the song, vs. a music video; "...not that there's anything wrong with that."
The interesting thing about this reaction is that Jay said that it was a "slow" side of Neil Diamond for him.... yet he liked I am I said and You don't bring me flowers.... those were SLOW... I think Cracklin Rosie was one of his more upbeat ones. My personal favorite!
I am now 55. When I was in grade school, this was my absolute, number one favorite song, for reasons that I will never understand, and I am still a big Neil Diamond fan. This brings back so many memories. Great reaction! Love your channel. Keep up the good work!
I was so lucky to see him twice in concert. There was no better. He had such energy and sparkling presence on stage it was mesmerizing. You should was the movie Jazz Singer that he was in. You may recognize some of the songs he sings in the movie.
Love me some Neil Diamond…from rugged to regal! Love it all!🔥❤️💎
Yeah, this is definitely one of Neil's big hits. Haven't heard this in a while. Cheers to everyone who suggested it.
