  • Since upgrading to Shimano Di2 on my main bike, I've always wanted the same crisp shifting on my older Giant TCR. This week I picked up a DURA-ACE 9070 Di2 groupset to complete this second upgrade. The 9070 is previous generation, but still fully compatible with current generation Di2. This video is the unboxing, testing, firmware updating, and finally the Di2 diagnostics process completed with the Shimano E-Tube software.
    Groupset Details:
    DURA-ACE 9070 Di2
    - Front and Rear Derailleurs (FD-9070 braze on / RD-9070)
    - Left & Right levers (ST-9070-L / ST-9070-R)
    - Front & Rear brake callipers (BR-9000 x2)
    - Seat post integrated battery (SM-BTR2)
    - Junction box A (SM-EW90-A)
    - Junction box B (SM-JC41)
    - Cables x4 (FD/RD/J-A-B/Batt)
    - Plus a Remote Satellite Climbing Shifter (SW-600)
    Video Index:
    0:00 Intro
    2:26 Unboxing
    9:58 Di2 Connection and Test
    14:38 Battery Removal
    16:17 Component Testing

    Nothing like a Lama Di2 video too keep me company while working 😊
    A small side note is that you can do a limited diagnostics process on the e-tube iOS iPad app as well (no on the iphone version though which makes no sense). It wouldn't have worked in this case with the old battery and no BT dongle but good to know before people start buying PC-links... (which still have its merits like you said, hard wiring to single components etc.)
    Looking forward to more di2 nerdery!

    • @gplama
      @gplama  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      20 minutes later... I've checked it out. Awesome! The only issue is that it needs a working Di2 system and BLE to diagnose... a non-working Di2 system... or parts. I might spin a video up on this shortly. It's a great tip.

      Shane Miller - GPLama excellent!
      Yeah, it doesn’t render the pc link obsolete by any means, but can be useful for us home tinkerers :)

    Shane, your videos can be a long as you want. I find these very helpful. I have never been one to want a Di2 system, but now I am looking everywhere for a good used one on ebay, FB and Craig's list. I am overwhelmed with all the models out there, so time to do some more research. Your follow up video on the install is also excellent.

      @gplama  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Zane! These are a really enjoyable videos to make and share. Lots more to come with Di2 things. Tonight I've got the E-Tube Project Windows software working on my Mac with a virtual machine.... so I could firmware update even more Di2 upgrades (new battery and new levers already picked up for this build.... really really cheap too!). Good luck finding a bargain. They're out there.

    • @bearhuntertv
      @bearhuntertv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shane Miller - GPLama I have no idea where to really start. There seems to be some old models out there and then there are so many to choose from. I look at Shimano’s web site and I am left with even more questions. As you say “happy happy days”. That just means more fun learning.

(I had troubles, even replacing mechanical gear cables :) ) It would be great, if you could get into more details about the things to consider before upgrading an older (not Di2-specific) frame to Di2 in your installation video. Absolutely looking forward to it :)

      @gplama  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The prices will come down. If Shimano release the next generation DuraAce this year (maybe?) then depending on the release list price, this stuff might fall. If it's crazy expensive then the older gear will hold value.

    I’ve been doing the same for my gravel bike. I’ve picked up every wire except one, a b junction, and an ultegra rx mech. I’m still going to beat retail, since I don’t need to buy a charger, but finding 9170 levers at a good price has been impossible. I need 9200 to come out so old ones come on the market. They hydro seems harder to come by, maybe because it’s not an aftermarket upgrade for most people? The battery and junction a won’t be a problem when the time comes.

    I like plug and play. First foray into electric shifting was Di2. Still got it and works great... However, next I bought SRAM Red Etap [for a Ritchey Breakaway so less cables a plus] . The subsequent bike has... Etap. I like the shift quality of Di2, but the Etap is a no brainer - easy peasy. AXS? Hmm.... too many incompatiblities

  • @frenchyroastify

    I recommend making sure one uses a Shimano crankset. The chainrings are stiffer and won’t bend due to the strong forces from the front derailleur.

      Shane Miller - GPLama we love watching you. There’s nothing wrong with fettling with your bike. I love it too! I can spend hours tinkering but doing absolutely nothing! 😁
      I’m undecided on Di2 or Etap. I was very much leaning towards Etap but since the rumours have started about the alleged “miss shifting” on some Etap units, that none of the big “sponsored” TH-camrs seem to want to talk about. I’m now looking more seriously at Di2. It could just be an internet wind up or disgruntled buyers. But sadly it seems there’s just too many to ignore and spending such sums of money, I only want to buy once....and all my mates use Di2 so....
      But I’m just not crazy about the Di2 buttons (a bit too close together) But I’ve been told you can set up Di2 exactly like Etap just using 2 buttons in full synchro mode??
      Do you have any thoughts Shane?

    • @gplama
      @gplama  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The programming options allow eTap style shifting on Di2. For x1 is will be identical. For x2 you'll have to work with S2 mode changing the front chainrings at particular shift points. If you have the wireless module and a Garmin head unit, it'll beep to alert you the next change will also be on the front.

    Isn't it great that we have SRAM, Campagnola & FSA competing to out-improve each other? Although there are so many wires, Di2 is pretty "bullet-proof" makes me appreciate bike mechanics! The bike I crashed in December had Campagnolo EPS, which uses a higher voltage because they wanted better shifting response & power, so whereas Shimano and SRAM can use USB connectors Campag couldn't...

      Required lengths depends on the final wiring solution chosen. I'm not quite at that stage with this yet.
