House brand knockoffs are huge in the US, but they never get this close. Trademark law is serious business here.

The thing is, Frosted Flakes is the original American name for the cereal known as Frosties in Ireland. So creating an off-brand cereal called Frosted Flakes is actually a genius move. I applaud that level of minimal effort.

Aldi called. They want their trade secrets back please.
Aldi Netherlands has transcended this, they now have their own brands whose names are puns. Unfortunately they don't translate well, so I can't really give examples, but it works like this. A certain manufacturer had witches' cheese (Heksenkaas) on the market, Aldi then came up with Old Crone cheese (Witte Wievenkaas).
Legal action followed (the Witches Cheese manufacturer had apparently never heard of the Streisand Effect) which was a lot of free advertising for Aldi. It ended up before the European Court of Justice and Aldi won.
In Dutch we haven expressions like Helaas Pindakaas (meaning thats a pitty, litterary, Allas, Peanutbutter) So Aldi has Heleas Pindakaas as a peanutbutter brand. Also Koek en Bakker (Cake and Baker) as a brand for gingerbread and cookies. A Koekenbakker is an expression for someone who is a bit daft or cuckoo.

The one that gets me most is one of the supermarket's own brand period pads is called Siempre, which is just Spanish for Always.

This just broke me for some reason.
Might add the Oreos part was unintentionally funny to me as Oreos were literally a store imitation of cookie called Hydrox. Oreos ended up winning out despite being completely unoriginal and just a whole sale copy.

The correct answer is "it depends". Sometimes it's literally the same product from the same production line in the same company just with a different package. Sometimes it's a slightly changed recipe even though it comes from the same factory. And sometimes it's really a substitute product by someone else.
The irony of Oreos being featured in this video is that Oreos themselves were once one of the imitator brands, to the Hydrox cookie.

Fun fact most of these come out of the same factories. Someone in the uk opened their 6 pack of HOOPS to find hula hoop packets inside due to a mix up in the factory and dopes still pay a fortune for the exact same thing in different packaging
I remember when I switched from Aldi Krispy Rice to actual Rice Krispies. Krispy Rice tastes like toenails while Rice Krispies are lovely.

Well here in Sweden Ica has their own brand and one of the products is hyperbolic paraboloid shaped chips in cylinder cans where the light green are sourcream & onion and the red are salty...
They are usually placed Riiight next to the pringles.

Everyone is always going to assume that the brand which is more famous and since they've heard of it first, that was the original one. It is quite common that the bigger company would take the idea from the smaller company knowing that they would bankrupt the smaller company through legal fee's if they tried bring it to court.
