This is hysterical, i thoyi was the only one who took 40+ years to finish this quilt. I have most of it finished, but i warned my very talented daughter in law she will probably inherit it to finish for my daughter. It is all done by hand.
I was just gifted a cathedral window from my cousin, she doesn’t sew. I’m thankful to get it, my Great Grandmother started it at least 50 years ago, and it came with all the pieces to finish it. I know what my winter project will be.
My husband received a Cathedral Windows quilt from his uncle when his aunt passed. The quilt was made by the aunt's mother. It was all done by hand and even as an experienced sewer/quilter, I could not figure out how the blocks were created. It is 74"x84" and the colored fabrics are about 1.5" square. I searched and found your video, and WOW, what a process! It makes us appreciate what we have all the more. Your quilt is beautiful. Thank you souch for sharing the process!! ❤
I just finished my extra large king cathedral window quilt. I used your tutorial. It was a lot of work. It took 1 years and 9 months. To say the least, it will be my one and only.
I started a cathedral quilt in high school almost 50 years ago. Recently, while cleaning out my closet I pulled out materials and started it up again. I really appreciated this video and the version you used. I am now more motivated to finish my quilt. Thank you!
Oh my goodness, that is beautiful! The only quilt my mother ever mentioned wanting to make was cathedral window. Now I see why she never even started one. So much effort, but worth it.
BEAUTIFUL!!!! I am so glad I found this video! I have tried to make 2 cathedral windows and have quit each time. You just made everything click for me and gave me the short cuts I need. THANK YOU!!!!
Hi! Judy Hammack here. I live in Ardmore, OK. I just discovered your channel. While I love all kinds of crafts and have taught myself many of them, sewing is my all time favorite. Happy am 67 years old and have been sewing since I was 6-8 when my mother taught me on a Singer treadle machine. I am just getting into quilting. I have always wanted to do a cathedral window quilt. Watching this video has inspired me to want to proceed. However, I have so man projects that I need to finish first. I am as sitting at a table in my sewing room working on a diamond painting for my grandsons at 8:07 tonight. We are in a winter storm warning and have gotten quite a bit of sleet and are expecting snow tomorrow. We don’t have this cold very often. Pretty cold at wind chill of around 21. Not as bad as further north, but that is why we live in south central Ok. Loved the video. Your quilt is absolutely stunningly gorgeous!!!!!
This is STUNNING!!!!! I promised my husband’s grandmother that I would make a cathedral window quilt one day. I’ve made two baby quilts; one, completely by hand for my niece, and one, by machine for my great niece. I’ve always wanted to make one for myself…you have inspired me to try. Thank you!!!
Thank you for the kind words Bev💛 They have it on display in the main part of their house....everytime I go over there-I gush with pride....so accomplishing 💛
Wow! What a beautiful quilt. I have wanted to make a cathedral window quilt for a long time but didn't want to do all the hand sewing. Your tutorial is brilliant. Adding this to my list of future projects. Thank you thank you for sharing! ❤
I remember my grandmother doing one of these by hand in the early 1970s. If I'm not mistaken, my mothers oldest sister got it after Gran died. Every sibling got a quilt and as I was the first grandchild to marry, she made me a "trip around the world" for my wedding present. It was the last quilt she made before she passed away.
*_Thank you for sharing Gidget...it still amazes me how cotton and thread when sewn together has so much memory and love within it. What a great legacy to be handed down...💛_*
Tracy, you’re a cathedral window genius!! I just finished watching your tutorial on how you made this quilt! This was Sew Simple!! I’m going to challenge myself to make one using your tutorial and technique. I will make either a lap quilt, wall hanging, or throw. Bravo Tracy, Bravo!! 💜
This is the third time I’ve watched this video. Tracy I have to say… this is the most beautiful cathedral window quilt I have seen!! I watched quite a few videos on them too! Love the way you stuffed those. And I love that you used your machine! I think everyone hand stitching was holding me back from making one. Im ready to start my 10 year quilt now LOL ❤ ty ty ty!!
I remember my great aunt sewing these by hand, and I thought they were so beautiful and that one day I would like to make one. She would sit and sew these little pieces by hand while she watched her “story” on tv, (soap opera). I have never seen one done on a machine like that but it looks as though it would be much faster. I know that she worked on hers for years. I believe she made one for her son and one for her daughter. I enjoyed watching this and if I get the nerve I will consider making some for my grandchildren! Better get started huh? 😂 I already completed a quilt that my grandmother started for me and never finished, it now belongs to my first granddaughter. It’s a Sun Bonnet Sue, and I made it from the leftover unfinished squares and added in newer blocks doing my best to try and match her hand embroidery on the bonnets. It was a true labor of love but I swore I’d never do it again as it was the first quilt I had ever made! This video has me rethinking that. Thanks so much for making such a complex thing look doable!
This is your opus... your masterpiece... if you will... stunning...just jaw dropping. The work in this. OMG... My Mother always says you can tell how much someone loves you by the quilt they make for you... Looks like its infinite right here. I would to see what your daughter says about this work of art. she probably is gonna cry. I would. Thanks for sharing.
*_Thank you Kelly for your kind words......My daughter actually came over earlier today when I was trying to finish this video.....She wanted to take it home today (I told her to hold off a bit longer just in case I needed to film anymore for the video.) She is anxiously waiting to have it all for her and her family💟_*
What an amazing quilt! 🩷Beautiful job! What a keepsake this will be. Your way is different than I learned, but I like that it is backed and quilted as you go. 😊Thank you for sharing your experience.
Hi,Tracy I finally finish my cathedral window quilt it took me eight months, thanks to you Tracy with your video tutorial step by step made easy for me to quilt this beautiful quilt and now I'm working on another cathedral window quilt a black multi-color solid color quilt also I started this quilt in May 15, 2023 this month
Gorgeous! My friend started her cathedral window quilt the same time I started a star quilt for my son....about 25 years ago. She just finished hers so that means I need to finish mine.
What a wonderful job you did, congratulations for completing it. I have been inspired by you to make my Granddaughters one each. At the time of commenting I have about a month for the eldest Granddaughter's birthday. I better get started. Thank you again. I truly love your quilt.
Super congratulations. We're all happy but Tracy is the happiest. Who said beautiful work comes easy. I hope your daughter and son in law enjoy sunshine through the windows of this quilt for a very very long time together ❤
You just made my life so much easier!! I learned from a video where you had to edge it on a cardboard and iron iron and iron. I never could get the centers perfect so I always had to sew on buttons. They always turned out beautiful, but such a lengthy process. I make memory cathedral pillows quite often, so this is a life/timesaver! Thank you so much. ❤
At first I was like no no no but I finished watching and was so very impressed. It really is gorgeous and not as hard as I thought. Then boom like you said your done. I’m sure I love it. I love it great job.
Hi Tracy, I am in total awe of Your Amazing Accomplishment-This Quilt is absolutely Gorgeous and Your Daughter and Son in Law are so Blessed to have a Mom who persevered to complete this quilt!I love ❤ that You added the poly-fil to give it even more dimension, Genius! I appreciate so much that You've offered this tutorial, I would probably never make a quilt that large but I certainly will attempt a lap quilt or a lovely accent pillow! Thank You so much!
Thank you Marie for all of your kind feedback💛 This one was a true labor of love quilt for me💛 My daughter and son in law are so appreciative of it too...They actually display this quilt in their living room on a quilt rack for all to see ❤️
I can't believe I have missed this video for 2 years. Your's is so beautiful! It's the "puff" that makes it extra special. This is definitely going on my bucket list! I just need a couple bolts of white fabric to get started. My oldest grandson is 12. Maybe I can get it finished in time for his wedding 😊
Shabby Fabrics has a video on making Cathedral Window Ornaments. Nice looking, they look like little stuffed pillow hanging from the tree. I made several as gifts last year. Of course after this quilt you may want to lay off of making these for a while LOL.
I had faith that you would finish it and you did! Congratulations! It's a glorious testimony of your love for your daughter. That quilt is part of your life's legacy and will be treasured for generations. Thank you for sharing your journey with us; an inspiration to all. Best wishes to your daughter and son-in-law. Also, I love the Bible reference you added.
*_Thank you so much Laura💟 I wondered if anyone would notice the verse✝️Thanks for pointing that out- That quilt is a legacy for sure...thank you for the kind words!💟_*
@@TheSewingChannel You're welcome! I'm so happy for you and your daughter. I loved seeing the Bible passage and Mark 10:6-9 is the perfect verse for a wedding quilt. I am reminded also of Romans 1:16.
My grandmother made a cathedral quilt for me when I got married. It was all hand sewn❤️. The windows in mine are 1” so I guess she cut 1 1/2” blocks of print fabrics. Thank you so much for sharing!
Well done. You have great discipline. Your quilt is stunningly beautiful. I remember seeing this quilt with the edges not sewn shut, the high thread count cotton freyed as with washing or pulling threads on napkins. The white fabric made a soft frame for the many colored pieces Including velvets & satins.
❤❤❤ Tracy ❤❤❤ This tutorial for Cathedral Window Quilt is the best I've found. I'll break it up like you did and chain sew the backing/framing fabric construction and then join in sets of 6. I don’t want my picture fabric to fray, so I will only cut small batches at a time. I'm so excited. My grandies are 11yrs and 13yrs so I have a little more time than you had 😂😂😂❤❤❤😂😂😂 Even if they don't want the quilts I would have made a great achievement and I can always sell them. But I have wanted to make Cathedral Windows forever! 🎉
@@TheSewingChannel - As I'm reading this, I guess I'm the third to notice the very appropriate it was to use that Scripture verse. I think all quilts made for wedding gifts should have this inscribed - making the gift of love that much more meaningful as well as honoring God in the construction of it, gifting it, using it, and cherishing it's significance. Thank you for blessing my life in what you've done her. And ... how fortunate you are to have a husband who values the meaning of that verse to also suggest it. May God bless your marriage as well as your daughter and her new husband.
Who knew a "Quilt As You Go" quilt (😉) could be so absolutely gorgeous? I imagine from now on you'll think of all your quilts as BCW and ACW. What an amazing accomplishment you've achieved. Every stitch sewn to make each completed block is another indication of your love for your daughter and her husband.
*_LOL newbeequilter! I sat here for at least 5 min trying to figure out what BCW and ACW meant! and then the lightbulb went off LOL- BEFORE cathedral window and AFTER cathedral window! Thanks for making my brain work tonight! lol And thank you for all of the kind words💙_*
I LOVE that you put polyfil in the windows. It just gives it so much more dimension. This really has inspired me to make this my next "labor of love" quilt!!
@@TheSewingChannel my fabric just came today. I'm bracing myself!! I made a practice pillow cover for my sister last night, with just 15 blocks and it came out way better than I thought I would, but a whole bed quilt compared to a pillow covering is like apples and oranges sometimes. thanks, again, for the video!!
Love the short cuts. I started a cathedral window quilt when my daughter had a twin bed ... only used machine for the white pieces putting them together, sewing on in long strips, then hand sewed all the squares in. She then went to a Full sized bed before I finished, so I added more rows of the white muslin and kept adding squares. She has now moved in with her boyfriend, so I need to add some more strips of muslin. I’m keeping this pink, light blue and lavender, and kind of try for a pattern, changing with every edge. It definitely pays to get all the muslin at once, but as I said, I keep having to alter the size, LOL, so I have a few squares of “white” muslin that aren’t exactly the same color of white. Thank you for sharing
*_Hi Collette....I had same issue with the white not matching on this quilt....I made sure It was the same barcode number/ color of white but since it wasn't from the same bolt- it didn't match perfectly. I think I'm the only one that can tell though. That's wonderful that you keep adding on to the quilt as the situation changes 💟_*
@@TheSewingChannel How is that polyfil going through the wash? Does it get lumpy and shift around? I was thinking you could cut out a square of batting and just lay it underneath your center fabric, and it would be stitched in place. I may try that.
BeAuTIFuL instruction!! Exactly what one needs to successfully complete a cathedral window quilt! Thanks so much for the time and effort it took for you to share with others. Blessings to you and your family.
that is incredible! I love the sewing machine method because I hate hand sewing too. most of the videos I've seen involved hand sewing which puts it out of reach for me

I LOVE that you put polyfil in the windows. It just gives it so much more dimension. This really has inspired me to make this my next "labor of love" quilt!!
*_Go for it Samantha! and you aint lyin'......A TRUE labor of LOVE!!!!LOL😂_*
Oh my word! Kudos for you for making this quilt. I have done smaller cathedral window projects but nothing on this scale.
BEAUTIFUL. I also have one, my Mother made it years ago. She hand stitched almost all of it. It fits my queen size bed in our motorhome.
I absolutely love this! I will be making this one!
So beautiful!! I'm so glad you finished it. It will be treasured for years to come.
Thank you Linda♥️
Love it. I have watched several times.
Glad you enjoy it Nani!💛
This is really an ingenious way of doing it! Thank you for your tutorial! I will have to try this. So glad you finished your quilt!
Glad it was helpful Padma💛 Thank you for the kind feedback too💛
@@TheSewingChannel How is that polyfil going through the wash? Does it get lumpy and shift around? I was thinking you could cut out a square of batting and just lay it underneath your center fabric, and it would be stitched in place. I may try that.
The amount is so tiny....just a pinch so it does nothing.✅
BeAuTIFuL instruction!! Exactly what one needs to successfully complete a cathedral window quilt! Thanks so much for the time and effort it took for you to share with others. Blessings to you and your family.
Thank you so much for this tutorial!
This is gorgeous !
that is incredible! I love the sewing machine method because I hate hand sewing too. most of the videos I've seen involved hand sewing which puts it out of reach for me
Beautiful work. Thank you for the tutorial. So much work!!
