Turning an Alternator into a motor

  • Turning an alternator into a motor. I put 12V to the armature, and 55V to the stator. I used a brushless speed controller. This speed controller can be configured to different motors. I will up the voltage to 72ish volts later.
At full throttle the motor "hickups" I believe it is because of the brushes on the armatures are having issues at high RPM's

The 6 phases can be paired up in a y or delta configuration to make 3. no 2nd controller needed

Hi, nice work, if I use from 3 wires of the alternator. to have got 12V, rather than 48v, would you help me, Thank you.

12v on the armature is probably way too much. That's probably why it's getting so hot. Also if you reduce the armature voltage you'll get much higher speed out of the motor.

Joel, I have done that and what happens is the brushes start to bounce due to the speed. But great point, u are probably right that 12v is too much. Thank u

Just run it off 3ish volts. 👍🏼 seems to be a good armature voltage.

I am working on a similar project for a Kart. The problem I am facing is low torque at start.
Can you explain if you have face similar issues?
Take a look on idle it run like hell,
What gear ratio do you have on your project?
    Greetings Robert

With a sensorless motor, they have very little torge on startup. They have to spin to find the correct position of the rotor. This is why hall or sine/cosine or resolvers are used in motors. Check out "Building an Alternator Powered Bike" Austivawawa does a great job explaining everything

Hey mate, good to see another tinkerer'.....
I'm currently working on something very similar myself, using a 12v 150a 6 phase alternator. I thought originally that i had 6 wires in three pairs but after removing the diodes and regulator i discovered it was actually 2 groups of three (not connected) or basically 2 separate motor stator field winding's in delta (from what i could tell or atleast no center tap as seen in most connected in wye configuation) .
    This really got me thinking!
Im really not even sure if there is even a practical application for this but hear me out...
Could power be generated at the same time as driving the motor. So i tested this idea and yes it can indeed, now i do understand that there are efficiency loses every time we convert energy etc and I am only a hobbyist of the trade and self taught for the most part....
For this i was only using a bare bones budget setup with a rc 60a air cooled esc running a 4s lipo along with a 12v battery and pwm controller for the rotor coil and it worked adequately for testing on the bench with no driven load , to my surprise (i expected phase interference from the generated magnetic field(s) or something) . For the first test to see if it were even possible, i had no load for the current from the rectifier diodes (which i hooked back up but only using 6 of 12 diodes) of the second stator field winding's either resulting in heat of course, actually i got a substantial amount of heat rather rapidly which caused heat to radiate to the driven stator windings and insulation melt causing a short between 2 phases that resulted in massive vibration as the phases were in an out of short, like a self oscillator. before realizing this i had put it down to phase timing due to being a sensorless setup....
i have since begun collecting parts for testing this furthar and have added a load for the generated current, upgraded to an 18fet 1500w 48-64v ebike controller running 3x 18v 5ah power tool batteries, added a second alternator motor with a belt and pulley to the driving motor with another pwm controller on its rotor coil and all phases shorted together to act as a mechanical load and several multi-meters for monitoring all the vitals. currently attempting to put hall sensors in for better low end torque and phase timing etc not to mention i have been drifting between this and my original project of using it only as a bldc motor for a vehicle of unknown type (scooter, bike, trike or go kart) until i can run some efficiency tests for that purpose. sorry for the short summary /long story but i am curious on your/or anyone's thoughts/criticisms on this and just wanted to encourage you to share more of your experiences and results and that i will be following your channel looking forward to future videos..... hope this nonsense was decipherable. cheers from South Australia Say safe

Does anyone have any good forums/videos they'd like to attach here. I have a 240a alternator laying at home and figured this would be a good project. Figuring I should be able to put some decent power through it if I can figure out what math needs to be done ✔
I do best with detailed instructions instead of winging it. Totally down to relearn some equations.

I wonder why the people who convert these alternators to motors can't simply explain which wires go to which places on the alternator (i.e. battery, speed controller, brushes and stator) and what they are for. That would be good information for those of us who don't have a clue as to what makes these motors do what they do - which is different from what they originally were made to do. I have watched many of these videos and though some are better than others, the people that do some of the better ones don't tell you why they do certain things with certain wires so that they become good motors that we "dummies" can convert to our use as motors. I would dearly like to convert one or more of these things for a scooter project but even if i did everything that they say to do, I don't understand what effect it has on the original equipment to change if from generating power for charging to a motor to do work. Also a good camera angle is often not present and labels on new wires (Bat +, Bat -, etc.) would help a lot.

I know you probably seen the videos but in a nutshell you basically have to rip the alternator apart and remove the diod pack. After that your alternator will either have 6 or 3 wires that went to the diod pack. If there are 3 your alternator stator is in a wye configuration. If it has 6 then it's in a Delta configuration and. You can use the alternator in a wye configuration but it will be less powerful and produce less torque. Where as a Delta configuration will be much more powerful and produce more torque. If let's say you do decide to use a wye configuration hooking the wires up to the speed controller will be a breeze because there are only 3 wires and there are only 3 wires on the speed controller. But if you go with a Delta you will need to hook the 6 wires up in a special combination. Attach 2 wires to the brush assembly as well One thing I found out is if the alternator has only 3 wires and let's say you want to use the Delta configuration you will need to find the neutral point in the stator that contains the other 3 wires

Would it be possible to power an ac motor from a blender with a bldc controller from an rc car? I tried just taking the three wires from the blender motor and attaching it to corresponding wires on the esc but nothing happened. Would it be possible to get it working without having to do a complete rewinding?

You shouldnt run these on low speed. there is not cooling enough. At normal engine idle the alternator spins at around 3000 rpm. So keep alternator between 3-15000 rpm is the best.
