You don't know the half of it. The thing about Mark Knopfler is that he's left-handed but mastered a right-handed guitar to level most right-handed players can only dream of achieving. A true virtuoso. 😁
Mark Knopfler just makes it look so easy and comfortable yet also really takes you on a journey. The original is special as it was the first, but I love this version especially. The coda at the end just so beautiful with that repeating guitar and keyboard motif.
Yep! For me the top is Jimmy Page, either Stairway to heaven or Since I've been loving you, live at Madison Square garden. I'm lucky enough to have grown up during the greatest guitar players era! Love Knopfler.
THE DEFINITION OF TIGHT: When your drummer mouths back to you the notes you're playing. The definitive version of Sultans of Swing, one of my favourite tunes of all time.
Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits are so legendary ❤ So many amazing masterpieces from Brothers in Arms to Romeo and Juliet to Local Hero (Newcastle FC's theme tune Going Home - which has a new star studded recording for charity) to the incredible music for Princess Bride. Brilliant 👌
Ive listened to this rendition for many, many years and EVERY SINGLE TIME when it gets to the part where it slows down and Mark starts his solo, tears start flowing from my eyes!!!! EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!! AND I DONT KNOW WHY?? AND I DONT CARE!!!❤

Songs in the 1960s were short, usually 2 to 3 minutes. It was in the mid/late 1970's when the longer songs began, so in effect things have come a full circle musically.
Love this song and Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist. You have to react to "Brothers in Arms" easily the most emotional song Dire Straits ever recorded.
It was a demo of Sultans of Swing (1977) that secured Dire Straights their first record deal. I'm grateful I grew up with this music, but it is also fun to see new generations discovering Dire Straits for the first time. (And yes, also check out the lyrics, and the great stories behind them, as Mark is an amazing storyteller). Mark Knopfler is a guitar virtuoso, and he also did the song-writing, composing and arrangement for the band; he nevertheless always made sure to give the other band members a chance to shine (in all of their live performances you will notice that Mark constantly makes eye contact with the other guys, and often moves around the stage to 'connect' with his bandmates, literally sharing the spotlight). Mark is best know for his unique guitar-plucking style (unlike most guitarists, he doesn't use a pick), his amazing tone and his unique phrasing, which contribute to his extraordinary ability to elicit emotion through his guitar, usually producing a visceral impact on the listener. In addition to all of that, Mark is actually left handed, but plays guitar with his right, whilst making it all look so easy! If you want to see the breathtaking musicianship of this band, and the kind of epic musical masterpiece they could collectively produce, you have to treat yourself to their performance of "Telegraph Road" and "Once Upon a Time in the West", both from this Alchemy Live concert. And no exploration of Dire Straits would be complete without checking out their performance of "Brothers in Arms" and "Money for Nothing" from On the Night Live. (Their live performances are always next level!).
You have to do Telegraph Road from the same concert. BTW, this version is faster than the studio version because the drummer was just going for it as his Dad was in the audience for the 1st time. Great reaction to another legendary band. 👊🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Stop passing this ridiculous story about Terry and his da. He has always taken his da to his gigs if at all possible. Terry is a professional and he would never go beyond Mark for any reason and Mark is always in full control of his band. So just stop passing this around.
John Ilsley, the bass player, owns the pub near me in Hampshire. He's cool about Dire Straits like "It's no big deal". Well it is to the rest of the world. Mark Knopfler and John Ilsley are the best.
The thing about Mark Knopfler is that he's left-handed but mastered a right-handed guitar to level most right-handed players can only dream of achieving. A true virtuoso.
Always puzzled me as a lefty and as a guitarist who plays as a righty, why you'd give the arguably more difficult job of fretting to your non dom hand normally, a lefty flip guitar seems strange to me as a lefty you'd then be using your right hand to fret, that should be how right handers normally play logically
Welcome to the golden age of music. I was so lucky to have bands like this to listen to as I grew up. Bands like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Moody Blues, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep etc. Real music sung by real singers. No saccharine music you have today.
Genesis , Yes, Rick Wakeman after he left the band , with “journey to the centre of the Earth “ , Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds. I’ve lived through them all . Trippy , soulful , “dreaming of a greater world “ musical masterpieces we will likely never hear again from the likes of them and others like …. Deep Purple , Pink Floyd , Dire Straights, The Police, Led Zeppelin in live concerts , amazing artists , not with today’s offerings . man, throughout the 1950s to the 1980s Britain exported some of the best pop and rock bands to ever exist. Insane how much talent from the UK just exploded onto the scene and took over the world lol.
Telegraph Road from the same concert is absolutely amazing and displays the sublime musicianship of each and every member! I feel certain you will absolutely love it!! Brilliant reaction! Thank you and best wishes from the UK!
The journalist asked; how does it feel to be considered the best guitarist? PRINCE replied ask MARK! This lineup of Dire Straits is my favorite and this concert contains all the songs that are worth watching. 🌺
My favourite band from my youth & still my go-to vinyl albums to play today. Saw them a few times in the '80's at London venue's. Mark has a unique sound & way of playing & all the band members were at the top of their game for this performance. Probably up there as one of the best live performances of all time. Telegraph Road from the same live show must be your next DS reaction. Fun fact, Mark is a lefty by plays right handed & rarely uses a pick.
I think of this song as an homage to musicians. He’s singing about a real jazz band he saw one night having stumbled into some random south London club in the middle of nowhere. Horns section “blowing Dixie”. Kids in the corner saying “this ain’t rock and roll”. The guitar player can only afford “an old guitar”. This band he saw were heroes. The kind of guys who live for their Saturday night gig, never gonna make it big. Enjoying it. So in this live version I think the whole band really go to town showing us their own musicianship. Both guitars give solos. Drummer is on fire. Bassist is driving and driving and driving it along. Two keyboard players on top of all that. It’s virtually an orchestra. Those lyrics make me feel happy and sad at the same time. Like I say, a homage to all those countless musicians who are great but never get famous, never make money, just make the people happy.
I was in that audience, what an absolutely fabulous night, the entire concert was brilliant. Look how they smiled, pure joy (bands are too cool to smile these days, look how ‘happy’ Oasis always look) I’m pushing 76 now and this gives me as much joy as the first time I heard it. Saw them several times on this tour. Pure genius.
I was there too! I was 18, I'm 59 now, its just the best They all had a great time and we joined in! For me, Terry Williams was the star because everyone in the band was the best Terry is the best drummer no one has heard of, he's one of the best ever
The original band was just 4 guys. The self titled first album where this song is from is just sooo good. Regularly played. Great sound. The more people who listen to Dire Straits the better.
How could anyone not love that song and blissful performance. I was just sitting there like a nodding dog with a big smile on my face the whole way through.
You could react to absolutely any track from this concert and be blown away, but Telegraph Road is simply a masterpiece. It's got everything. I saw them on the next (Live in 85 for the Brothers In Arms album) tour, and to this day it's still the best concert I've ever been to.
awesome knowing music from my day might last just that little bit longer. . . .even though the artist and even the fans have started to disappear. . . cheers for the company you two and all the new fans....
First time i heard this song was back in 1978. It was summer and i was on the beautiful island of Naxos (Greece) From every pub...every beach...every radio you could hear Dire straits...It was hot..the beer cold and the women moore beautiful than ever. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.
This was ALL about the ultimate performance of the music, from Dire Straits. Great reactions Jess and Mike. You are both still picking the best music choices.
Wow! After your "Comfortably Numb" reaction, thanks for turning around this reaction so quickly! IMO you just heard the two best live guitar solos in history from Gilmour and now Knopfler. Knopfer actually considered the name "Sultans of Swing" for the band before deciding on Dire Straits.
We actually recorded both on the same day a month ago. It took them awhile to get through all the copyright issues. We're happy we can finally share them friend
@@RNTV The irony is that I suggested yesterday when I watched your "Numb" reaction that you react to exactly this "Sultans" performance. Back to back masterpieces -- and yes, totally different songs, but equally brilliant.
The drummer was Terry Williams giving a masterclass on the difference between playing the drums and playing the f**k out of the drums , the amount of times Mark and John were looking back at him and grinning was good to see
I really, really enjoyed your reaction. Sometimes you can see it in their faces if people really like something and are vibing to it. I had that impression from you guys. Easiest subscribe of my life.
- LOL. Terry's dad bought him his first drum kit when Terry was 13. He's in his mid thirties here. How could anybody believe this is the 1st time his dad ever saw him play live? When Terry was drummer for the band ROCKPILE, with Dave Edmunds, before he joined DS, he flew his parents to the U.S. to see them in concert. There are multiple documented instances of his parents going to his concerts for years before he ever joined DS.
I was in college in England when this was first released as a single. It was played on the radio constantly and it blew everybody in our year away. I went to six Dire Straits live performances in the following few years. I saw Bowie, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and many other contemporary bands live, but the genius of Mark Knopfler on guitar has never been surpassed in my opinion.
Mark walked into a bar in London and a band was playing, this song is about that encounter. He also wrote a song about a visit to a tv and white goods outlet, the store staff were commenting on someone on MTV. The song “Money for Nothing” is about that visit, they sang it on Live Aid along with another singer from Newcastle, Sting. “Brothers in Arms” is one of Marks best.
Brothers In Arms is a superb piece of songwriting. Knopfler's delivery is honest, engrossing. His guitarwork makes it sound as if the instrument is crying, mourning the senseless loss of lives.
The atmosphere was electric, a shared experience of nostalgia and admiration for the artistry of Dire Straits. It’s moments like these that remind you of the power of live music to bring people together!
Tunnel of Love ‘Live’ at Wembley! It also has the most beautiful guitar solo, makes me so emotional! In fact… anything Live from Dire Straights is a journey and experience that is second to none! Loved your reaction!! ❤
Brothers in arms with the accompanying video is something well worth experiencing! It’s truly moving and so atmospheric you have to experience it sometime to understand cos I can’t explain it’s feeling 👍👍
Love this version - and your reaction! Fun fact - The lyrics were inspired by a performance of a Dixieland jazz band playing in the corner of an almost empty pub in Deptford, South London. At the end of their performance, the lead singer announced their name, the Sultans of Swing; Mark Knopfler found the contrast between the group's dowdy appearance and surroundings and their grandiose name amusing! Yes - more Dire Straits please! 🥰
Their "Brothers in Arms" album is one of the biggest selling albums of all time! It was at 10M sold bout 20 years ago! Its an Absolute Masterpiece, and has to be heard in its entirety! Or you can watch a few reaction vids to The Title Track Brothers in Arms video, which has been used thousands of times to capture the pain n sorrow of losing a loved one in The Military! 😢
I love the fact that straight after watching Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb from the Pulse Concert, you label this brilliant performance by Mark Knopfler as "Best Guitar solo ever"
Probably the 2 best live guitar solos ever... back to back. I love them both, although Gilmore's Comfortably Numb @Pulse is #1 for me but that's only because I was lucky enough to see it live at Earls Court 30yrs ago. I never got to see Dire Straits play unfortunately.
You have just witnessed one of the best live musical performances of all time. I’ve watched this dozens of times and dozens of reactions on TH-cam, and I never get tired of it.
Talk about vicarious thrills!!!- watching reactions to great music with both of you. I've smiled more(continuously) thru 3 reacts than I have in 68 yrs! Thanks
I love the way they wrote or engineered the audience participation in the song, gave them an obvious outlet to be followed by a section that needs attention to appreciate. The audience were given their spot of glory just as the band members had their highlights.
The thing I really love about thgis is that whilst Mark Knopfler is THE guitarist, he’s quite happy to let the rythym guitarist have his own moments of glory too. This video is special because all the members of the band are so generous with each other. Allowing each one to shine in various places and this brings each one to the forefront in a way that is so much fun to watch. They are having an absolute blast playing this!
Great reaction. I liked Mike's lining up of the Pink Floyd and Dire Straits performances, despite being different in style, both absolutely mesmerizing. I just realized that I've been laughing along with your reactions to comedy clips, and now brilliant music reactions. So, with apologies for the delay: subscribed!
In the top 10 of all Live performances ever. Mark Knopfler can play guitar like few others. Finger picking playing rock..... Insane thank you!!!

I was fortunate enough to see this tour live in Houston, Tx. It was either 1985 or 1986. Best live performance Ever!!
Brothers in arms with the accompanying video is something well worth experiencing! It’s truly moving and so atmospheric you have to experience it sometime to understand cos I can’t explain it’s feeling 👍👍
I'm an 80s teen, so love their music! Did you notice the keyboardist dancing his heart away in the background!?! Iconic!
As others have commented, Mark speaks and then his guitar answers! Fantastic!
A band of brilliant musicians, lead by a genius songwriter and guitarist. Sheer magic
It's been said already, but I'll say it again. You really need to listen to Telegraph Road from the same concert. Phenomenal!
You have watched the best live performance ever....ever
I love the fact that straight after watching Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb from the Pulse Concert, you label this brilliant performance by Mark Knopfler as "Best Guitar solo ever"
Probably the 2 best live guitar solos ever... back to back. I love them both, although Gilmore's Comfortably Numb @Pulse is #1 for me but that's only because I was lucky enough to see it live at Earls Court 30yrs ago. I never got to see Dire Straits play unfortunately.
@@Obi-J My absolute favourite guitar solo is by Mark Knopfler, Telegraph road, live in Basel.
A great band. You should do Telegraph Road from the same live show.
Definetely this!
I’m of a certain vintage and grew up listening to this music, back in the day. I’m so appreciative of young people listening to this. Thank you
Was lucky enough to have seen them on this tour. they were fantastic
This is a performance that captures the magic. It also runs twice the length of the studio or the radio release version.
Mark( 6 hands) knopfler mind blowing as always ❤
You have just witnessed one of the best live musical performances of all time. I’ve watched this dozens of times and dozens of reactions on TH-cam, and I never get tired of it.
Along with Gary Moore
musicianship perfected from an early age.
A magic night, the audience knew, the band knew, it is fantastic it was caught on film.
I really like your format. I can see the video and your faces clearly. Nicely done.
I love this performance, was just watching it last weekend on YT :) Watching you two react to this was priceless lol. Felt exactly the same.
Love this. Adore Telegraph road. Thank you for an awesome reaction. 🎉🎉🎉
We had the best time as teenagrs listening to our 70's bands. Happy memories
This is the best Live version of any musical venue that I have ever seen and I am really old!
You know you're watching something great when the band are having as much fun as the audience and feeding off each other. Masterclass.
