Such a beautiful pattern.....I learned this pattern in the early 80's and it was all hand sewn...I am going to have to try this way now...it is absolutely my favorite pattern!!!
Really enjoyed your video. Going to give it a try using Christmas scraps for my windows. I also have a huge bag of buttons that my late mother collected over the years. When she would look after the grandkids she would get them to help her sort them and string together ones that matched. Think I will add some of these buttons to the pillows. My girls will love it (they're now 36 & 41), to bring back memories of grandma. Also, had a thought, by using a beautiful satin material and making the windows without a coloured centered would make a very elegant looking pillow. Thank you, Merry Christmas from Ontario, Canada.
You are welcome! Happy that you enjoyed this tutorial! That is going to be gorgeous! They will love these pillows! We appreciate your support and comment! - Abby
I made a Cathedral Window quiLt once, it ended up being a pillow. You make it look so simple I may have to try again. It is so beautiful when you see a whole quilt made with this pattern.
I calculated it will take me 506 10 x 10 inch squares to make my king sized quilt! That’s not counting the colorful squares!! I may have to settle for a pillow too! 😉
I recently rediscovered sewing at age 53 (haven't sewn since my 20s) and am having a blast learning all kinds of crafts from your channel. In fact, I've had such success at the projects I've attempted, I am gaining confidence to plan to make a quilt! Thank you!
Hello! What a beautiful project! I'd love to have a whole bedding set in that pattern. My daughter and I are both learning and I'd like to thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. You make sewing fun! Have a Blessed day! ♡♡♡
@@ShabbyFabrics so I had a try. It turned out awful. Nothing to do with your tutorial. I am new to a sewing machine as well as patchwork. So I'm going to start with easier things. Squares. Denim with some lace on. Maybe a rag one. A cushion. I think I ran before I could walk.
I've been working on a Cathedral Windows quilt (queen). I clicked on this because I wanted to see how the pillow was done -- specifically how to attach the backing. Way more simple than I thought. Seams I was worried about nothing really. But making the windows in this "origami envelope" method is MUCH easier than the traditional method -- and faster. It is also much more accurate (for me). I haven't decided whether I will hand-stitch or machine-sew the windows open. As for the pillow, I will make an envelope style backing so the pillow form can be removed for washing the case (or replacing the pillow form itself). Thanks for the video.
Yay! We are happy to hear that you are going to give this an another try! If you have any questions along the way please let me know as I am always happy to help! -Kyla
Jen, what an excellent video to making cathedral quilt squares. I have to say, It makes me miss my grandmother. This was her favorite quilt to make. She hand sewed all of hers and one of her quilts she actually took and hand tied the centers instead of quilting. ;) We still have some of her pillows that she made. When I have time, I'm going to have to give this a try. Looks easy enough, but extremely time consuming, so I will have to set aside some time. LOL.... thanks again....
I'm so glad we could remind you of your grandmother's love of Cathedral Quilt Squares! Sounds like she was an amazing quilter :) those pillows of hers are such a treasure! Thanks for watching and taking time to comment - you will love working on this project!
OMG, so cool, going to try that later, especially as some new fabric arrived today. Love the magic pillowcase too. Thanks for uploading these tutorials, you make something that looks too complicated for me to make a lot easier with your instructions. Keep up the videos x
I have this going, but hand sewing. I find it more relaxing and can take it with me once I have the squares folded. I love the idea of the template for pressing the raw edge to start. I had not thought about that so it was aha moment. Thanks!
Also I do not sew the back and front and turn as you have shown. I sandwich them together and sew .25 seam and do a binding around like you would a quilt. This also gives you a chance to add some color accent binding.
After watching your video yesterday, I made this pillow. It took me 4 hours, but that includes time (about an hour) contemplating my fabric stash and doing the math to determine the larger square size needed to use smaller blocks. I used lite weight heat and bond to secure the smaller squares and triangles in place. Most of the labor for this is in the cutting and pressing (~2hrs). If you can edgestitch curves with some precision then you can sew this pillow too! Mine is supercute bright green solid with pinks and blues panes. I'll definitely be doing this again.
bought the pattern last week now watching makes me understand it more....tks for the tip on the glue pen going to buy one tomorrow....got your magazine going to order the bunny wall hanging pattern and the holder...tks again
We're so glad to hear that this video helped you understand the pattern better! That's definitely our goal when we do these. Also, so glad you enjoyed the catalog. That bunny wall hanging pattern is SO cute. Good choice!
I helped my grandmother make blocks for her quilt when I was 11. I've wanted one for my bed ever since. But I'd had a hard time finding sizes for the traditional squares & how to put it together. Thank you so much for this video! I'm starting mine July 4th.
Jen, Love all your videos. Your cheerful presentation brightens my day. I so wish, though, that you would either get an extension bed table for your machine or have someone cut a hole in your table to sink your machine in. Having a nice flat surface to sew on is so much easier. Trying to sew on the narrow machine bed causes lots of frustration. I sunk my machine years ago and I’ll never go back. Mwah!
Absolutely! You can post it on our Facebook page, send it in a message on Facebook, or post it on Instagram and tag us in it or use #ShabbyFabulous :) We are so excited to see your pillow!
Just beautiful! I have awesome ideas already of what I will be making very soon! I love your excitement in the videos to show as much as you can to ensure we get a clear picture that you seem to get out of breath! Shows true passion for what you do! Keep up the amazing videos! I have made two bags from one of your previous videos with the several strips of material. Not as great as yours but still can be used, lol!
Thank you so much for you thoughtful comment and for making our projects! Our first time making these projects doesn't usually look like the finished one either lol!
loved this tutorial and I was able to make the pillow in 2 nights (after baby was asleep). Will share at some point on Twitter or instagram! thanks again
That is awesome to hear that you were able to complete your pillow so quickly! It's amazing what moms can accomplish after baby is asleep :) We look forward to seeing your pillow on IG or Twitter!
It's definitely a labor of love, but it's so satisfying to get it all complete. This would be a gorgeous heirloom baby blanket! That's a great idea. - Morgan
Another amazing tutorial, I like to change my pillow's (in England we say cushions) but the same thing I like to change my pillows for the seasons (spring summer autumn (fall) winter) and this will be wonderful for having the colors of the 4 seasons and I'm thinking Christmas fabric and may be use your Christmas shabby shapes in one or two of the windows.
I dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost the login password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Wyatt Zain thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Thank you I’ve just come across this I’m going to make a “wedding ring pillow” for my daughter who is getting married in February 2021 - both her and her fiancé have Down Syndrome and I want to make it special for her
Hello, I just found this video, because I wanted to learn this technique, and I did! I made a make up bag for my cousin as a present, and hope she'll like it. Anyway, I would appreciate it if you could show all the steps more in detail. Like in the end, when you talked about closing the pillow, I wasn't quite sure, how thick my seam should be and so on. :) But the rest I really loved. Thank you.
That is so great to hear! Glad this tutorial was helpful for you! For closing your pillow, you will lay your cathedral window piece (pillow front) and your chosen backing fabric right sides together. You will then sew around the perimeter using a quarter inch seam allowance, leaving a four or five inch opening. Then, you will turn your pillow right-side-out and stuff with your desired filling. Once it is stuffed, you will use a whip stitch to sew the opening shut! Please let me know if you need any additional instructions :)
This is gorgeous , just beautiful. hard to remember the steps, I'd have to watch it closely and go step by step with you. Btw, I recently purchased some of your fabric line and it's just beautiful I must say!
this is great, I'm looking for something to use with skull bandannas for my grandson. This or attic windows but this is definitely going somewhere on my future Japanese quilt.
Hello! We sold out of the exact fabric used in this video a couple of years ago, but you can use precut 10" squares from a Layer Cake: www.shabbyfabrics.com/fabrics-precuts-layer-cakes-c443.aspx You will need nine 10" x 10" squares of the main fabric and two 10.5" x 13.5" rectangles for the backing. - Morgan
Thanks. Great options and possibilities. You did not mention a binding and I am thinking, no binding. Instead of cutting the half-squares for the edge, why not fold them under, sew them down along the outside and leave them like that? As long as the edge is not pulled and stressed in use, why would it come apart? So, thanks for the demonstration and sparking some ideas and possibilities.
If this was done as a quilt how would you quilt this? I love this project and want to do a quilt like this. I am going to start with a pillow first though. Love your welcome home collection and your tutorials. I have made totes, walker carry all, cross body bag, coasters and love to watch them over and over.
If this was done as a quilt you would treat the Cathedral Blocks just as you would a normal quilt top. You would complete the quilt top to your desired size then make a quilt sandwich (quilt top, batting, and backing) and quilt and finish as desired!
Jessica Beaudoin the traditional Cathedral Window guilt is not quilted. When you finish it the backing is already there. With all the folding and sewing, it is already thick. Backing, batting and quilting is not traditional on this quilt!
This is a great tutorial! Thank you very much for sharing this beautiful pattern. I would like to make a quilt using this method and wondering if I would join the entire quilt top origami prior to setting in the windows? I'm thinking that would be the case, however I would love to hear how you would approach it. Thank you again!!
Thank you! We are thrilled that you enjoy this delightful project and our fabric collection! While we no longer have kits available, you are able to find the Free Download for this project here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/235/how-to-make-a-cathedral-window-pillow 💖 -Michelle
I love this tutorial and pillow! My question is, if I want to use three fabrics, how would I put my inside fabric in the sandwich prior to sewing and adding my window? Thanks!
Hi Helen - It seems like we need a bit more information as to where/how you'd like to use the three fabrics you're referring to - this method does use 3 fabrics to create the cathedral window effect. Are you perhaps trying to showcase 3 fabrics on the inside of the window? Please let us know how we can best help answer your query. -Michelle
@@ShabbyFabrics Thank you for the quick reply. What I’m trying to do is make a table runner out of this pattern, so mine would be a rectangle. My question is would it be possible to use the white background and another color, in addition to the fabric in the window? This way the white fabric would be more of an accent . Do you have a cathedral window runner tutorial? I couldn’t find one. I’ve watched others but I like Jen’s version. I love the Shabby Fabric tutorials and I’ve learned a lot! Thank you!
To start, you should try out the cathedral window technique and go from there to figure out how many squares you will need for the size you are looking for :)
Such a beautiful pattern.....I learned this pattern in the early 80's and it was all hand sewn...I am going to have to try this way now...it is absolutely my favorite pattern!!!

Love the pattern. Something new to the. Off topic but do you prefer Singer sewing machines?
We don't have an absolute preference to a particular brand of sewing machine but we have found that Singer machines are VERY reliable!
Also a great way to use up scraps or repurpose clothes that cannot be upcycled.
You are so right!
Make it into a table runner using Christmas fabric or any of your favorites
That would be such a special table accent! Thanks for watching!

U made it look so easy
We're glad you like this project. Thanks for watching!! 💖 -Michelle
We're so glad we could inspire you!! Your idea is a great option-please let us know how that works for you!! Thanks for watching!! -Michelle
Lovely. Thank You!!

Thank you so much! It's so much fun to make, let us know if you give it a try! - Morgan
You would create the quilt to EXACTLY the same way as this pillow except there would be more squares :)
Beautiful 😍
Thank you so much!
Beautiful pattern and fabric! I wish it was still available! Can we make that happen??
Thank you!
Beautiful!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for your clear demo😇
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Can't wait to try this! Is there a specific type of thread to use?
We do have a neutral thread set on our website that we recommend for many of our projects! It would work really well with this pillow! ~Leah
I love this I want to make a laptop quilt for my son...Sports of course..Where do I start?
To start, you should try out the cathedral window technique and go from there to figure out how many squares you will need for the size you are looking for :)
