Best comment I saw was "you can take the boys out of buzzfeed but you can't take the buzzfeed out of the boys"
The idea that 6 buckaroos a month is affordable to anyone seems to be predicated off the idea that it's the ONLY sub a person would have which is oblivious at best.
6 dollars a month. How do you have hours to watch them and not 6 dollars a month...I don't know what are you doing with your life where you have hours of time to watch Watcher and not 6 dollars for the content that you're watching.
@@singithi8556 I watch videos from about 40 or so channels on a monthly basis. If I had to pay $6 for each of these, I'd be paying $240 a month, which would be utterly ridiculous. S what makes their channel specifically so special, that they'd deserve a sub, where nobody else is? Nothing. "Oh, but TV quality production and a crew of like 20" I don't care. If you want to make a TV show, pitch your show to TV channels. You choose to do TH-cam, then adapt to TH-cam standards. This is like wondering why your 5 star luxury restaurant doesn't work out... when you built it in the hood, sandwiched between two dirt cheap fast food joints.
@@singithi8556 How did you miss their point entirely?
@@robr135 its a pasta
@@robr135 I think he's referencing that streamer who got a ton of flak for yelling at her chat because no one subscribed in the last hour and she went on a rant like that. "How do you have hours to watch and not 2 dollars!?"

@@nabelias8991 You always fly right up until it burns
This reminds of that one time the React Bros tried to copyright the term React
They never recovered from that controversy, that and racism accusations; Fine Bros are irrelevant now.
bruh, they used to be everywhere. I haven't seen any of their stuff recently other than those tiktoks of the ex-reactors, about how they basically editted them to suit their narrative, making some seem so dumb so comments roasts them and so. also that one girl that literally had a website that counted down until she was 18... oof.
Yall are right, but there was also quite a lot of what seems like grooming to me 🤢
Apples to oranges. Not even remotely close
This situation isn't really analogous.
I'd like to point out that RoosterTeeth did this exact same thing years back and it backfired horribly. They stopped hosting a lot of their best shows on TH-cam when previously TH-cam was where EVERYTHING they produced was released, in an attempt to funnel people to their barely-functional website and to get people to pay for memberships so they could actually see the shows when they're originally released.
And look where they are now.
I was thinking isn't RT the perfect cautionary tale against doing this exact thing? I'd say it's worse in this case because they're abandoning YT entirely, which is their main audience. No thought went into this decision.
Rooster Teeth was closed down as of a week or two ago.
They did this out of already losing profits, but that speed up the process. After Monty died, volume 4 wasn't so good, especially when compared to volume 3. Then you add the lack of fighting scenes, lack of effort in the show to try new ones, and forcing stuff into it for the sake of politics, even forcing bumble bee to be as thing even though it was originally uncertain of it would and Monty wanted to just kind of see where things went and if it happened organically or not, couple that with plot holes being created in the same paragraph of someone talking... It was clear the whole show was just being forced and they only had a few good ideas pop up. Money also had some words in his writing, but no where as many, such as semblance is activated by the user or it only activates when a person is in danger of dying, or it can't be used when their aura is broken, but it is stronger at the risk to the user if the user forces it, but don't forget they don't have magic but dust allows them to use magic, dust is volatile but it's also safe to put into weapons and be attacked directly. They really needed to sit down and figure out the story way ahead of the writing and keep a list of rules.
But you can see how these changes on how they worked ruined their franchises like Red vs Blue, Camp Camp, and hindered some of there new shows that had a rough start, like the mech armor one I forget the name to.

"There Ain't No Freedom For No One In This Country No More"
Ya can’t fight gravity, son
It's not just greed in this case, it's logistical ignorance. Again, these guys were built off the back of free money from venture capitalists. They never understood how to make a profit to offset their costs. They're used to spending big money.

Your head
It's more like pride. Greed isn't automatically a bad thing, it's prideful or destructive greed that's the problem.
They didn't heed the warning of those calling, "Careful, Icarus."
Remember everyone. Darkcookie, the team behind the summertime saga porn visual novel makes over 70k a month off patreon subs. Last major game update was over a year ago
Early access H games seem like an infinite money glitch. I've seen several like that which either took the money and ran or do like one small update a year to keep people hopeful. Its ridiculous but apparently it works. I guess you could say that it pays to "milk" the coomers.
It's crazy that RoosterTeeth DID THIS ALREADY. It was Horrible, a waste of money/effort and did not save the company. If anything, it doomed them. I love Puppet History but i am not paying a subscription for a series that is very rare to get an episode. It's a shame
roosterteeth did it and it worked for like 15 years what are you on about
I'm just glad that people will stop sponsoring their content and support other competent TH-camrs like Smug Snow Fox.
It worked so well for RoosterTeeth.
It worked amazingly for dropout TV and that's not sarcasm
It kinda did though. RT had their site when they were in their prime and made mountains of new content and fucking movies and shit. Their downfall was general mismanagement like hiring all the wrong people.
@@MichaelAruba rooster teeths downfall was just content sinking in quality. If the content was still good it would be doing fine.
it did
@@Donovarkhallum Yeah but the quality fell because their management sucked. They couldn't hold on to their talent and hired a bunch of incompetent staff. Bad management snowballed into rushed/low quality shows and a general disconnect from their audience.
This is the Male Version of "IT's ONLY 5 Dollars."
5(.99)! Dollars! A month!
They want to become the next HBO so bad. People didn't watch them for some "TV quality" experience, but would be happy with the two of the hosts just doing random things, even if it was filmed on an iPhone. $6/month is also half the price of a Netflix subscription, and Netflix has thousand times the content they do. $6/Year would had been more reasonable, if they really had to go this route, or join Nebula or something. Every YT channel having their own subscription is the hellscape.
Running a TH-cam channel has way lower overhead costs than most other businesses. Google hosts the videos, and it's all digital, so editing and such can be done from home, so no need for any office spaces either. But no, they have 25 employees(and about to hire more), and the credits for that announcement video had 15 people in it, with titles like "Art director, Archival Editing Assistant." And two "Directors of Photography." There's no reason a TH-cam ghost hunting/video essay/Podcast type channel needs all that.
Holy shit, I'd've thought they'd only have 10 employees at most. Fair enough to have a set designer or something, on top of 3 crew on set and someone editing and designing thumbnails (you'd have 7 or 8 people at that point).
But nearly 40 people? I guess they learned all the wrong lessons from working at Buzzfeed.
I think rather than the next HBO they want to be Dropout, the former college humor. After Dropout launched they have seen a steady increase in popularity every year. Not to mention Dropout has received praise from viewer base and people in the industry alike.
You can see it on the release first episode for free which is something Dropout does for every season of Dimension 20.
Thing is with Dropout, they put a ton of older episodes out for free, constantly post clips and they don't do ads
@@I_Stole_A_BTR-80 In the description of that "goodbye video" they list the credits, and they have 5 different producers and 3 directors with an additional assistant director... Maybe they are giving a job to all of their friends and family, which would explain some of this, but would also make downsizing that much more awkward.
You know literally nothing about production value or overhead costs
@@Donovarkhallum Please educate me then. Or is your extensive knowledge of the subject matter more of a vibe you cannot put into words?
Changing platforms for their own reasons is a bad idea. That forces users to change their habits for no good reason. One of the worst things you can do to a customer is ask them to change their habits.
Such a damn shame, I was rooting for them when they left BuzzFeed and created their own channel...
I couldn't even watch that video they posted, announcing their departure from TH-cam, underestimating how much the TH-cam algorithm has carried their relevancy.
I kind of see it several times from smaller TH-cam channels who do nothing but make free audio books but then move them to patreon because some jackass individual or company constantly striking down their videos as they constantly break terms of service and the fair use act just to get the videos to be taken down.
Corpos have gotten greedy AF
This is a terrible idea in general let alone with inflation as bad as it is right now.
Piracy is gonna make a massive comeback, these subscriptions have gotten out of control.
TIL 3 talking heads are now the equivalent of a corporate behemoth. 'Corpo' seemingly means anything these days.
These guys left the corpo, BuzzFeed, and while they clearly have kept some shitty practices, they are not a corpo.
Markiplier, Jontron and AVGN is an example of doing good quality videos for free
Maybe not AVGN. He really struggles to make ends meet and he really should be in a better financial state given how long he's been at the game.
And Mark works on new stuff that people have to pay for but doesn't remove and tries not to reduce the regular free content.
@@OdaSwifteye too be fair he makes 1 video a month now if that
It's baffling that one can be so privileged to say 6 USD is affordable to anyone. Either they do not know the actual meaning of "affordable" or the PR was just extremely bad.
Honestly, it is still just greed. But as Charlie said, if the service actually has perks but doesn't take away from the "free" option is how it could work. Make it have extended cuts, exclusive content, uncensored takes, community events, etc.
Basically gotta make it actually have stuff to make it a service that's worth it.
Trying their own version of rooster teeth first, where they put the first episode free on TH-cam and the rest on the site.
I started opting out of any software or content that changed to subscription format ages ago, need to stop letting the companies profit via bad practices just because computer says line on chart goes up.
Had never heard of this lot before but seems like high production value low quality content they are getting too much credit for tbh.
Don't they realize they have a viewerbase because people watch YT because it's free? That's why YT is doing so well and it's almost purely based off the fact YT is free and doesn't cost what it would for cable, some other sub service, etc. That's the beauty of it.
Also, props to the person in Alana's chat who mentioned Crunchyroll and forgetting subs, i just remembered to cancel mine after like a year of forgetting i was paying for it.

I'm only used to watch the other two guys on buzzfeed unsolved, not so much of the third guy. Sad to see they went this route.
@peartry the third guy the asian looking one is a part of buzzfeed series " Is it worth it? " where they compare a 5$ burger to a 1000$ dollar burger that has gold edible shavings lol

This is roosterteeth all over again.
TH-cam offers so many ways to make money nowadays aside from patreon. Membership, superchats during live streams, etc.
Aren't there already a few subscription services made by youtubers, like Nebula? If they put their videos on a website like that a subscription would be way more worthwhile for the viewer! (especially considering a Nebula subscription is cheaper than their subscription)
Its the fault of the dude on the left steven hes the ceo of the company and was literally just the other two guys friend who promised to do the fincial stuff for them.
he hosts his own cooking shows based around the most expensive food on earth covered in gold leaf which despite being the most expensive of the whole channels videos gets the least amount of views.
I said this when Asmongold went over this Why can't these content creators upload their stuff to TH-cam at a later time just like what the people behind Sesame Street do with their show's broadcasts on both HBO and PBS. They broadcast the show on HBO first and then PBS does the broadcast at a later date. Also other content creators videos early on their Patreon and then about a week or 2 later they upload the same video to TH-cam.

I could live comfy for 3k a month, even 2k would easily livable. Their greed is just insane to me.
they need to be able to afford their yachts, 5 supercars, 12 mansions, and 5-star chef prepared daily meals of course
they make at min 25k per month not including YT revenue , the greediness is crazy
I'd like to point out that if we go by the *LOWEST* estimates they're making over 1 million a year, so yeah these morons are extremely greedy.
"These guy are making thousands of dollars a month! "
Yes, but they're not making _all_ of the dollars. That's money left on the table that _could_ be in their bank account.
Greed ruins creativity.
It feels like their buddy Steven got greedy and talked them into it, RIP Watcher, honestly I miss the original low cost content more. It was Ryan and Shane being Ryan and Shane.
Let's not forget that most of these subscription based services keep going up and up in price as well. What starts out as $6 eventually turns into $12.
It's just greed plain and simple. It's also just sad because they have a successful channel, patreon, ads/sponsors, and merch sales that most content creators can only dream of having.
They make millions a year and are trying to get the last pennies possible from your pocket. Pure greed.
Sink the yacht! Sink the yacht! Sink the yacht!
They're not just clowns, they're the entire circus.
Never heard of them ...
These people seem to also forget just how valuable a presence on TH-cam is in terms of sheer convenience for the audience and for them. They got big through solid content but youtube is what helped them be seen and people shared their videos all around to further encourage growth. Why would you leave this site just for your own subscription based website? Who's ment to discover them as people come and go in terms of interests?
They're so out of touch for no good reason what so ever.
They have "offices" to fund editors to pay and we watched them back when they had a shaky cam and were struggling under Buzzfeed's iron thumb of pushing this style of content in under 3 months of recording and sending out seasonally
I love your content. You're ridiculously smart, but laid back enough to make a comfy environment. You're not even afraid to laugh at yourself when you make a mistake. I wish I had friends like you irl.
never heard of them, but there a many millionair rappers I have never heard of as well
And they all sound the same as the next.
The last company I remember doing this was rooster teeth 😅
It’s just greed, plain and simple.
this is why i love dvds you can just make a one time purchase and as long as you take good care of it you have it forever
In my country the average wages is like 350 ~ 500 usd. 5.99 for a subscription is a lot 😂😂
TH-camrs paywalling their content. How can you be this clueless about your core success?!
Another Buzzfeed lounched channel with a controversy? Ok
Dropout TV TH-cam channel did the same thing which makes me so sad because I loved their shows.
To note about the back end of these guys. These guys were used to making videos without worrying about making profit. They were from Buzzfeed, which was fueled up by investment from venture capitalists, meaning that they kept being fed free money with the hope that eventually they would become big enough to be profitable. It never happened. Two years ago Buzzfeed tried to sell into the public stock market and they failed horribly, and venture capitalists pulled out.
These guys never had the struggle of building up. They never learned the logistics of business on TH-cam or on producing videos. They got to go spend the high dollars for the high product value even if the majority of their content was unknown or bombed and only got a few shows that actually blew big. They only know the shotgun way of hitting a bull's eye and their farewell video showcased that in stride. They knew nothing of how their business worked, how to make a profit, and they just chased an idea without understanding exactly how that idea works in real life.
Never ask Chat. 😅
For example 5.99 in the Philippines is a much larger amount of money for them with their currency
This is business. Studied this and there are so many techniques that business do to take their customers up their value ladder (ex. Free to low offer 5.99 to a higher offer Maybe like a course or something to something even higher or even a high subscription service like coaching, you kick those that would not pay you ever but keep those high quality leads and customers that are able and willing to pay you because the value that you provide to them in their heads is worth it.
all they had to do is to say that episodes will be paid content for a few days and no one would have cared. That way they had the cloud the videos create and a growing website with people that gladly pay and only once they have enough of those they can go paid only.
i watched worth it food since s01. Andrew, as far as i can tell, remained humble. but looking back you can see the ego of steven balloon beyond reason.
and now its popped.
Not exactly the same thing, but the "out of touch-ness" of those guys reminded me a bit of the whole Fine Bros 'React World' drama :')
Ah yes, the destiny 2 strategy.
They quite literally killed their own golden goose at it's prime.
As the saying goes mutch wants more. Humble bigger tubers and such you can count on one hand sadly, greed is a bitch
It's nice to see alana isn't good at math. Makes her feel real
"No annual discout" there's some inverse woman-math going on
In a market as saturated as TH-cam content, assuming yours is worth more than anyone else's to the point that people who currently consume it will pay to do so when there's comparable content for free is fairly bold.
XD But Alana, everyone knows RPM means Revolutions per Manifesto
The average income in Vietnam is 170$ to 430$ usd a month so 6$ would be a lot
59.99 annual is discounted, non discounted would be 71.88, if the annual isn't a little more than 10months, which then means it isn't annual. the discount is 11.89, which is almost 2months. So they do have a discount.
The ones i could say work is dropout and corridor crew they have free stuff on youtube but also bts and full stuff over their websites
Lana's math aint mathing 😆😆😆
The amount and quality of content has to match the price, if it doesn't then don't waste money.
I pay for TH-cam Premium, and I know it's $14 a month vs $7 a month but I get so much more content on youtube than I would moving to another website for comparably so little content.
Plus, no ads. And even if there is a sponsor for the video, I can skip that immediately. What I pay for with money I save in time not spent watching ads, thus retaining just a little bit more of my sanity in the process.
Problem is they are ruining their access to the steady stream of new audience…
In any case, I unsubscribed because of that video.
They posted a grovel apology but fk that, I am done with them.
Shane is from a suburb of Chicago called Schaumburg... That burb has reputation for being a bunch of priveledged peeps.
Never heard of em. *and now, they are Bjorking themselves*
This reminds me of URL and what’s going on with there app/yt channel
I look up to the ghoul boys damn, this is sad
Corridor Crew did this right. Keep the popular youtube series going for free on youtube, and do a membership site for other original/in depth projects, grandfathering in paid patreon members to the website membership.
If their content was paywalled like this to begin with I wouldn’t have a problem with it. At least then ppl would be paying to receive something. With it being a change from free to payed content, it feels more like ppl are paying to keep something they already had.
6 dollars usd a month is breakfast lunch and dinner in certain countries
Apparently add revenue is the worst it's been in 10-15 years and their production is production unsustainable in the current economy. I don't think it's greed but desperation.
Who approved this!? I like to think they’re managed by ex-Rooster Teeth personnel.
Alana here doing meth instead of math :D
Charlie keeps his mind open here, stating the obvious: none of us knows what these guys are thinking. My guess here, after matching up the facts we do have, is this all seems like an pessimistic exit strategy. The self stylized bohemian art culture of "creators" is just not believable. You choose the ratio, creators to people making a living is rarely addressed, but we know how long monetarily successful channels last. If you only care about profits, then US equivalent profits are the only ones which matter, and the $5.99 pay wall makes a perverse sense. And if even one of these people in control are "screw art, I do this to eat" mind set, then all TH-cam content creators know you are always one scandal away of your channel taking most aspects of your company down. And truth behind the scandal does not even matter. One look at Anycolor should show us this fact. It is avoiding becoming a penny stock because of artificial steps taken by the Japanese stock market, and Niji is still bleeding daily after losing nearly 1/2 of its value. All of these changes smack of trying to hold on to jobs or profits, a desire to reduce the amount of day to day effort it takes to maintain a channel like this at every level. And now the channel is setup to always be in the black until the channel owners sell it or close it. Somebody has a total wealth number in their head, and this company will now hit that number, even if the company folds the next day. I really think this is a very severe reminder that most "creators" are in this multi-million US dollar business to avoid working, not to create anything with passion or vision. Be it TH-cam Streamers or Disney entertainment 😢
They have at minimum 300k views on the non-relevant videos and the AVERAGE for those videos that they were mostly known for is 1 million some reaching 10 mil.
This is plain greed, pure and simple. Who thought of this scheme out of the three of them???
I mean if we break it all down they're making bank, like lets go with the lowest of 25k for Patreon lets say they do 1 regular add for 15k and one non regular for 30k this is already 70k lets add lowest estimate TH-cam revenue of 3.3k were now at 73.3 now we cant know how much they make off merch so lets go with a modest 10k a month bringing us up to 83.3k a month multiply that by 12 and the low ball estimates come out to 999.6k a year lets round that up and these guys are raking in a million dollars a year.
They were on a Yacht collection competition with Nijisanji and decided they needed to take advantage of Niji's lapse and capitalize their lead. It might not pan out.
The only videos I've watched from these guys are the Puppet History vids which were pretty good, but I'm absolutely not gonna pay a monthly sub just to watch those, much less any of their other stuff
And according to Coffeezilla it appears that the Patreons are even more upset than the subscribers. Because not only are they supporting them on Patreon but they want them to pay the subscription on their platform too. Not fun.
RPM stands for "Revenue Per Mille". RPM refers to the revenue a creator earns per 1,000 views on their videos. Thank you for the fun/interesting weact, miss SmugAlana
Someone is gonna get sued over this. Alternatively they all decide to throw one of them under the bus as a communial sacrifice to the people.
I'd assume RPM is Revenue per Minute in this context?
I live in The Philippines & their "everyone can afford $5.99(344.92php)" is a joke
Smug alana plus 5.99
money, yes
I'd charge 50 cents a month. 6 dollars a year to me that's fair because if EVERYONE pays that, it really adds up.
ok with this action they skipped shooting the foot and went for the head just like how thor should have killed thanos .
for example Honey Badger Radio they talk about there topics in a safe way on youtube
and then they have an [ after show ]
which will likely be an uncensored talk on all the topic they where looking into it .
also with the sub they will have a liberary of other stuff .
these guys will likely fall soon
bro in my country $5.99 equal a month of my ciggarete, which is half my salary a month XD.
I put a link to an update by them. Might want to check your list to approve comments on TH-cam.
