tai chi actually isnt slow, the reason people do it slow is to train their balance and to perfect the movement, used at full speed it is a very VERY deadly style. it looks stupid when you watch the guys practice, but because they do it that way, when it comes the time to fight their muscle memory is instantaneous and precise.

Bringer, tai chi chu'an is what you're takling about, it's the MA/self-defense side of tai chi. When it's written as just tai chi, it refers to the moving meditation you've probably all seen being practiced. I know because I'm an MA guy, and so is my brother; who used to study tai chi chu'an.
That really is the problem with martial arts... you train with swords, sticks, soft mats and punching bags. Then end up in a real fight, on concrete, and discover that it actually hurts when you punch someone with a 6-pack... Except if you are lucky enough to end up in a fight with a sword strapped to your waist, but then you can also consider yoursdelf lucky for not being locked up in jail...
After doing Taekwondo for 6 years and reaching my 2 degree black belt. I respect anyone who puts the time and effort into any martial art. It’s hard work. I had to stop to do bad knees. Still have lots of respect.
