  • Eastern Screech-Owls (Megascops asio) are common owls of eastern North America. They can be found almost anywhere (as long as there are trees) east of the Rocky Mountains, in northeastern Mexico and in some parts of southern Canada. West of the Rocky Mountains they are replaced by the very similar Western Screech-Owl (Megascops kennicottii).
Eastern Screech-Owls have two different color morphs: red (about one third of the birds) and gray (about two thirds of the birds). Although a common bird, they are easily overlooked. Their nighttime behavior makes them less likely to be seen, but they are so well camouflaged that even on daytime roosts they can be very hard to see.
This bird was roosting in a city park in Illinois and did not seem to be bothered by people in the area. Dogs barking did make the bird more aware however.
