Yep, me too, my favourite recording of music, ever. I discovered them in 1985 when I was 12 and saved up all my babysitting money to buy Alchemy Live on double tape from WHSmiths. I've been through 2 CDs since, I think they had to work too hard, thank goodness for mobile phones and bluetooth now!

If you think it's insane that you're listening to a song from 45 years ago, it's even more insane that Mark Knopfler (the guy in red) just released a new album yesterday. That's April 12, 2024. He's 74 years old and still recording, although I don't think he's planning to tour anymore. (I'm younger than he is, and I don't want to travel for work anymore either.)
In addition to his work as a singer and guitarist, he also wrote all the songs on all six Dire Straits albums. Then he went on write all the songs on ten solo albums. And he did nine film soundtracks too. If you start exploring his work in earnest, you're not going to run out of material any time soon

The original studio version came out in 1978, on the band's first album, and was a huge hit. This "Alchemy" concert was in 1983. At that time the band had been through personnel changes and was almost a completely different group. This was right at the end of a tour, so the band is really tight, and the drummer, Terry Williams, is on fire. I've heard his family was at the concert and he really went all out. One of my favorite moments from this video is just before 3 minutes in your reaction video, where Williams does a particularly fabulous riff and Knopfler and the bass player look back at him and at each other, smiling, and you can tell even they were impressed.

Mark Knopfler hasn't got the voice of a Freddy Mercury, Pavarotti or any other gifted vocal artist, but I'll be damned if his Dylan-esque almost talking style isn't a match made in heaven with the musical genius that was Dire Straits. For similar epic songs check out Telegraph Road from the same gig or Tunnel of Love (this or any other concert).

If you like guitars, a couple of weeks ago Mark Knopfler released a charity single called "Guitar Heroes". It's a10-minute arrangement of an instrumental piece Knopfler wrote for the soundtrack of the movie "Local Hero", one of my favorite movies and where I first discovered Knopfler. The charity version features around 50 musicians with guitar GOATs including David Gilmour, Ronnie Wood, Slash, Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townshend, Brian May and many more . Roger Daltry plays harmonica, with Ringo & Zak Starr on drums and Sting on bass. No video, but this version identifies the players -- th-cam.com/video/zBGm7gJtSZE/w-d-xo.html

I think a lot of people don't understand the lyrics in this (fabulous) song. In the 60s and 70s there were Friday night "Battle of the Bands" concerts in local areas where four or five or more local bands would compete in one place. "Competition from other places." That is what this is about. " Guitar George " knew all the chords, but he only had an old guitar because he couldn't afford a better one. Harry didn't mind if he didn't make the scene. "He had a daytime job and was doin' all right. There were some boys messing around in the corner of the room. The "man" steps up to the microphone to announce that it is time to go home. The competition was over. I've been there!

Need to tell you that the story is actually different, I've heard Mark Knopfler tell the story and it's simple. One night after practicing or something, he went into a bar and there was a band playing, not a very good band, they were called "The Sultans of Swing" Mark made up names and scenarios for each band member then went and wrote the song. That's it, nothing more complex. Just one of the top 5 songs of all time though

I'm 69 years old and while growing old sucks at least in my best most fun years of my life it was also 'The Golden Era Of Rock.' It was a time when exceptionally talented people created exceptional works of art, unlike today when half talented people rely on auto-tune and very often sample song from 'The Golden Era Of Rock' because they don't have the talent to create enough music of high enough quality for their songs. The test of time is what proves something to be exceptional, and the a good bit of 60s, 70s and some of the 80s music has more than stood up to the test of time and will continue to do so not only for decades but for as long as people listen to music.

This was from one of two 1983 concerts in London at the end of an eight-month tour, and recordings from the concerts were released the next year on double LP / CD as "Alchemy Live". A concert video was released years later. The Alchemy tracks are mostly rearrangements of songs from Dire Straits' career and Knopfler's movie soundtracks extended with improvised sections and are all highly recommended.

Talking of genres, LOVEBITES don’t play in this particular pocket but their focus on musical virtuosity is what made us crumblies sit up and pay attention and why their fan base is much older than the average. I think you are the first reactor I've seen play the whole second half all over again. And starting at some of the awesome drumming shots of Terry Williams. He was having a blast... and so were all the other band members and frontman Mark Knopfler! Not only that, the audience was so into it, clapping with the rhythm, becoming part of the performance and energy, hearts swelling and blood pumping as the pace increased... right through the crescendo, and then waiting, waiting... through Mark's tease... to the triumphant finish! And you were, too. That's the way! And that, is why... I just subscribed. Looking forward to watching your reactions ahead, and what you've already done.
Suggestion: If you haven't reacted to Stevie Ray Vaughan yet, you are overdue. You could start with his 1989 Austin performance of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child," then on to other live performances... SRV doing his "Ain't Gone 'n' Give Up On Love," "Leave My Girl Alone," "Texas Flood" (at the El Mocambo), "Look At Little Sister," "Couldn't Stand The Weather," "Life Without You" (Capitol Theater), "Riviera Paradise," "Mary Had A Little Lamb" (1989, Austin), "Rude Mood"/"Lovestruck Baby" (Daytona Beach), "Scuttle Buttin'," "Tin Pan Alley," and many more. Guitar god with an amazing blues-rock voice, Stevie will blow your mind. Not just for his technical mastery, but for him being such an endless conduit for the spirit of the music and the passion he delivers. He was born to play, and his band Double Trouble are awesome.

Great reaction brother - it was so cool to watch you so very into it.....from the momentary disappointment in your voice when you seemed to think the song was about to end to the way you went back and watched the last part again in enjoyed awe.😂
Great to see and glad you enjoyed it.

It’s very true what you say I’m always telling my kids they don’t make music like they used to when everybody sang live and sounded the same with no auto que and the musicians were so talented.dire straight were one of the best bands ever and in my opinion mark k offer is the best guitarist that’s lived he was and still is a phenomenal talent..great video and review anyway man keep doing your thing👍

    Ciertamente, me suscribo!!
Un abrazo desde Chile ( al fin del mundo).

The term 'folk rock' became a better term to describe many of the songs emerging from the 70's, where using just the term 'rock', which really replaced the old term 'rock and roll', didn't really adequately describe the music.

The REASON WHY MARK KNOPFLER SOMETIMES SOUNDED ULTRA FAST WITH HIS GUITAR WAS PARTLY COS HE DIDN'T USE PLECTRA AT ALL..

Now you need to react to Telegraph Road alchemy live. Even more phenomenal than this Also worth checking out is Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa doing I’d rather go blind (live in Amsterdam version) you’ll see someone equally as incredible on the guitar as well as Beth’s amazing voice.
