    One of my favorite bad reviews was one of Nier automata. The reviewer gave it a 5/10 claiming the story was confusing and that it felt like it was only half of a story that being why they gave it half of a 10 then followed that statement by saying they saw the game had more endings by playing past the first ending but but couldn’t be asked to deal with the boring gameplay to see more of the game. So they only played a 3rd of the game then got mad when the story didn’t feel complete. Gotta love it.

    • @vovinia
      @vovinia 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JamesP7 I'll take the book series analogy then. If the first book is crap I can just skip to book 2 or even 3, if some series are notably different as the author matures. I can't skip playing the boring part of the game as it's required to continue. If you get an ending and credits roll and you say it's bad and you don't want to keep playing, that's a fair review.

    • @JamesP7
      @JamesP7 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      @@vovinia No that isn’t? A story’s “completeness” has no bearing on that story being good or not. A horrible story can be complete and an incredible story can blue-ball you with an incomplete ending (Across the Spiderverse being a fairly recent example).
      And as before, why would you skip content within a timeline? We’re talking about someone who stopped before a story was complete and labeled the story as incomplete without having even gotten the intended completion. This is like playing DDLC and saying the game is “bland and unfinished” because you stopped after finishing Act 1. Sure, you achieved *a* ending, but not any of the developer’s intended conclusions of the story.

    I was already wary of game journos in the early 2000s and wasn't taking them too seriously. But the Kane & Lynch incident is what made me stop visiting them entirely. I have not gone to a game journalism site on purpose since 2007. That event was a HUGE deal, it was basically gamergate 7 years before gamergate, but with less outrage, less public knowledge, less impact and less... game journalists lying about what it is to make gamers look bad on purpose because they actually hate games and gamers.
    One of the big ones for me before Kane & Lynch was a DMC3 review, I think it was Gamespot but I might be wrong (it was 18 years ago after all). What happened was that reviewers got a review copy that was glitched so normal mode was actually hard mode, which of course is pretty difficult to deal with when you're playing as a non-upgraded Dante. That review, and a few others, were complaining about how it took them HOURS to beat the Hell Vanguard miniboss at the end of Mission 2, and that negatively affected the scores that were given out. When it was finally found out that reviewers were playing on the incorrect version of the game, that specific reviewer refused to revise his review and score.
    Also... it's really not that hard to beat the Hell Vanguard on hard mode, but game journalists will game journalist.

      Okay to be fair, Bayo getting together with Luka in 3 is rushed as all hell. It's not a good romance even on its own merits. It feels like it's the Bayonetta 4 to a hypothetical Bayo 3 we never got where that game's story focused on strengthening Cereza's relationship with Luka

    • @darkstorm2579
      @darkstorm2579 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Okay, there’s a reason why people dislike the romance in Bayonetta 3, and that’s because it was rushed as hell. The previous Bayonetta games never really developed Bayonetta and Luka’s relationship as romantic. If anything, it could be viewed as pet-like as while Luka may have feelings for Bayonetta, she doesn’t really return those feelings, though she does still care about him as a friend. Sure, the Bayonetta we play as in the third game is a different version of Bayonetta, but the game also implies that she and Luka are a destined pair across the multiverse, which was not supported by the first two games. I wouldn’t have minded Bayonetta ending up Luka if it actually felt organic, but it doesn’t.
      Edit: Just as a disclaimer, I am one of the people who disliked the romance of Bayo 3 as I shipped her with Jeanne, mostly because I felt that they had better chemistry. Now, I would have been fine if she and Jeanne remained friends/sister-at-arms as it was just a simple ship on my part as the series never really had romance be the forefront. If anything, it was refreshing to see a female lead not having to deal with romance, which is what made the third game so jarring as it suddenly forced in a romantic subplot. Anyway, those are just my two cents on the matter.

    • @darkstorm2579
      @darkstorm2579 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Weird_Alchemist42 While that is a fair argument, you can also have a guy and a girl be close but not in a romantic relationship. Now this could just be me personally, but I never really got a sense that Bayonetta harbored feelings for Luka in the first two games. Sure, she liked to tease him, but I always interpreted that as just her personality and trying to get a reaction from Luka, not because she liked him in that manner. So it kinda felt like whiplash seeing Bayo suddenly change her tune in the third game and show a lot more feelings for Luka. Granted, the Bayo we play as in that game is a different Bayo, but the game doesn't make it clear until the very end (among some other weird story elements).

    Alien Resurrection was literally the first console FPS with the now universal dual analog stick control scheme. Yet the reason the reviewer trashed it is that very control scheme. Alien Resurrection pioneered using the two stick moving/aiming scheme and was trashed for it.
    Bit of context for Alana and other youngins that may NOT remember games before the early 00s. Any Console FPS before Resurrection used either totally unique control schemes, like Golden Eye on N64 where the same stick moved and aimed you just had to hit the Z button to lock your movement and enable shooting, OR it used the L1/R1 buttons to strafe while the left analog stick moved forward backward and turned, aiming up or down was done by the game as it just auto targeted anything above or below the level you where on. Not by angling the gun but by the projectiles shooting out at a angle.
    Yes FPS on console in the 90s where a WILD ride.
    Edit: OH he left out the most embarassing part of the Resurrection review. The reviewer suggested players wait for a Alien game that had just been announced by Fox and that would be infinitely better than Resurrection. That game? Aliens: Colonial Marines, a game that wouldnt see the light of day for nearly another decade and a half and would be amongst reviewers, including TH-cam reviewers, one of the WORST games released in 2013.

    The sad thing about the Cuphead review? It was Dean Takahasi's third strike, as far as I know.
    The first one was his review for Mass Effect 1, where he claimed the game doesn't tell you that you can level up (which, yes it does. It just doesn't hold your hand), and that it didn't tell you that the triangle was an auto-target lock on for powers and that you HAD to aim at it for the powers to work... which is fucking stupid.
    The second was the gameplay video he did for DOOM 2016, which went down as the most infamous gameplay video on YT, up there with Nostalgia Critic playing Bart's Nightmare. Yes, that was HIS gameplay Mash talked about.
    But yeah, Dean Takahashi is no stranger to abject retardation when reviewing games. Namely because he's not there to revuew games; he's a tech reviewer. He's not there for God of War; he's there for the PS4's graphical fidelity or that empty space in the console that can house cockroaches and silverfish.
