A lot of people nowadays simply don't have cars, at least in my world. If you want a big light duty vehicle/truck, it might as well be one with more than just a single cab bench seat that seats three in claustrophobia. Especially because all the naysayers of light duty truck like vehicles have all gone away specifically because of the undeniable success of the Highlander and the pilot. Tacomas are great, but I am a computer technician and a gamer, not a rock crawler, but I also like wondering off into the woods so I can't get a minivan.
It is absolutely incredible Honda STILL uses a rubber timing belt in an interference engine. My sister had one break on hers and it wasn't the same after that. GREAT VIDEO!
I have a 2010 that my son has for his family. Bought it used from a private seller. Have kept it maintained. My mileage was between 19-21 mpg. Will keep it till it dies!
On Modern engines (which suck to begin with), oil changes are EVERYTHING. Many if not all use oil pressure for synchronizers, variable timing, timing chain tensioners, and cam phasers.... Dirty and thermally broken down oil will turn these engines into boat ⚓'s in a HEARTBEAT. Don't listen to your friend.
Just bought a 2015 with 120k miles on it. Love the car and runs like a dream. Meets a need that Toyota doesnt for size. Good luck trying to find any mechanic that will disable the VCM system though.
Scotty, I happen to Love my 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road. And because of my age it will be the last pickup I’ll ever own. When my wife’s Outback wears out we’ll replace it with a Lexus NX 350h hybrid.
We've got a 2011 EX-L with a measly 83K miles on it. Proactively changed the timing belt and water pump earlier this year making that the largest maintenance/repair expense we've had on the car in going on 14 years.
I had that engine and it would foul spark plugs like it's job - put 6 new plugs in it and traded it in and got great money for the car on trade in, now it's someone else's problem!!!
Honestly, 95% of manufacturers use timing belts. Honda is no exception. There’s only a few good reliable vehicles out there that actually use timing chains 4runner, etc..
I bought a used 2011 Pilot 7 years ago with 120K miles. Now at 210K miles and it is still a great car. I have had to replace the brakes twice because the front right seems to have an issue with the slide pins. The AC expansion valve had to be replaced but I had the shop do that (I am not as flexible as I used to be getting under the dash). I change the oil more often than the car wants me to and I change the transmission fluid with every other oil change. Still a good car and I hope to keep it to at least 300K miles or until Honda gets their act together from all the recent recalls/issues.
In the 90's my father in law had a Cadillac with the cylinders that turned off to "get better gas mileage" what a pile of JUNK! It was ALWAYS at the dealership until he finally BLEW the motor before the warranty was up. Next one he got the NorthStar V8 that overheated and blew up in like 3 months! He finally gave up and bought a Lexus...🤣🤣🤣
I have a 2009 Accord with the 3.5 V-6. It has used oil since it was new. Has even fouled #1 plug a few times in its 200,000 miles. Original timing belt a water pump. Doubt if the car is worth much more than the belt and pump change bill!
Rubber timing belt means money saved by the manufacturer which costs us more money down the road, if you replace it at the intervals called for it, if you keep it long enough. The metal timing chains have to be replaced but not as often.
. Great job Scotty for explaining all the ups and downs of this vehicle. Very useful information. It would be nice to know about what to do with any vehicle before buying. Honda pilot. One of the ugliest SUVs
Hondas probably drive better than Toyota's, but I will take Toyota over Honda everytime, because they are little more reliable and lower maintenance cost
Agreed! I’ve wrenched on both & modified after the warranty expired, but cars are just to get us from point A to point B in relative comfort at the lowest costs.
Have you ever noticed when Scotty finds a code on a Toyota, Honda or Lexus its just a squirrly code and it doesn't matter he says, but if he finds a code on a GM, Kia, Hyundai or any other brand its a major problem and the vehicle is junk, i take his advice with a pinch of salt.
I need help my engine light is on and I would like to have a machine to test it myself not too expensive which one would you recommend please and thank you
Hello Scotty, I enjoy the content. I got a 2025 Honda pilot, with the lowest level trim. It has a back up camera but I want to have the 360 camera installed. This would be an after market purchase. Is there a specific one you would recommend and do you recommend going to the dealer or my trusted mechanic? Thanks

The VCM on my 2015 Honda Odyssey is awesome. Best MPG I got going to work was 36 mpg, but if you throw on the cruise control at 70 mph, you get what it's rated for (29 mpg highway), which is great. They figured it was way easier to exploit consumers with a few high end vehicles than many base models. Welcome to the future of exploitation.
Seems like a lot of people can afford them.

My Toyota 310k runs like new
What about carbon buildup on the intake valves because it’s direct injection?
Looks like Scotty has lost his love for Toyota lately. How long before he recommends a Kia over a Toyota?
No chance . . . He'll be recommending FIAT first.
hyundai n kia good, make n sell lots of vehicles, n giving toyota, honda, etc. a good run for their money.
Those 2012s were nice model years
I own Toyotas, but am mildly envious of Scotty’s OBDII reader.
Support Elon! He and Trump support electric 🇺🇸
"Don't buy Toyota"?! Who are you and what have you done with Scotty?!
Shame they don’t sell them in the uk 🇬🇧
As long as you can buy a Fiat mate.
