This overwhelming nostalgia and positivity was there when the team brought them back as a throwback a couple years ago, too. fr lakers wearing gold on the road and purple at home makes me sick. and the Lakers purple jerseys in the LeBron era have been horrible, every single one. the purple, yellow and black ones with the pinstripes, and the ones they have now that are purple with black number blocks and side stripes. Lakers should wear gold or white at home and purple and gold accents (no black) on the road. I do actually like when Lakers wear black jerseys like the mamba ones, the Hollywood nights or the ones from last year but not when they are the purple ones with black, just the mostly black with gold/purple or both
It's funny to see Gen Z call 90s designs beloved now. I remember when people hated those jerseys back in the day and called the Rockets, Raptors or Hawks jerseys "pyjamas" and wanted the return of more classic or plain designs. You would never see rap stars in those jerseys - Bulls, Lakers, Heat, Hornets or Celtics were much more popular and they were extremely traditional. That's how we got the beloved Raptors redesign in 2000, Hawks soon after and Rockets as well (although they changed it to the Chinese design which also wasn't liked but it was considered an improvement nonetheless)
I think the best way to bring them back to great uniforms is thru blending together properly. A throwback design with some modern tones to it. Example is Utah: bring back the 90’s look but make the color from the mountains up a purple gradient into black, make the font classic but modernize clean. This makes every part of the jersey pop out
those teal pistons jersey and that logo was great and much better than their boring logo now. i essentially like the hybrid horse logo with the current red, blue and white color scheme from like 2002 or 2003
i believe the Jazz had a rebrand in two step - first temporary minimalist jerseys so they have time to refine the purple/retro jerseys. I remember the agency that worked on it shared the purple jersey when the new brand was launched

Adidas/Reebok hands down made the best NBA jerseys. Nike came around and ruined the NBA jerseys with poor quality and quantity. I'm still very angry that, the NBA re-signed with Nike for another 12 years!!! I hope there is a opt-out clause after x amount of years.
Sucks that Hawks never had an earned jerseys but the only city jersey i liked was the Hawks peach jerseys because it represents not just the city of Atlanta but the state of Georgia
nba's biggest mistake of accessing more money than they currently making is that they should recognize and keep things that fans love such as loose jersey court designs trendy celebrations etc etc but these jersey and the preseason court must stay in the nba it makes the games looks cooler and is more watchable even to non basketball fans
I grew up in the era of 90s jerseys and the nostalgia is strong for them. Nike makes too many jerseys. I am fine with minimalist modern Jersey, but why do I need color schemes that make no sense for the team?
This is a well thought-of, well written video. Great job! I'm a long time Jazz fan, and yes, those yellow highlighter designs are best erased from memory.
What the point to have Magic in Orange, Blazers and Suns in Turquoise, Celtics in Black, Woves in Purple or Bulls in Green. No identify. The pinacle was the practice lookalike Yellow Jazz uniform
Orlando's orange jerseys were made because Florida is known for oranges. IIRC, Minny's purple jerseys are a tribute to Prince. Celtics have black jerseys bc they needed an alternate, and when did Chicago last wear green? I only remember them wearing it for St Patrick's day.
I one with their minimalism styles. i do not like them, but whatever. I guess all brands are going with this corpo clean designs, but with what i got a massive issue is with mess up with the colors of the franchises. Like. Before Nike you can turn on the TV and you instantly knew who were playing and where they were playing. White for local, color for visitors and you can instantly associate which team is from which city with their colors. Power blue: Denver Blue and Orange: Knicks Red on Black: Portland Black on red: Chicago Red on Blue: Detroit Blue and Yellow: Pacers Purple and Black: Kings And so much more. You didn't even knew to listen to the broadcast to visually identify which teams were playing the game, but know is goddamn impossible to do that because we teams wearing color that are nowhere near to the colors or identity of the colors. We got Dallas wearing solid green and not accent green???. Orlando wearing orange and black???? Jazz running a color scheme that is pretty much the old pacers????,Cleaveland using powder blue? Bulls wearing white and other color that isn't red? Those ugly ass SAS blue or green or whatever that color was,, Detroit wearing damn green????. Way too many teams got a black color jersey too. Is like NIke walk up and just decided to kick the teams on the balls and yell "your pass? your colors? Don't exist. You rebranding all your teams because we want to" and NBA teams are just forced to say "Ok...NBA is the boss we do what they want". Another issue is that they remake jersey WAAAAAAAAAAAAY TO OFTEN giving them no time to stick with the audiences to get a identity with the team and fanbase either. You can't like a jersey because in 8 months they gonna be throwing it into the trash bin. I prefer the old way Home: Whites Away: Color Alternative Home: White with 3rd color of the team Alternative Visitor: 2nd color Then you got the special day jersey like MLK,Green day, Latino week,Christmas and more special days. Adam Silvers is solo killing this league
My issue with a lot of the teams using minimalist designs are that several of them went to using retro based logos, but they made the colors dull along with simplifying the designs. The cavs coulda easily just went back with the original "wine and gold" design they used for Lebrons rookie year, which had FIRE navy alternates. Or back to the baby blue/black/orange. The nuggets are mixing throwback colors (royal blue, yellow) with the 00s colors (navy, red) while using the rainbow city design. The nets introduced alternates based on the Dr J jerseys but with the bland black and white color scheme instead of just going back to those NY Nets designs but using the NJ colorway (red, navy, gray). What was the point of the raptors just switching their colors to black and red? why get rid of the purple? Even the 6ers went back to a retro based jersey design/colorway. A lot of the teams would do well with just using a slightly modernized retro logo/design and not being scared of having 3-5 colors in the palette. Does anyone remember when the Heat had yellow alternates and instead of adding any other of the teams colors to it, they just made them yellow and black, which made them look like Pacers jerseys? Thats the dumb shit that annoys me. The 75th anniversary city jerseys were some of the best jerseys and I wish some of the teams would just do like the Suns and keep using the same jersey where the design was slightly altered for like 3 years. Most of the city jerseys are uninspired. I remember having a nike rewind jersey and that line used throwback uniforms with the modern colors. That would be way more interesting than what they're doing now. They also need to stop trying to get rid of the idea of the home/away jerseys. Its so dumb watching a home team wear their away jersey and the away team wearing their home. If it aint broke, dont fix it!
Great topic and a very original topic.. at least for me as I have never heard anyone discuss this topic before. Great job. And thanks for speaking proper English.
Nba jerseys have lost all meaning and significance. They dont even wear the proper colors anymore. Some of the city editions jerseys look really cool like miami vice and charlotte hornets. But so many of them are bland, simple, ugly designs When u see a red bulls 23 jersey that ment something. It brings back memories to specific games jordan wore that and won. Also the shitty sponsorship logos make them even worse
I only really started learning about basketball recently and this answered a lot of questions I had about all the different designs I'd seen when I went to all the team's wikipedia pages. Really informative and well done. Now if only they put this much time and effort into any other kind of NBA merch, cause I've looked through their store and it is dire. I will give props to that one Lakers jacket though that for some reason used the Rat Fink art style.
I prefer buying retro jerseys or retro designs over anything of the “current day” look. Having retro designs and players names are timeless. With players moving so often now it’s not worth the investment in current players jerseys
Excellent video, good job sharing all viewpoints and the international aspect. I do hate the over saturation of designs tho. Definitely makes todays crop less iconic and more like product placement than an actual uniform that stands for something
Hey! Thank you for the video. Really enjoyed it 👍🏻 (Just an note, the white association edition ones replaced home and icon edition replaced away jerseys, probably a tiny mistake 😊👍🏻) I’m an 80’s/90’s guy so my childhood was in the mid 90’s and I really miss those times when NBA had 1 home, 1 away and max the third alternate jersey(s) And I’m probably one of the very few people who really misses the all-star games when players wore their team jerseys not all-star uniforms. That way they really represented their teams. Hate that it’s gone Keep up the work man, great stuff 🤜🏻🤛🏻
😂😂😂why do the uniforms look small and tight on basketball players? They don’t look comfortable at all. Then again, do you have to be if you’re shooting 3 pointers and playing no defense?🤣🤣🤣
A big pet peeve of mine with the Nike jerseys is how teams wear their alternates jerseys in the playoffs. I feel like the games feel so much bigger when they just wear their regular home and away uniforms.
The best jersey of all time is the 90s Raptors fits. Those massive logos and loud colors will never not be the best of the best, period. The OG Grizzlies second, then the Sonics, Suns, Pistons and Hawks. The teams who've overall had the worst designs of all time is easily Dallas at #1, and they're followed closely by New Jersey/Brooklyn and the Lakers in my opinion. New Jersey had a horrid color scheme, and the designs were either too minimalist or completely ruined by the color scheme and font. The oversimplified branding definitely doesn't help. Nets. Come on people. The Lakers again it is refusal to go away from their "iconic" exceedingly simple designs, too. And Dallas? Same problem as the latter. Their historic jerseys are ungodly ugly. As for the modern Nike era jerseys that most people hate, but I love, is Utah's Mesa jerseys and Dallas' graffiti looking Mavs jerseys (the blue and electric green ones). LOVE both of those a lot. And for the opposite way around, the current Blazers alts (the normal red alts) are terrible in my opinion. The best of the best was the PDX Carpet City Edition however. I still adore those. That color scheme and the slight pattern of the carpet come together so perfectly. Just *_chef's kiss_* Finally, the Christmas Jerseys (aka, sleeved threads) are abominations and should be nuked with a tsar bomba. If Portland adds a new extra jersey this season, it should be a Bill Walton Tye Dye. A proper brightly colored Bill Walton tye dye shirt color, preferably the same tye dye design we got on our Bill Walton patches this season, using the Retro Blazers font on it from when he played for us. How freaking epic would that look!! That has to be done, even if it is just for fans and merch sales. Give us that jersey, and it'll be the first jersey I'll buy in my life with my own money.
They get a break for the Jazz from me.? They came up with their own, but they wanted to be just black and white. The league stepped in and basically said no more black and white teams, we already have San Antonio and Brooklyn. So they chose to throw in that yellow and go minimalist as FU response. Source: I have a friend that works for them. Trust me. 😂
I’m surprised that you didn’t talk about Nike outsourcing production of many products to Fanatics, which is partly responsible for the quality declining
Very interesting video. I could answer your title without even seeing the video: From the perspective of an old fart, yes. Jerseys were so much more interesting in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. They're cartoonish by the minimalist aesthetic of the 2020s, but I still prefer the 1990s Cavs jerseys to the 2010s ones. Also, wool was because (a) it's a winter sport that was first popular in Canada and cold Northeastern cities and (b) textiles needed to catch up. Synthetics weren't widespread in the first half of the last century. Edit #1 - Also, why is it that so many teams have some shade of blue? There are fewer greens, relatively few reds, and not enough of any other color.
Nah Adidas set the tone for the death of NBA jerseys. They killed the creativity Champion sustained in the 90s jerseys. The adidas jerseys looked like military uniforms and were too similar to each other.
FINALLY somebody said something about this lol I been screaming this for at least 4 years now. Nike has to go, bring back Adidas because Nike is fukkin it up!!!
I agree with you mostly. I like the 4 different jersey’s, I like that teams can experiment more with different logos, designs, and concepts. Some of my fav jerseys of the modern NBA are the Phoenix Suns city jerseys. But it’s definitely become over saturated. If you can’t grab the city jersey the season it’s used, good luck finding one for a reasonable price. I wish there was a 5 year or so, rule to jersey changes to keep things more consistent for franchises, players, and fans.
Its also worth to note why modern graphic design is minimalist: technology. Since a lot of our information arrived to us by technology like smartphones, branding should then be recognizable on a 7" screen. Sometimes even in monochrome. Hence, brands went for a minimal and streamlined look.
I like the new jerseys every year nike just has to do it the right way and keep the ones they hit one like the prince jerseys for Minnesota they should still be wearing that

That's how we got the beloved Raptors redesign in 2000, Hawks soon after and Rockets as well (although they changed it to the Chinese design which also wasn't liked but it was considered an improvement nonetheless)
ironically nike has killed everything we grew
They always try to reinvent the wheel. Some things don't need to be improved
Nike ruins lots of things... They absolutely nuked baseball jerseys, and own entire universities image and looks to boot.
Stop capping
I think the best way to bring them back to great uniforms is thru blending together properly. A throwback design with some modern tones to it. Example is Utah: bring back the 90’s look but make the color from the mountains up a purple gradient into black, make the font classic but modernize clean. This makes every part of the jersey pop out
As a kid in the 80s, i love collecting NBA jerseys. I stop collecting as soon as those 90s abominations came about.
those teal pistons jersey and that logo was great and much better than their boring logo now. i essentially like the hybrid horse logo with the current red, blue and white color scheme from like 2002 or 2003
i believe the Jazz had a rebrand in two step - first temporary minimalist jerseys so they have time to refine the purple/retro jerseys. I remember the agency that worked on it shared the purple jersey when the new brand was launched
Now they ruined the court.
Courts have got out of hand.
Cant help but to think they are distracting as hell to players.
Perhaps not but sure is way too much going on visually for my liking.
Leandro Barbosa already looks like he plays soccer, but those sleeved jerseys REALLY confirmed my theory 😂
Nike continuing to shove black in to the lakers purple uniforms is a sin. The classic purple with yellow stripes was their best look.
I Miss warmups especially in the 80's when each team had a unique design.
Yes, they have ruined them :(
Why
@@baconeggcheesepodcast9390basic design and cheap material
In my city, all these vintage jerseys, like the Raptors ones sell more and people pay more for these particular jerseys
Simple answer...yes
nba's biggest mistake of accessing more money than they currently making is that they should recognize and keep things that fans love such as loose jersey court designs trendy celebrations etc etc
but these jersey and the preseason court must stay in the nba it makes the games looks cooler and is more watchable even to non basketball fans
Im glad this GENERATION can see the importance of TRENDS AND MUSIC and how they influence culture
Good work guy . New subber..felt like I was the only one who noticed lakers gold turned yellow. Hate it .
Adidas and Reebok jersey were the best nike just charge high price for ok quality.
Those white ones from the Boozer, Williams, Kirelenko era were awesome.
@TheChosenMoose01 Plus the County Orlando is in called Orange County
I one with their minimalism styles. i do not like them, but whatever. I guess all brands are going with this corpo clean designs, but with what i got a massive issue is with mess up with the colors of the franchises.
Like. Before Nike you can turn on the TV and you instantly knew who were playing and where they were playing. White for local, color for visitors and you can instantly associate which team is from which city with their colors.
Power blue: Denver
Blue and Orange: Knicks
Red on Black: Portland
Black on red: Chicago
Red on Blue: Detroit
Blue and Yellow: Pacers
Purple and Black: Kings
And so much more.
I prefer the old way
Home: Whites
Away: Color
Alternative Home: White with 3rd color of the team
Alternative Visitor: 2nd color
Then you got the special day jersey like MLK,Green day, Latino week,Christmas and more special days.
I was a kid when those cartoonish jerseys came out. We hated them. Still do. They looked like rejected Adult Swim show logos.
Nike taking a page from world football by releasing new shirts every year
Great topic and a very original topic.. at least for me as I have never heard anyone discuss this topic before. Great job. And thanks for speaking proper English.
Nba jerseys have lost all meaning and significance. They dont even wear the proper colors anymore.
Some of the city editions jerseys look really cool like miami vice and charlotte hornets. But so many of them are bland, simple, ugly designs
When u see a red bulls 23 jersey that ment something. It brings back memories to specific games jordan wore that and won.
Also the shitty sponsorship logos make them even worse
The specific jersey you are wearing on this video, is in my opinion, the prettiest jersey ever. Definitely my favorite.
Jersey fatigue that's exactly what happend. When you create a jersey it has to mark an era off that time. Good or bad.
I hope u make it big bro I see the effort you put in
As a jersey collector i gotta say this is probably one of the best videos out there. Great job though
4:08 R.I.P. KOBE.
All i know is somebody fucked up dem falcon jerseys smh
This was a really great video
Yes it was❤❤❤❤❤
This was my intro to your channel bro dope vid !! Subbed
Nah Nike, I’m cool with my M&N swingman style like y’all used to make.
Way to go brother! More content like this
I only really started learning about basketball recently and this answered a lot of questions I had about all the different designs I'd seen when I went to all the team's wikipedia pages.
Today’s jersey are lame 😒
Why
It makes playing 2K unbearable
I find it interesting that Adidas didn't slap their logo on the shirts when they were making them.
David Stern wouldn't allow it. The new commissioner has a price for everything, and Nike was willing to pay it.
Well researched video young man, good stuff 👍🏻
Old school was the dopest.
Excellent video, good job sharing all viewpoints and the international aspect. I do hate the over saturation of designs tho. Definitely makes todays crop less iconic and more like product placement than an actual uniform that stands for something
I grew up watching the nba in the 90s, and the designs from that era are still unmatched
Hey! Thank you for the video. Really enjoyed it 👍🏻
(Just an note, the white association edition ones replaced home and icon edition replaced away jerseys, probably a tiny mistake 😊👍🏻)
I’m an 80’s/90’s guy so my childhood was in the mid 90’s and I really miss those times when NBA had 1 home, 1 away and max the third alternate jersey(s)
And I’m probably one of the very few people who really misses the all-star games when players wore their team jerseys not all-star uniforms. That way they really represented their teams. Hate that it’s gone
Keep up the work man, great stuff
🤜🏻🤛🏻
Nike messed up MLB unis as well
After they first messed up NFL uniforms.
Nice video twin
😂😂😂why do the uniforms look small and tight on basketball players? They don’t look comfortable at all. Then again, do you have to be if you’re shooting 3 pointers and playing no defense?🤣🤣🤣
A big pet peeve of mine with the Nike jerseys is how teams wear their alternates jerseys in the playoffs. I feel like the games feel so much bigger when they just wear their regular home and away uniforms.
Pretty sure in the nike era, only GS and Boston played their last game in the correct home and away jerseys. Before that, it was GS vs Cle in 2015.
That's on the league
Nike makes cheap garbage jerseys.
Super well researched video my man, felt like the 18 minutes flew by. Thinking of picking up one of the new Raptors jerseys myself.
Really nice video. You should have more subs man. Keep it up
Adidas was better. The Cavs sleeved jersey is a classic!
Just *_chef's kiss_*
Finally, the Christmas Jerseys (aka, sleeved threads) are abominations and should be nuked with a tsar bomba.
90s jerseys were 🔥 and my all-time favorites
- Magic
- Hornets
- Suns
- Vancouver Grizz
Very good video. Very clear, concise and most of all... kept my interest. Earned a subscribe.
Trust me. 😂
2:03 anyone catch that
I’m surprised that you didn’t talk about Nike outsourcing production of many products to Fanatics, which is partly responsible for the quality declining
Considering that the fabric was made by Nike, they deserve the blame.
Nike didn’t ruin the jerseys. Graphic designers with no vision ruined the jerseys.
No reason why they shouldnt have cleanest to date.
Very interesting video.
I could answer your title without even seeing the video:
From the perspective of an old fart, yes.
The jerseys are now bland I agree they’ve lost their taste or at least their interest in making them
I really enjoyed this video my man, hopefully you do a baseball uniform video!
FINALLY somebody said something about this lol I been screaming this for at least 4 years now. Nike has to go, bring back Adidas because Nike is fukkin it up!!!
Great video! Pistons and Raptors need to go back to their OG logo
i actually miss the home vs away jerseys. It was always so easy to understand who was the home and away team.
Them lake show jerseys CLEAN 🔥🔥
Its also worth to note why modern graphic design is minimalist: technology. Since a lot of our information arrived to us by technology like smartphones, branding should then be recognizable on a 7" screen. Sometimes even in monochrome. Hence, brands went for a minimal and streamlined look.
Starter NFL jackets in the 90's were pretty great in retrospect as well. Especially for somebody who grew up in that era.
Earthbound music in the background, good taste! lol
I like the new jerseys every year nike just has to do it the right way and keep the ones they hit one like the prince jerseys for Minnesota they should still be wearing that
