From around 1987 to 1998 I was really into basketball and the NBA. I played it on teams, collected basketball cards, had jerseys and clothing, new shoes each year, went to basketball camps in the summer, and watched it all the time on TV. I also was VERY into video games throughout that time. Both in arcades and at home, having as many as 5 home consoles at my peak. NBA Jam was a game that I really enjoyed. To some extent it was limited, and a short play. Nothing like Legend of Zelda Link to the Past or others like that. But it was just fun. I played it in arcades and on my SNES. It was a real mark of that time. Something I’ll always associate with the early and mid-90’s.
And then MJ retired and the league lost it's allure and you didn't want to watch him on the wizards even though he had some historic performances with them
I absolutely LOVED NBA Hangtime, it was the birth of my nickname where I created my first created character with a basketball head. I used to play TE SO much on my SEGA before then. Such an amazing franchise!
Great video! I was a 90’s kid and the hype of NBA Jam was unbelievable. Just having the ability to play and control your NBA heroes in that real TV format with the advanced graphics for its time was something that was unthinkable until that point. I think that today’s kids are looking for something that represents a more realistic game play.
Yep! People talk about the hype around street fighter 2 and mortal Kombat, and yeah there was a lot of hype around those, but EVERYONE played NBA Jam. Kids, teens, adults, sports fans who didn't normally play games, everyone. It was truly a different beast.
Awesome job. Your videos are always top notch. Jam is one of my favorite arcade games. I’m still hoping for the NFL Blitz video to be coming eventually.
There are so many Gaming History channels now a days, but I have to tell you that you really stand out to me and I really enjoy your content. The production is great and you can really see the amount of work that goes into the script and the research, etc. Your passion comes through in each and every video. I really appreciate your authentic personality and how youre not playing a character or that you dont ham it up for the camera like so many others do. I have been a fan of yours for years and look forward to each new video. Keep up the great work man!
Thanks for hitting ALL the corners. I am always disappointed in other videos but it feels like you covered every inspiration and legacy game after the classics exactly as I remember them. I'm surprised that it really WASN'T a follow-up to Arch Rivals but keenly remember feeling at the time that it was the next evolution of High Impact football. :) You earned a sub.
Thanks a lot. I almost included a section on NBA jam knock-offs like Barkley: Shut Up and Jam, but I felt like it was just diluting the video. I might do a smaller separate video on the knock-offs at some point though.
I just realized that all 3 players on Inside the NBA are in this game... I played it so many times, but for got about Kenny "The Jet" Smith being in the game!
I love this channel. It always hits so hard and the effort involved is obvious with the 3D production values. Seeing GameSack and MVG commenting speaks volumes.
Growing up in Chicago and seeing Midway put out machines before anywhere else was something else. I'll never forget at around age 8 at Just Games on Harlem Avenue a 20-something year old came in and plopped a quarter on the MK II screen I was at. He would eventually perform a Fatality on me, revert it to a Babality, back into fighter form.. and then into another Babality before exploding the baby into a Fatality. As the only witness to that, none of my friends at the time believed me.
That was probably my friend Eddie Ferrier. He was one of the game testers for the MK series. We used to always go to Dennis Place for Games on Cumberland and Lawrence. That was the first permanent test site for MK 1. We also played a lot of Street Fighter there too along with the test pinballs. Pinball is my main jam still till this day. I’ve been competing now in tournaments for 30 plus years, started at age 17. I became friends with all the Bally/Williams/Midway guys playing in the first Chicago PAPA pinball league at Diversions arcade.
This game was fun for an arcade game. But I don’t know why anyone would want to play it for very long at home. It’s not like you can do anything but play two on two. It also doesn’t depend very much on passing, which is my favorite part of the basketball. funny to hear them say the game was inspired by that football game the game when people have been playing street ball for so long. I’ve always wanted someone to create a game that was more like street ball, but more of a street simulation than something that features 30 foot dunks from half court. I was losing interest in NBA 2K my team because I was so tired of the computer making my players do 360 windmills in crunch time of a close game when all I needed was two points. Then I found out how to play off-line against the computer. I started creating players, and changing their animations to traditional, fundamental animations. I started changing the tendencies to reflect those fundamentals. I also gave every player perfect attributes and badges. You might think this sounds boring, but I started creating computer teams this way as well. I’d play with the new players for a bit and then give them to the AI teams. The game became extremely difficult and fun-also realistic. I think I’m pretty good at 2K, but I made the computer so good that every game was close. I have to run plays and make good decisions just to beat the computer. I also started modifying nba player builds, so I made shooting guard Kareem, point guard Shaq, 6 foot eight Steve Kerr, Rasheed Wallace, and so on. I change the size of the historic players as well. For example, Shaquille O’Neal became 6 foot eight but still very big and dominant as a point guard. You might think the game sounds boring if you play my team online all day, but it’s extremely fun when the computer has the best animations and tendencies and starts to play, realistically-on HOF difficulty of course. I don’t play that much these days but this is what I would play if I started again. I wish I would’ve figured that out before I played my team for a couple years. I just enjoy the game so much more when they’re difficult and realistic. I got tired of losing the guys who play all day until they figure out how to glitch the game and have no intention to play realistically. Anyway, I guess I got carried away talking about a different game. My bad.
I don't know how you have the talent to produce so many facets of those videos. I'm always in admiration of this kind of creativity. I remember trading NBA Jam for Mario Kart for a week with my best friend as a kid and one day his mom came over and ask for the NBA Jam back and I just said "no" hahaha we laugh about it to this day. What an epic game. My go to were the Supersonics. Awesome video seeing the backstory of this amazing franchise! Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it! I'm just trying to make videos I'd find interesting myself and I've really been enjoying learning 3D modeling and animation the last few years. Thanks again, comments like these make the time and effort worth it!

Worse, ONE guy got a million 😬. But to be fair, it grossed a billion dollars in quarters for arcade operators, not directly to midway. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find the royalty amounts for the rest of the people that worked on it outside of the bonus for finishing the game early.
This game was amazing when it came out in the arcades. When Jam dropped on consoles on JamDay, had my Aunt pick me up from school and bring me right to the mall to buy it. Of course, had to hit up the arcade in there and play a quick game of Jam before slapping it in my console at home!! That was the best feeling!
you are BACK !!!!!!!!!!!! every time you post a video it feels like its my birthday ! . Your videos are absolutely FIRST CLASS ! . Wishing you a million more subs !!
First time hearing of this channel. Subscribed. This was a great video. I was always impressed with Jam as a little kid playing on Genesis but it's more impressive after watching this. That's cool that they picked up a dude playing street ball to start one of the most iconic images in gaming history. "Boomshakalaka!"
Uh, sir, I need my video game retrospectives to be given to me by a nerd. You look like you can get laid, and clearly know your way around a weight room. Therefore, I shall take any info provided in this video with a grain of salt.
💀 😂 I assure you, my collection of CD-i consoles and games basically counteracts any perceived lack of nerdiness or ability to get laid you may have perceived. I mean, did you see the Star Trek stuff on my shelves in the lower right hand corner? 😬 This comment legit cracked me up. I'm going to leave it pinned for a bit. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Live long and prosper 🖖🏻
Despite not actually ever playing it, I've seen quite a few documentaries about NBA Jam here on YT. They all mostly cover the same stuff, I was worried this was gonna be another rehash of basically the same things, but yours actually stood on its own and went over a lot of things that weren't covered in those. Really awesome. Wasn't much of a football guy, but I used to play a ton of NFL Blitz though ("I brought the hurt on you boy!" lives in my head rent-free). Cool to see that it shares a common thread with Jam. Maybe I oughta play it some time. Great work my dude. Love that you're back in action.
Thanks so much! I had a great time revisiting the game and its history myself while making it. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I appreciate it.
Thanks so much! Just in case TH-cam didn't put them on your feed, I've got 3 other videos I've recently put out in the last few months. Should have another one out in November

This game is a pop culture icon, especially when they released it for Sega and Nintendo. My brother’s neighbor has one of those arcade games in his basement. Haven’t been a video gamer since 1995 or 96. But this is definitely an arcade game I’d love to have. And 30-31 years later my brother still has our Genesis cartridge of NBA Jam.
Nobody, and I mean nobody, does video game documentaries better than Wrestling With Gaming. I know these videos must take you forever to make, but thank you so much for making them. I absolutely love this game and I'm pretty sure I wore out my copy of NBA Hang-Time on N64. Excellent video 11/10! ❤
You're too kind, thank you! These do take a long time to make but I've got a few ideas to change up my workflow to get them out a little sooner. I'd love to get up to two a month next year.
Welcome back I am so glad you are okay from Milton! I got lucky and fortunate here in Palm Harbor. It was a lot of stress for all us in Tampa Bay NBA Jam is one of my all time favorites! I remember it being one of my first true arcade experiences with my older brother at Aladdin's Castle in Countryside mall and Celebration Station!
Thanks! Glad to hear you were ok. Thankfully I didn't have any major damage but a ton of debris cleanup. Hopefully we're done with hurricanes for the year.
Another amazing video! You have really honed your 3D and editing skills! I have a ton of respect for big modern games but man... those old-school games made with small teams where you can just feel all the developers' ingenuity, personality and hard work were something special.
I really enjoyed this and super pumped you had Tim Kitzrow in this video. I definitely have fond memories of playing NBA Jam TE on SNES, NBA Hangtime on SNES and NBA on NBC on N64. I miss these games. On Fire Edition was actually not bad
Solid video brother. This game consumed much of my high school career haha, we used to play it at the local pizza shop and sometimes almost get in fist fights, the best was AT THE BUZZER! Man I bet several hundred of that billion dollars was me alone.
Just saw a good buddy of mine from school days way back when, we hadn't seen eachother in over 20 years- and the one game we jumped on within an hour or so was none other than NBA Jam! 🤘 Truly a timeless classic! ❤
High Digitized (Not sure how to spell it) graphics are burned into my mind when I used to walk into Tilt. The loud noises, flashes, real people in games were something new that I never saw before due to the NES days. Take me back!!! lol
Another banger of a video! 10/10 production values as always. We still have NBA Jam on both Genesis/Mega Drive and SNES, an absolute classic whether you cared about the sport or not.
as a kid in 93,just after the wall in east germany fell, this game was heaven back than. played the SNES version and i love it to this day. a classic for sure.

I grew up with Will. This was major for us and there was a code you could enter to get him as a player on the arcade game and kill folks. He passed away 2 years ago...rip Wil.Great video.
Loved the arcade version of NBA Jams. I remember the first time I ever played it at AstroWorld in the mid-late ‘90’s. However, my all time favorite basketball game of that era was NBA Give and Go for the SNES! It was 5v5 and a bit more realistic with different camera angles and alley hoops, ball fakes, trick passes, and a variety of intense dunks! Nick Van Exel was unstoppable from behind the arc and Stockton and Malone were invincible with the play that gave the game its name! Although there was no Jordan, it still hit hard af when a group of around 6 or 8 of us from school would get together with some sticky green sustenance and run tournaments with 3 minute quarters… Ah, tha memories!!!
And thank you for watching! I played a lot of the SNES one at home and the Sega one at my friend's place when it came out. Great memories with both but I'm partial to the SNES since that's what I had at the time.
I've always loved NBA JAM, to this day it's a go to arcade machine for me to play if I see it. The gameplay is almost like a fighting game, it's that satisfying.
First time I played the franchise was NBA Jam TE on PS1, around 1998 and loved it. Was so fun. I dont think I ever saw the Acclaim arcade release of JAM until watching this video, but graphically I like the Midway ones more.
NBA Jam was *THE* game that made me fell in love with Sports Video Games. I bought both the Super NES and SEGA Genesis ports and even the later Tournament Edition for the PS-X. 👍
Boomshakalaka! Loved this game spent so many of my quarters on this, Simpsons the game and of course street fighter 2. This is one of the few games i remember where cheat codes were actually programmed into the game for fun. What a classic
Awesome video as always and that 3D animation are marvelous... Another essential watch for you all NBA JAM afficionados would be Pandamonium Saturn Review of the Game (the Tournament Edition) and Modern Vintage Gamer on How NBA JAM tricks you as player to feel in the edge all the time when playing the game
Buddy!!! You are on FIRE!!! Another excellent documentary of the NBA Jam franchise or series... I miss that mess of the craziness of the arcades with NBA Jam. If it wasn't NBa Jam, it would be X-Men, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Terminator, Superman, Avengers, Hoop machine, etc... Anyway, awesome and nostalgic documentary- Boom!!! Chakalaka!!! 😁🤜🤛👍💪🖖
Thanks man! I miss the energy in arcades back then too. So much felt fresh, new, and cool and you got to geek out over it with people experiencing it for the first time too. It's one of the few things I go "back in my day..." about.

Another banger! Your editing and presentation keeps getting better and better. Great stuff!
I'm trying! Thanks so much!
I do love Blitz so I might cover it some day. Probably won't be for a while if I do
There are so many Gaming History channels now a days, but I have to tell you that you really stand out to me and I really enjoy your content.
That’s really kind of you to say. I truly appreciate the support! Thanks!
I know your videos not getting so many views these days but appreciate your content. keeps getting better
Appreciate you watching and the kind words!
Taking my brother and nephew to Chicago next weekend to see the Midway arcade history museum exhibit. Should be amazing!
Ah, that's great! I know a guy that worked on it and it's amazing.
@@WrestlingWithGaming just left and got in to Galloping Ghost. Really nice exhibit.
Thanks a lot! It's always nice to get some love from creators as good those two.
What a great documentary, the memories were flowin! 🏀
Thanks for watching, glad to hear it brought back some good memories!
My bad.
first sports game I LIKED. The arcade feel even brought in non NBA fans.
100% Jam and Blitz were games anyone could get into.
@ it’s my pleasure. It’s people like you who are the lifeblood of what makes TH-cam so special. You should consider adding a donate button on here! Or do you have a Patreon? Keep up the amazing work!
@nicolaselhani I have a Patreon but I don't think I enabled the option to donate on specific videos. I'll look into that. And thanks again!
This is one of three sports games I actually enjoyed lol
Awesome video man :D
Me too! I'd say this and Blitz are the two that I liked the most. Probably cause they're so ridiculous yet fun and I don't really watch actual sports.
Dude, you are killing it.. This is the best retro gaming retrospective channel on TH-cam right now. Amazing graphics!
Thanks! Comments like this make the effort worth it.
@@WrestlingWithGaming You need to make more content. Your attention to research and detail is top notch. Looking forward to new videos.
This guy has such an underrated channel. I love his attention to detail and coverage.
Thanks!
Amazing work as always. Im always in love with your creative transitions.
Thanks Ian. All inspired by Trip Hawkins, of course.
@WrestlingWithGaming as is tradition
This guy's... ON FIRE! Is it the shoes yahel?
Actually, it's the CD-i collection 🥴
I have never played it, but i will certainly download it and have a play. It looks quite good. I have only been playing video games since about 2017, despite being 54, so i have some catching up to do.
Still the best NBA game. Never to be bested imo.
I had a TON of fun playing Street. But yes, this and TE are untouchable.
I was coming to write this exact thing.... 😆 had the most fun and still to this day. Have the most fun of all basketball games with NBA JAM
I had the pleasure of meeting Tim Kitzrow in April and he is such a chill dude! Also I love this video and very much enjoy your content, glad you are still making videos ❤
Thanks! I've had the pleasure of meeting him a few times and he's always been really nice. He's super engaged with fans at the cons too
The game rakes in one billion and people responsible for the work get just one million. The industry hasn't changed.
Worse, ONE guy got a million 😬. But to be fair, it grossed a billion dollars in quarters for arcade operators, not directly to midway. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find the royalty amounts for the rest of the people that worked on it outside of the bonus for finishing the game early.
Would you cry about becoming a millionaire?
This game was amazing when it came out in the arcades. When Jam dropped on consoles on JamDay, had my Aunt pick me up from school and bring me right to the mall to buy it. Of course, had to hit up the arcade in there and play a quick game of Jam before slapping it in my console at home!! That was the best feeling!
you are BACK !!!!!!!!!!!! every time you post a video it feels like its my birthday ! . Your videos are absolutely FIRST CLASS ! . Wishing you a million more subs !!
Thanks! I would've had this one out a couple of weeks ago but Hurricane Milton threw a snag in those plans.
@@WrestlingWithGaming I hope you are alright and nothing major happened
This comment legit cracked me up. I'm going to leave it pinned for a bit. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Live long and prosper 🖖🏻
That reply earned a subscription. 😂
Thanks! I probably should've flat out mentioned that NFL blitz was another Mark turmell game
That was a fun video to watch. It really took me back to my youth, and your detail paid great homage to a legendary game.
Thanks so much! I had a great time revisiting the game and its history myself while making it. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I appreciate it.
So happy to see you back! Your gaming videos are a hidden gem on TH-cam. Thank you!
Thanks so much! Just in case TH-cam didn't put them on your feed, I've got 3 other videos I've recently put out in the last few months. Should have another one out in November
Bruh your 3D work is so good. Another banger of a video.
Thanks a lot! I've been trying to up my 3D game a bit with each video so I appreciate it
⬇️➡️➡️BA⬅️. ….that’s engrained in my mind forever
Visually! this is one of the most impressive things ive ever seen! Kudos to the animator but also the entire team! AMAZING CONTENT!
Thanks a lot! But there's no team, I (Yahel) do everything. The writing, research, 3d stuff, editing, hosting, and catering. But dude, it coming off like there's a team is a huge compliment. Sincerely thank you.
Brilliance as always, good sir! An excellent retrospective, you’re always ON FIRE1
Thanks so much!
Welcome back I am so glad you are okay from Milton! I got lucky and fortunate here in Palm Harbor. It was a lot of stress for all us in Tampa Bay
NBA Jam is one of my all time favorites!
So many good memories for me! Really well put together doc as always
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it!
Another amazing video! You have really honed your 3D and editing skills!
I have a ton of respect for big modern games but man... those old-school games made with small teams where you can just feel all the developers' ingenuity, personality and hard work were something special.
I agree, there's something special about the games from that era. And thanks, I've been working hard on improving my 3D work.
I really enjoyed this and super pumped you had Tim Kitzrow in this video. I definitely have fond memories of playing NBA Jam TE on SNES, NBA Hangtime on SNES and NBA on NBC on N64. I miss these games. On Fire Edition was actually not bad
What’s up @WrestlingWithGaming incredible video. Thanks for the content. Please make more like this of other arcade games.
Thanks! I might cover some arcade games in the future but I'm curious to see how this video does first.
Great video I didnt want it to end. A history of Midway Sports video would be a awesome video to consider doing in the future.
Solid video brother. This game consumed much of my high school career haha, we used to play it at the local pizza shop and sometimes almost get in fist fights, the best was AT THE BUZZER! Man I bet several hundred of that billion dollars was me alone.
I have the 2010 NBA Jam on my PS3, still!
Excellent coverage of an iconic game franchise! I learned a lot and it was very entertaining! Subbed!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Just saw a good buddy of mine from school days way back when, we hadn't seen eachother in over 20 years- and the one game we jumped on within an hour or so was none other than NBA Jam! 🤘 Truly a timeless classic! ❤
Yeah, it really still holds up well. Tons of fun playing against other people to this day.
Thanks. And yeah,, it's one of those games anyone can play and "get" right away and have fun with
as a kid in 93,just after the wall in east germany fell, this game was heaven back than. played the SNES version and i love it to this day. a classic for sure.
Omg! This is making me smile so much. So many precious memories. I feel like a kid again right now.
It was a great time to grow up if you loved arcade games. The golden age.
Last month I found a complete copy of NBA Jam 's version on Mega Drive (that was the Genesis for we europeans, sorry american people) for just 3€.
I grabbed it INSTANTLY! It's always a pleasure seeing you back in action, mate!!
Played that version a lot at my friend's house. Got a lot of good memories with it myself!
Great to see one of the best gaming channels back.
I must have watched the Goldeneye video 100 times and this one will be a recording watch as well.
Your production was already awesome and I see even more improvement in this video.
Hey Stevie! It's good to hear from you, man. And thanks so much for the compliment, means a lot coming from you. I've definitely been working to improve my 3D work.
Phenomenal video! I always love learning something new about NBA JAM!!
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it!
As always, great to see another one of your videos! Great job on NBA Jam :D
Thanks so much!
this game ate all my coins day in , day out...and loved it! pistons and isiah thomas ! great video man!
Thank you for your content. It is always appreciated by me and hopefully everyone else!
And thank you for taking the time to watch and to leave a comment. It really means a lot to me and commenting helps with the old TH-cam algorithm.
@@WrestlingWithGaming I was worried that you might be on hiatus indefinitely, therefore a period. I am glad you are still here.
@jacanda2001 oh I've been posting. This is my 4th video in the last 6 months. TH-cam just hasn't been sharing my content much it seems. Hoping to have another one out in a few weeks.
@@WrestlingWithGamingI know I was meaning during the year you were away.
@jacanda2001 ah gotcha!
I don't know how I missed this when it first dropped. It was great as usual, Yahel. Thanks.
Thanks so much. Glad it eventually popped up on your feed.
I grew up with Will. This was major for us and there was a code you could enter to get him as a player on the arcade game and kill folks. He passed away 2 years ago...rip Wil.Great video.
Incredible artwork. This is top notch production. Well done.
Thank you. I put a ton of work into the visuals for this one so I really appreciate it.
I appreciate the research you've done for this video, great job!
Thanks! Glad you liked it
Loved the arcade version of NBA Jams. Although there was no Jordan, it still hit hard af when a group of around 6 or 8 of us from school would get together with some sticky green sustenance and run tournaments with 3 minute quarters…
Ah, tha memories!!!
Yahel is heating up!!! Welcome back CD-i King!
lol thanks!
This is fantastic! Thank you for making this one. One of my favorite SNES games.
And thank you for watching! I played a lot of the SNES one at home and the Sega one at my friend's place when it came out. Great memories with both but I'm partial to the SNES since that's what I had at the time.
Your retro game history videos are always awesome - thanks.
Thanks a lot!
@wrestlingwithgaming once again a fantastic video and a trip down memory lane... Your channel is truly underrated
Thank you! I appreciate you checking it out!
learned a ton about one of my favorite games from my childhood in the 90's. Great work
Thank you and that's great to read 🖖🏻
NBA Hangtime was awesome at the time!
Great job on this mini-doc. I never really took time to consider the history of NBA JAM. Now I may have to play a game or two of the PS3 version.
Thanks! I had to play a lot of it for this video and it still holds up imo.
I love your videos. You should be have more followers and views. Glad to see you back with really good content
Glad you're enjoying the content! Hopefully more people find it soon!
Thanks and great recommendations.
Had this game on Sega Genesis! Got it on the day it came out, at a grocery store that had an electronics section..thanks for the video 🏀
Thank you so much for this! Great work as always!!
Thanks for the kind words and for watching!
