  • Northern Wheatears (Oenanthe oenanthe) are mostly found as breeding birds in Europe and Asia, with a tiny portion of the species breeding in Alaska and Eastern Canada. Northern Wheatears are long distance migrants that winter in Africa. For birds breeding in Alaska their migration route to Africa is close to an incredible 14000+ kilometers (9000 miles). Twice a year, for a bird weighing about 1 ounce (28 grams)!
The name Wheatear is believed to come from the old English, meaning White Arse, because of the white rump they display often.
