You don't know the half of it. The thing about Mark Knopfler is that he's left-handed but mastered a right-handed guitar to level most right-handed players can only dream of achieving. A true virtuoso. 😁
Mark Knopfler just makes it look so easy and comfortable yet also really takes you on a journey. The original is special as it was the first, but I love this version especially. The coda at the end just so beautiful with that repeating guitar and keyboard motif.
Yep! For me the top is Jimmy Page, either Stairway to heaven or Since I've been loving you, live at Madison Square garden. I'm lucky enough to have grown up during the greatest guitar players era! Love Knopfler.
Best guitars, drums, keyboards and wow. Love this version. I have heard the reason Mark Knopfler is wearing the headband isn't because it was the fashion, but kept the sweat out of his eyes.
The thing I really love about thgis is that whilst Mark Knopfler is THE guitarist, he’s quite happy to let the rythym guitarist have his own moments of glory too. This video is special because all the members of the band are so generous with each other. Allowing each one to shine in various places and this brings each one to the forefront in a way that is so much fun to watch. They are having an absolute blast playing this!
Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits are so legendary ❤ So many amazing masterpieces from Brothers in Arms to Romeo and Juliet to Local Hero (Newcastle FC's theme tune Going Home - which has a new star studded recording for charity) to the incredible music for Princess Bride. Brilliant 👌
THE DEFINITION OF TIGHT: When your drummer mouths back to you the notes you're playing. The definitive version of Sultans of Swing, one of my favourite tunes of all time.
Love, love, love this song. The studio version also has a great guitar sequence at the end, but many radio stations used to cut it short when I was young. I tried not to listen to those stations anymore if I could help it.
The unique guitar sound you hear that Mark Knopfler is playing a Fender Stratocaster. It is well known for having a unique sound. I actually owned one for a while while I was playing with a band and I adored it. Fabulous guitar I can't even imagine how much one must cost these days.
Welcome to the golden age of music. I was so lucky to have bands like this to listen to as I grew up. Bands like Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Moody Blues, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep etc. Real music sung by real singers. No saccharine music you have today.
I was in that audience, what an absolutely fabulous night, the entire concert was brilliant. Look how they smiled, pure joy (bands are too cool to smile these days, look how ‘happy’ Oasis always look) I’m pushing 76 now and this gives me as much joy as the first time I heard it. Saw them several times on this tour. Pure genius.
I was there too! I was 18, I'm 59 now, its just the best They all had a great time and we joined in! For me, Terry Williams was the star because everyone in the band was the best Terry is the best drummer no one has heard of, he's one of the best ever
😮 I get the guitar solos are the big selling point here and I agree but please! That drummer! Holy Buckets 🤯! Love this version of Sultans of Swing and really love your reaction😊❤ Keep it up guys!
Ive listened to this rendition for many, many years and EVERY SINGLE TIME when it gets to the part where it slows down and Mark starts his solo, tears start flowing from my eyes!!!! EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!! AND I DONT KNOW WHY?? AND I DONT CARE!!!❤
You have to do Telegraph Road from the same concert. BTW, this version is faster than the studio version because the drummer was just going for it as his Dad was in the audience for the 1st time. Great reaction to another legendary band. 👊🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Stop passing this ridiculous story about Terry and his da. He has always taken his da to his gigs if at all possible. Terry is a professional and he would never go beyond Mark for any reason and Mark is always in full control of his band. So just stop passing this around.
I was in college in England when this was first released as a single. It was played on the radio constantly and it blew everybody in our year away. I went to six Dire Straits live performances in the following few years. I saw Bowie, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and many other contemporary bands live, but the genius of Mark Knopfler on guitar has never been surpassed in my opinion.
You have just witnessed one of the best live musical performances of all time. I’ve watched this dozens of times and dozens of reactions on TH-cam, and I never get tired of it.
My favourite band from my youth & still my go-to vinyl albums to play today. Saw them a few times in the '80's at London venue's. Mark has a unique sound & way of playing & all the band members were at the top of their game for this performance. Probably up there as one of the best live performances of all time. Telegraph Road from the same live show must be your next DS reaction. Fun fact, Mark is a lefty by plays right handed & rarely uses a pick.
Telegraph Road please!🙏 Same venue last song of the night and their jackets came off! Mark changes up his guitar to a "resonator" guitar and the sound makes me weep! Excellent show would have loved to been there! Thank you folks for your reaction love this band!
This is from a time before video recorders, games consoles ( ish ) In my early teens, we would get together for an evening with mates, and listen to LP'S. Bands would make music to suit the market if you like. Pink Floyd, Zep, the Who, list is endless. Thanks for the reaction, awesome! Five great musicians having the time of their lives.
The atmosphere was electric, a shared experience of nostalgia and admiration for the artistry of Dire Straits. It’s moments like these that remind you of the power of live music to bring people together!
Telegraph Road from the same concert is absolutely amazing and displays the sublime musicianship of each and every member! I feel certain you will absolutely love it!! Brilliant reaction! Thank you and best wishes from the UK!
The thing about Mark Knopfler is that he's left-handed but mastered a right-handed guitar to level most right-handed players can only dream of achieving. A true virtuoso.
Always puzzled me as a lefty and as a guitarist who plays as a righty, why you'd give the arguably more difficult job of fretting to your non dom hand normally, a lefty flip guitar seems strange to me as a lefty you'd then be using your right hand to fret, that should be how right handers normally play logically
The original band was just 4 guys. The self titled first album where this song is from is just sooo good. Regularly played. Great sound. The more people who listen to Dire Straits the better.
You could react to absolutely any track from this concert and be blown away, but Telegraph Road is simply a masterpiece. It's got everything. I saw them on the next (Live in 85 for the Brothers In Arms album) tour, and to this day it's still the best concert I've ever been to.
I saw them in 1988 at Wembley when they appeared as part of the Nelson Mandela 70th birthday tribute (he wasn’t released until 1989]. That night John Illsley’s (rhythm guitarist) wife was in hospital giving birth to twins so the world famous guitarist Eric Clapton took his place. A wonderful, memorable event.
This is one of my favourite live performances along with Freddie and Queen at Live Aid. I grew up watching Dire Straits in my teens. I love Brothers in Arms, Sultans of Swing, Telegraph Road, Walk of Life & Money for Nothing. Money for Nothing had a unique video that had digital graphics & was a new concept on MTV. Mark Knopfler wrote the lyrics after watching salesman in a store in the US. The workers were watching MTV videos and were criticising the pop stars for their lavish lifestyles unlike them should to work for a living. Mark wrote down what the workmen were saying and used it as the lyrics.
I have been to two concerts with Dire Straits, both stunning exhibitions of musicianship. Knopflers compositions and virtuoso guitar playing is heartbreakingly beautiful. From Sultans to Brothers in Arms, Walk of Life, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road and so many more, everyone a masterpiece! I grew up with Beatles, Stones, Cream and my particular favourite Bob Dylan, Dire Straits are in my opinion worthy members of the Pantheon of Rock.
This was my first time watching a “live” performance of this. I really enjoyed it. I am old enough to remember the start of Rock and Roll. I even had a 45 rpm EP of Bill Halley. As a teenager+, I listened to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. What amazes me is that I sometimes see rock stars of my youth STILL performing in their 50s and tow 🤣
awesome knowing music from my day might last just that little bit longer. . . .even though the artist and even the fans have started to disappear. . . cheers for the company you two and all the new fans....
Tunnel of Love ‘Live’ at Wembley! It also has the most beautiful guitar solo, makes me so emotional! In fact… anything Live from Dire Straights is a journey and experience that is second to none! Loved your reaction!! ❤
I love the way they wrote or engineered the audience participation in the song, gave them an obvious outlet to be followed by a section that needs attention to appreciate. The audience were given their spot of glory just as the band members had their highlights.
Great reaction again :-) your comment about the song lengths is very true. Allegedly when Queen first went to record companies with Bohemian Rhapsody a lot turned it down saying it was too long and wouldn't get airplay - how wrong they were!!! Also agree with the comments regarding Telegraph Road from the same concert - a true masterpiece.
How could anyone not love that song and blissful performance. I was just sitting there like a nodding dog with a big smile on my face the whole way through.
This reminds me of the 1970s when every week I would go to the Salutation pub in Portsmouth and see the likes of Joe Jackson or the Greyhound in Fulham on saturday and see someone like Kilburn and the High Roads, You would walk past a pub, hear music and think, that sounds OK, lets give it a go. Great times.
I've listened to Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing since I was a kid almost 40 years ago. And this very live performance of SoS I have now seen at least 50 times. Evey time I get the chills, especially at the end. Mark Knopfler is if not the best one of the best guitarists in the world. His fingerpicking technique is amzing and he really gets the guitar to cry in a beautiful way. It's just amazing.
Great live music like this is timeless, and when it comes to Dire Straits it really is the tip of the iceberg. They did so many brilliant live concerts around the globe but probably the best were Alchemy with great tracks like Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love. Also the 'On the Night' gig with unforgettable renditions of Brothers in Arms, Romeo and Juliet and Private Investigations...The list is enormous.
There is rhythm going on here at two levels, first a frenetic paced lead and then a deeper slower paced line. What gave it away was both of your heads nodding, but in response to different paces. Watch yourselves for the different pace of your reactions. Unknown but natural, is why we watch you two so much!
Watched Dire Straits LIVE at Live Aid then I saw them in Hobart Tasmania Australia 2 mth later (after I emigrated) they were an amazing band to watch live! This was a time when UK musicians were at their very best IMO music of the 70's was solid - no gimicks - no computers - no auto voice etc pure music!!
Love this song and Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist. You have to react to "Brothers in Arms" easily the most emotional song Dire Straits ever recorded.
So happy to see you react to this. I was gonna suggest it the other day!! I was 13 when this song came out and I still love it all these years later. This live performance is superb and Mark Knopfler is as sexy as can be!😝 Dave Gilmour and Mark Knopfler did some stuff together way back. Thanks so much for your awesome enthusiasm. Love you guys!❤️
The journalist asked; how does it feel to be considered the best guitarist? PRINCE replied ask MARK! This lineup of Dire Straits is my favorite and this concert contains all the songs that are worth watching. 🌺
Mark walked into a bar in London and a band was playing, this song is about that encounter. He also wrote a song about a visit to a tv and white goods outlet, the store staff were commenting on someone on MTV. The song “Money for Nothing” is about that visit, they sang it on Live Aid along with another singer from Newcastle, Sting. “Brothers in Arms” is one of Marks best.
Brothers In Arms is a superb piece of songwriting. Knopfler's delivery is honest, engrossing. His guitarwork makes it sound as if the instrument is crying, mourning the senseless loss of lives.
Brothers in Arms from On the Night will blow your mind or from the Nelson Mandela concert. Both are brilliant versions of one of their best songs. Mark Knopfler is a genius. Loved this reaction, thank you.
If you like this you have to listen to Telegraph Road from the same live show.
Agree it’s a master peace ❤
Telegraph Road & Private Investigations…..the two best (if that’s even possible for there to be a best) Dire Straits songs.
You must do Telegraph Road !
I like this song but I think Telegraph Road is even better. An absolute master piece.
There was a reason TR was the finale for the concert!
Hey Jess. I recon you started to fall in Love at 10:08.
The change of Melody till the end. 🇦🇺 👀
In the top 10 of all Live performances ever. Mark Knopfler can play guitar like few others. Finger picking playing rock..... Insane thank you!!!
Definitely one of greats
Yep!
For me the top is Jimmy Page, either Stairway to heaven or Since I've been loving you, live at Madison Square garden.
I'm lucky enough to have grown up during the greatest guitar players era!
Love Knopfler.
Telegraph Road from this same concert is perhaps even better!
Best guitars, drums, keyboards and wow. Love this version. I have heard the reason Mark Knopfler is wearing the headband isn't because it was the fashion, but kept the sweat out of his eyes.
One of THE best live performances at any gig anywhere. Sublime. It's not just the music, it's the feeling. Amazing.
The thing I really love about thgis is that whilst Mark Knopfler is THE guitarist, he’s quite happy to let the rythym guitarist have his own moments of glory too. Brilliant 👌
All those instruments together to make that fantastic song Mind blowing!
Mark just turned 75 and released his 10th solo album. Now catch "Telegraph Road" from this same tour. Its a masterpiece.
This is quite simply, one of the greatest rock performances EVER!!!
THE DEFINITION OF TIGHT: When your drummer mouths back to you the notes you're playing. The definitive version of Sultans of Swing, one of my favourite tunes of all time.
The great Terry Williams!
Love, love, love this song. The studio version also has a great guitar sequence at the end, but many radio stations used to cut it short when I was young. I tried not to listen to those stations anymore if I could help it.
Best drumming I've ever heard.
this is when music was music, and talent
And no Ticket Master jacking prices thru the roof
I've watched this so many times on a load of reactions, and never tire of hearing it 🎸🥁🎤
At age 83 Iam
Lovin this . Mark is pure talent
What a great performance
The unique guitar sound you hear that Mark Knopfler is playing a Fender Stratocaster. It is well known for having a unique sound. I actually owned one for a while while I was playing with a band and I adored it. Fabulous guitar I can't even imagine how much one must cost these days.

Talent beyond compare.
One of the best guitarrists of my era... hard to believe he is now 75.....
75, but still playing.
This is amazing, but check out Telegraph Road from this concert, it is an absolute undisputed masterpiece.
They all had a great time and we joined in!
For me, Terry Williams was the star because everyone in the band was the best
Terry is the best drummer no one has heard of, he's one of the best ever
As we say over here "Knopfler told the story, the guitar sang the song". 👌
Everytime this version comes to my ears I stop whatever I'm doing... and I start to dance and to sing.... what a mood, what vibes... that's mental
Same concert, Telegraph Road is even more amazing 😊
I agree.
I have seen this performance over 100times. Never get tired of it. Gives me the chills every time.
😮 I get the guitar solos are the big selling point here and I agree but please! That drummer! Holy Buckets 🤯!
Love this version of Sultans of Swing and really love your reaction😊❤ Keep it up guys!
Telegraph Road from this same concert is even better in my opinion

Stop passing this ridiculous story about Terry and his da. He has always taken his da to his gigs if at all possible. Terry is a professional and he would never go beyond Mark for any reason and Mark is always in full control of his band. So just stop passing this around.
It's not totally bullshit. It was the first time his dad saw him play with dire straights. Obviously he had seen him play before.
Mark Knopfler is from Newcastle in the UK. They are known as Geordies.
No, he was born in Glasgow.
a great performance by mark and the band but the drummer was spectacular
His dad was in the audience, watching him play with Dire Straits for the first time. True story. No surprise that he played like he was possessed.
I’m of a certain vintage and grew up listening to this music, back in the day. I’m so appreciative of young people listening to this. Thank you
From a time when music was music
I was in college in England when this was first released as a single. It was played on the radio constantly and it blew everybody in our year away. I went to six Dire Straits live performances in the following few years. I saw Bowie, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and many other contemporary bands live, but the genius of Mark Knopfler on guitar has never been surpassed in my opinion.
Pure genius without technology help
Dire Straits-Telegraph Road Live- aLCHEMY Tour 1983 is a must see.
second this
Oh, yes!
Yep...totally agree 👍
Todo el concierto y todas las canciones son muy buenas
You have just witnessed one of the best live musical performances of all time. I’ve watched this dozens of times and dozens of reactions on TH-cam, and I never get tired of it.
Along with Gary Moore
My favourite band from my youth & still my go-to vinyl albums to play today. Saw them a few times in the '80's at London venue's. Yeah I saw them as a teen in Glasgow on their last tour before they broke up. They were brilliant!
A band of brilliant musicians, lead by a genius songwriter and guitarist. Sheer magic
One of the greatist live performances ever. Drummer Terry Williams tears it up!
Apparently his parents were there and the band pulled out all the stops for this show.
Brothers in arms was a massive hit for them. It’s honouring the fallen.
No it wasn't unfortunately because it's a good song
It only reached no16 on the uk charts that's not massive
I was fortunate enough to see this tour live in Houston, Tx. It was either 1985 or 1986. Best live performance Ever!!
Telegraph Road please!🙏 Same venue last song of the night and their jackets came off! Mark changes up his guitar to a "resonator" guitar and the sound makes me weep! Excellent show would have loved to been there! Thank you folks for your reaction love this band!
Well He does the start on a National Resonator then changes to a Fender Stratacaster..
I was there, even better at the time, fabulous night.
@@jogooge6384 You know I am green with envy!
@@art3mis290 He only used the resonator for the intro
Back when music was music. No canned instruments, no autotune. I am so glad I was around to see it all.
Mark Knopfler is one of those musicians whose sound is recognizable in the first bar or two... he's fantastic.
This is the best Live version of any musical venue that I have ever seen and I am really old!
Telegraph Road from this same concert, blow your mind! Classic poetry to music. The performance, ****ing nuts!
Telegraph Road from the same concert (Alchemy Live) is a must!
Yes Telegraph road from the same concert. Alan Clarke on piano comes into his own and meshes with Marks guitar wonderfully. Top notch.
The girl on here's a killer!! Very passionate and articulate. You can't fake that enthusiasm. I can not be the only one to notice!!! XOXO
The thing about Mark Knopfler is that he's left-handed but mastered a right-handed guitar to level most right-handed players can only dream of achieving. A true virtuoso.

This is one of the best live Rock performances of all time. 100 times better than the studio version, which you don’t see often.…
The original band was just 4 guys. The self titled first album where this song is from is just sooo good. Regularly played. Great sound. The more people who listen to Dire Straits the better.
I've watched this so many times...I still love Mark's Hendrix-esque head movements...looking trance-like to heaven as his solo hits the stratosphere ❤
You could react to absolutely any track from this concert and be blown away, but Telegraph Road is simply a masterpiece. It's got everything. I saw them on the next (Live in 85 for the Brothers In Arms album) tour, and to this day it's still the best concert I've ever been to.

John Ilsile es el bajista 😊
This was the first time the drummer had played live in front of his dad, so he went all out incredible performance.
Mark was Born in Glasgow Scotland but family left when he was young to live in England where he grew up.
Yeah, so British then.

We had the best time as teenagrs listening to our 70's bands. Happy memories
Terry Williams, the reason I play,,,took me 5 years to get this one perfect 🏴🏴
Knopfler is a guitar magician. What he is capable of defies logic. 😎
yep !
Yes my man. The greatest that ever lived
That’s what you get when you get a banjo player playing an electric guitar like it’s a banjo. Such a unique style
@@damedusa5107 Lefty playing righty too!
I'm told the drums died after this performance and we're buried in a private ceremony .
And that my friends , is the way its done!

Tunnel of Love and Romeo & Juliet are also great
awesome knowing music from my day might last just that little bit longer. . . .even though the artist and even the fans have started to disappear. . . cheers for the company you two and all the new fans....
As others have commented, Mark speaks and then his guitar answers! Fantastic!
Tunnel of Love ‘Live’ at Wembley! It also has the most beautiful guitar solo, makes me so emotional! In fact… anything Live from Dire Straights is a journey and experience that is second to none! Loved your reaction!! ❤

Wow brings back memories of me and my young daughter playing air guitar to this in the mid/late 80’s. Fabulous time.
This is a performance that captures the magic. It also runs twice the length of the studio or the radio release version.

I saw a hilarious comment that the drum kit was carried off on life support after this performance.
Propbably the best guitarist around, Knopfier is just brilliant
Knopfler tells the story - but his guitar does the singing.
