The Satchel and Page Bomber Jacket

  • Satchel and Page impressed me with their reasonably priced yet extremely high quality leather goods, so it should have come as no surprise that their leather jackets would follow suit. Once I saw the bomber jacket I couldn't click "Add to cart" fast enough, yet I was a bit apprehensive. It wasn't because of the obviously superior styling or the extremely high quality materials, it was that "tailored fit" that had me worried. Tailored fit can mean any number of things, from skinny to slightly slimmer than classic, and as a guy with broad shoulders this has been a struggle in the past.
One of the issues with leather jackets is the large arm holes and overall boxy fit which isn't easy to tailor like a suit jacket. Im happy to say that the fit is definitely slim but not tight, they seem to have found a happy medium that will make any guy look like a badass. All this for HALF of what you'd pay at a place like Schott Bros, color me impressed!
I think these are highly underrated leather jackets and are a clear indicator of the bright future of Satchel and Page.

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

Carl, I know I'm late commenting on this, the video is date stamped two years ago. But, I'm glad you're addressing the challenges faced by those of us who are "differently shaped". I find it challenging being stocky, I'm short but have broad shoulders, and breadth around the midsection. This makes finding jackets, and shirts a challenge. Finding pants with a 28 inch inseam is also a challenge; but, that's a separate issue.
I like that the jacket is well made, with good materials, and is at, a reasonable price, for leather jackets. The removable fleece collar liner is a great addition too. Thanks!

Hey Carl just got this. It's my first leather jacket, it's more substantial than I expected. That tartan lining is really beautiful, really enhances the look. The one thing I don't agree with you on is the throat latch. I'm a leather jacket newbie so I may be wrong but I find the latch kinda uslesess, when the zipper is closed all the way up the latch doesn't do much. Other than that it's a great jacket!

    • @yacobz
      @yacobz ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed. Ultimately I had to return the jacket mostly due to the gussets on the side. On my body the gussets flared out a lot which ruined the silhouette of the jacket from the back and side.

From someone that worked in the retail industry for quite sometime, don’t get deceived by the fit of the items on models. Those items, in catalogues and website are mostly tailored to fit the models body in order to make them look good. Most of the time they’re sample sizes (40R jacket, Medium shirt and 30 or 32 waist). It’s always better to try on the item itself. Like the video says, take your time and check on item, reviews and fit as much as you can.

Everyone on a budget should look around every second hand store in their town for the perfect leather jacket.
Look around every one a few times and the larger ones on a weekly basis until you find a perfect fit in the perfect style. Look at every single leather jacket in the store.
I volounteer at one, good items usually sell in a few days, and nothing is kept around longer than six weeks. So yes, looking through them once a week is worth it.
It's a big time investment but with the right eye for quality you'll end up with a beautiful leather jacket for 30-60 bucks that outclasses anything in the 100 dollar to 200 dollar range

As a quick addendum to this video, I want to make a quick first impression of the Montgomery Jacket that Satchel and Page sell, as Carl did a great review of the Bomber.
The only size currently left for the Montgomery jacket is large. I'm 6ft and not "differently shaped" or super buff. I personally don't prefer the Bomber's look, but I was super stoked for the Montgomery so I risked it being just a little large:
    - As I understand it, most sizing recommendations have you measure the entire circumference of your body. The Satchel and Page sizing chart seems to recommend from the center of the armpit and down. A little strange, but manageable.
    - The jacket's shoulder (from the ends of the shoulder seams where it meets the arms) is about 19.5 inches wide, measured from the back. My shoulders seem to be 18.5 inches wide and the jacket seems to fit my shoulders nicely in the sense that my shoulder's curves are matched by the jacket. The sizing chart on their website suggests that medium might have been small for me at 18.25 inch shoulders recommended.
-My "pit to pit" size, which appears to be a modifier version of chest sizing is about 21.5 inches from the center of the pits. The sizing chart suggests medium and I think I agree. There is slightly too much material for me, though I still think it looks fine. I have been planning on bulking up a little, so I'll fill out just a bit and this should be fine.
-My "mid" size, appears to be about 20in putting me between medium and large, though medium probably would have been fine.
-My "waist" size is 21, which puts me at large, though I'm not personally sure how much the waist size matters.
-My sleeve length is about 25in which would be a medium and the sizing chart is correct, the large is just barely too much.
-Front length: With only an inch difference between medium and large I don't think it matters. Having said that, I measure myself at 22in, though the large sizing is fine in my eyes.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the fit of the Montgomery jacket.
Carl mentions how nice the gusset on the Bomber jacket is for freedom of movement and he's absolutely right - Montgomery doesn't have gussets and reaching up will take the jacket up with your arms. Reaching forward pulls the cuffs a bit back, but is no problem.

the leather thickness seems not comparable with the one on AERO jackets. I've got two of them and they are a tank! Ok, you really need to wear them in for a longer time an they might be a little bit too warm for summer, but I'm sure they will last my lifetime =)

Based on this review I bought the “updated” version of this Bomber Jacket late 2020. I am impressed with the overall quality of the jacket…but…there is a major design flaw, in my opinion!
The Jacket sleeves are just too tight…specially around the armpits!
So tight that it actually feels uncomfortable to use, even wearing only a T-shirt!
I am 6’ 180lbs (chest 44 in) and got the XL, following size recommendation from Satchel & Page…and it is definitely the “right” size…and sizing up to XXL is not an option because the sleeves would be too long.
I couldn’t return the jacket because I am not living in the USA and by the time I got it, it was too late to send it back, according to the return policy.
For international buyers, due to long shipping times (& cost), I would NOT recommend this jacket…in case it doesn’t fit you, it is a logistic nightmare to return the jacket.
It’s a shame, because it is really a nice Jacket.
…it looks nice hanging in my wardrobe 🤷‍♂️😬

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Alex! Sorry to hear you missed the window on these man, that's a bummer. The first thing I would do is email Satchel and Page to see if they have any left in stock. Just because its sold out doesn't mean they don't have a few stragglers, and its worth a shot! If that doesn't work, I'd be wary of Thursday Boots. If their leather bags are anything like their jackets, it's passable at best. If it were you I'd check out Gustin and see if they have any leather jackets coming out in the near future. They're awesome, made in the USA, and really affordable. If you simply can't wait, I highly recommend Schott Bros. They're another heritage brand with a reputation for quality, and they have a huge selection. Finally I think its worth looking at the new leather jackets from Taylor Stitch, they look incredible and are made by Golden Bear.

I bought a Gibson and Barnes "Civil G-1" about 15+years ago in lambskin/black.....(The milspec model has no hand warmer pockets)....and it still looks like the day I got it. From what I can tell the quality of my jacket is FAR superior in construction to the one you are reviewing...and a tad less expensive.....Still it's priced right at $500 +/-......but with good quality you should always get what you pay for.
When I was in the Navy the pilots always gave their "issue G-1" to their girlfriend and ordered the "milspec version G-1" Gibson and Barnes for their service use....They looked, fit and felt superior to "issue" and were highly coveted by the junior officers.
My son will enjoy it long after I'm gone....and his son will as well.

I like this video. I learnt new word. Gussetted back, bi swing/action back. I like that look.
I like Rick oconnells leather jacket in the mummy returns 21 minutes into film. Dark brown textured, no shine looking with point collars with button enclose and gussetted back that ends towards lower back with a 2 inch band across lower back like this satchel and page one, and waist length to bum level. And slash pockets, not Indiana Jones patch pockets like this satchel and page one. Satchel and page are you getting the hint?😉 Design a Rick oconnell jacket. There's enough Indiana jones

What makes me skeptical about online catalog ordering is the Thumbnail photo you used I have seen on several different websites advertising leather coats so if anyone can use these photos it may be misleading as to what your actually going to get when you order from that site. Online ordering is a very risky undertaking. But that is a nice coat you got.

  • @crtune

Probably many have seen the bomber jackets made by either Buzz Rickson or by Eastman Leather. But for a far better deal, yet quite authentic and good construction you should check out Gibson and Barnes (out of San Diego, CA area, with some of the construction being done in northern Mexico). The source of leather is excellent, and G&B insists upon details that follow the traditional form very carefully. So, you can get a great A2, or G1, with real mouton, and even the perforations and labeling you would see on the originals. I obtained one of their "Civil A2" model which has side-entry handwarmer pockets, a feature which is not consistent with the original A2 design, but which is good for those cold days.
    www.gibson-barnes.com/
G&B cater to actual pilots with helmets, mic equipment, storage bags, jumpsuits and so forth. But these same pro pilots tend to like the flight jackets from the forties and fifties too.

For a company thats really just using an old style, save a few hundred dollars and hit up an army/navy surplus store and grab a G1 for $150 or less. Just go with your chest size or 1 size smaller.

  • @crtune
    @crtune 5 ปีที่แล้ว

This is an example of a "civil" G-1 (Navy type) flight jacket from Gibson and Barnes:
    www.gibson-barnes.com/prod-293977/Civil-G1.html#
They have not only basic leather flight jackets of very high quality (and accurate details), but also loving recreations of famous flight jackets from the war, like the 1943 model A2 jacket, or "Flying Tigers" models. These are more expensive. I own a civil model A2 in brown goatskin. The leather is excellent, and all the construction is fantastic, not a stray stitch anywhere. This company also sells helmets and headsets, as well as all other suits and items for professional helicopter and aircraft pilots. It's not someplace just in business for the role play. Their customers often make a living flying. The owner is a former USMC aviator, and this is now family-run. Prices beat most of the others without any reduction in quality.

Too Indiana Jones looking. I like Rick oconnells in the mummy returns 21minutes into movie.
Dark brown non shiny textured leather jacket i think. Slash side pockets. Gussetted back. A 2inch wide panel across back on lower back of jacket similar to this one. And stitching 3 inches from bottom of hem of jacket all across with no knitted hem. Button enclosure rather than zip.
Satchel and page should watch movie and replicate it.

Hand warmer pockets are a dead giveaway that it’s phony. I realize it’s not milspec but if you are going to ape the milspec vibe, go all the way. The jacket is nice enough, but you can buy authentic G-1’s for way less than the S&P version. If you really want to pry open the wallet, Eastman and/or Real McCoy’s sell super authentic reproductions but they’re gonna cost you.

    • @CarlMurawski

Carl Murawski about 20 years ago I had an Eastman B6 (kind of like a B3, but lighter and even more snug...) and like a fool, I sold it along with a Hanhart fleiger Luftwaffe watch.
