Honestly I have a peacoat that I wear as my casual/formal/winter coat. I feel like they’re super versatile and easy to dress up or down. For reference I live in Michigan.
I got a Banana Republic peacoat about 8 years ago. It's not available anymore, but it is the style with a removable "liner" in the hem, which is more just like a fake layer, since it doesn't actually line the cost, just closes off the usual gaps a peacoat would leave - the front of the chest, and neck. It's a fantastic coat, and I wear it as my fall/winter go to coat. They're super versatile, especially with the removable fake layer. I did not take care of it, but the exterior looks great, I just need to reline it 😅
As an Albertan who actually bought a b-7 and absolutely loves it as a winter coat I love that you mentioned it. I’ve been tempted to make a video on it because like you said you never see the things
@@justicebinder6544 I got mine through bison trading out of Vancouver and it is an aero leather jacket. From what I’ve read they are very high end in the leather work and they actually had the contract to make them for the American military during ww2. It was made to measure. I couldn’t be happier with both aero and bison trading. I paid 1800 if i remember correctly. So not the most expensive of the b7 models but i can’t complain in any way about the jacket
@@KyleMeyer949 not cheap by any measure either. Something I’ll probably hold off on till I have more money. I live in Missouri, and it definitely can be well below freezing here but it’s not THAT cold where I need a b7.
Love the Alberta shout out. I work snow removal up here in the far north of the province where with the windchill it gets to minus 83 degrees Fahrenheit on occasion. I bought some of the fleeces you mentioned in your cold weather videos and they have been a huge upgrade over my typical mid layer (usually a Sherpa lined flannel or a crew neck). However with the workers on the oil fields and construction sites here you rarely actually see heavy parkas unless it's people who do not move much like equipment operators or sign holders. Typically it's just heavy bibs or coveralls and a lighter jacket. This is to prevent sweating.
I have been wearing my F&T trucker jacket over a Tee Shirt and 10 year hoodie. It’s all I have needed so far this winter living in the Fort Erie area. I love the rugged look.
Good list. I would add a dedicated rain coat, especially if you live in the PNW. Also I get a lot more use out of my down puffer than my parka. I get way too hot in the latter unless it's 0F / -15C or lower.
Honestly this video not only taught me about something I've been contemplating investing in but also your great at presenting this info clearly and naturally. Kudos👏🤝
My main rotation is a B-3, a duffle coat, a houndstooth formal coat and two denim jackets. One of the denim jacket is a green stone island from the 90s and the other is a 1969 Levi’s type 3. I live in Germany, so it does get cold, but nothing extreme.
I have a B7 copy I bought from Willis & Geiger 20+ years ago. Don't need it all that often but I love this coat. So warm, used by troops in the Aleutians I believe in WW2. My college coach flew B24s in the war and he said it might be 60 degrees at take-off and -25 flying over the Himalayas to give Tojo his presents.
Waxed cotton/canvas jacket- Doubles as a work jacket and a rain jacket Nice jacket (honestly become less important nowadays) Late fall/early winter coat- You said it, a nice wool coat like the peacoat would be good. "It's so cold, I shouldn't be outside" coat
I just ordered a really nice Jacket, from Weatherwool. The All Around Jacket. I am a big fan of them, when it comes to outside gear. I have their Rak, the Patriot, and just ordere the AAJ and the Patriot Vest
I have a stupid collection of coats and jackets. The B-7 Aleutian Parka is awesome. Just weight is difficult to travel with. Love all my Shearing as they are warm and durable. For extremely cold regions I have PHD Omega Parka, out of the UK. A U.S. option would be Feathered Friends. Thanks for a great channel. Always get some good ideas on clothing. Just got my first pair IronHeart. Based on your review. Cheers.
Coats and Jackets are some of my favorite items. I have all the varaints, down, synthetic down, shells, insulated ski jackets, Pea coat, leather jacket, suede jacket, Rain coats, softshells, yea its gotten out of control over the years. Helly Hansen & Arcteryx are my favorite "Active/get outside" outwear brands, that I continue to purchase.
I have a friend who, like me, loves jackets. The first time I met him he was wearing this corduroy sport style jacket with an eagle embroidered on the back. It looked sick, and I always envision him with it on.
For leather jackets the BEST quality/price ratio I've ever found is Soul Revolver. Fantastic wide range of styles for around $400-500. Sounds like a lot but honestly anything less isn't worthwhile, just get denim. I highly recommend their Ghost Rider which is a simplified classic 50's style and the Café Racer style, a bit more modern. Both have the back pleats/gussets that allow a slimmer fit with ease of motion. Their bonber styles are great too.
On overcoats, size your first one like a pea coat. To fit on a thick sweater not a suit jacket, looks way better on days you don't need a suit jacket underneath. Pair it with a nice paisley scarf and you're good to go. I have 9 of them in wool melton wool twill, cotton twill and leather. If you're tall, long coats are the only way to go.
I've got a couple of the Patagonia hemp canvas coats. The ranch jacket and the hooded jacket. Excellent value and VERY tough construction. Also pliable right out of the box.
Thank you for adding that detail about how work jackets are supposed to fit. I just got my first chore coat from J.C. King and it fit exactly as you said: boxy. Glad I came across your video in my “chore coat fit” search, looks like I got the correct size after all!
I think you could also add a weather/rain category here as well. Obviously there’s some cross over but it could stand alone as it’s own category as well.
I met Thedi quite often in Berlin at the selvedgerun. He is such a humble guy but an amazing artisan. His belts and jackets are unique and a pure show of craftsmanship. With Thedi you can't go wrong
Coolest jackets are the Crust Punk jackets. Putting studs and spikes is one thing, but building up a band patch collection as you go to more and more shows, building up a sweaty patina from going in the pits… They are like the shield to a spartan. Every crust punk dies with his/her jacket it’s a rule
This is a really well done video and I’m going to start looking at a shearling coat to add to my collection. I also like some trench coats for formal outer wear
Great list! These are mine. What are everybody else’s? Work jacket - hoodies I got for free from work. Also, a Patagonia work vest I have. Casual Jacket - Flint and Tinder Waxed trucker, Flint and Tinder 10 year hoodie Formal Jacket - Pendleton wool overcoat or Charcoal Chore Coat from Taylor Stitch Heavy Coat - Pendleton wool overcoat or my Indigo Sashiko jacket from Taylor stitch
I replaced my chore jacket with an M65 Field Jacket. It's become my most worn jacket. The lining is removable and best of all, I bought it brand new, complete with liner, from a surplus store for $45.
I have a Mountain Hardware parka and only use it a few times a year but boy is it worth it when you need to be outside for a few hours. Buy them in the early summer you save about 40% on a $700 jacket. Have a sherling bomber jacket and thats my favorite once they break in there's nothing better , just a cool nostalgic jacket. Only problem is the occasional smart ass that asks were you flew in from.
Personally I wear a speedwear trailmaster style jacket as its functional , waterproof and its made from 12 oz waxed canvas so it's durable enough. I wear it in autumn, spring and winter, summer I wear a beige denim jacket or denim vest.
Hey Carl! I haven't seen you mention my personal favorite of the work/chore coats, the Le Laboureur Wool Chore Coat. You should definitely check that one out!! It's pretty consistently under 200 bucks, and super thick wool, simple and pretty perfect for me
I purchased a Orvis waxed Montana Work Jacket and it checks all the boxes. I haven’t seen you review anything from Orvis (or I missed it) but their a great company.
I also got a cashmere long coat at a 2nd hand store...just like I did my babour...I'm bias but really if you have patience (or want to cultivate that virtue) only shop at thrift for everything other than base layers.

That's a bit more than four.
