Was just reading on reddit about One D&D and how Wizards fundamentally botched Wild Shape. Something like transforming into a rat is a level 11 ability and you only have generic shapes with the exact same stat block. This makes it difficult to retrofit old Druid archetypes.
What a con game. I bought a "lifetime subscription" to AD&D in 1980 for the grand total of $20. It was the best RPG investment I ever made.

man, you nailed that whole " the game designers will be fired" thing on the head! mass firings for christmas! Including all the book/table top folks, and they still can't get the new edition out in time for the 50th, despite having 49 years of warning....
They all but told us what they were doing. As for the timing... Hasbro is a toy company. That's what they do. They wait until all the Christmas shipments are out, then they cut out the "dead wood."
@@grumpyoldgrognard9561 Yes, but cutting the stable of writers and game designer BEFORE you release the product is not too bright! I read they (Hasbro) lost a billion dollars in the last quarter of the year.... a TOY COMPANY lost money at Christmas!

Thank you for the insights! The OGL d3bacle, combined with what we've learned about "OneD&D" in the aftermath has put me off supporting Hasbro/WOTC any further. I appreciate you putting out the call to others to do the same.
If you will allow it, I'd like to offer one small videographic critique? There was a fan noise throughout the whole video that made it very hard for me to hear what you were saying. If you can figure out what's causing it it might help make your videos that much better!

Yeah... It's literally my attic, and I am using a smart phone for video and sound capture. If I can make a little money a better camera/mic is the first item on my wishlist.

My understanding when we got the leaks regarding the planned OGL 1.2 was like - "Ohhhhh! That's why it's not '6th Edition' - because calling One D&D reverse compatible with 5e was the only way they could try to get away with retroactively replacing the OGL."
If they'd called it 6th edition and treated it - rightfully so - as its own entity, any OGL they made for it would ONLY apply to that edition. But they knew if they did that, people would just stick with 5e and not deal with the new money grubbing version of the game. So they promoted One D&D as "reverse compatible" with 5e to make the (very weak) legal case that any OGL they applied to it would retroactively apply to 5e as well. They got called out, backpedaled, and eventually gave up on that scheme after mass un-subscriptions, but that was absolutely the BS they were trying to get away with when they came up with the 'reverse compatible' lie.
The other thing to mention is that 6e's playtest packets don't look promising at all. The power imbalance between classes looks worse in 6e than it was in 5e in most cases. The playtest packets also buffed and nerfed spells seemingly at random, and nerfed virtually all subclass abilities to death. For some reason, the most recent playtest gave Druids a bunch of new abilities that make them even more overpowered at low levels. The more playtest packets you look at, the more clear it becomes that WotC has no idea what it's doing.
Yeah, this is what happens when you base your game purely off of Squeeky wheels rather than actual playtesting lmao.

WotC knows EXACTLY what their doing. They are pandering to the players knowing full well this will break the game. They don't care. Players buy if you give them what they want. Who cares if it breaks the game?
@@grumpyoldgrognard9561 They're also making changes without caring whether they're making the game better or worse so they can officially stamp the product as a new edition of D&D and mostly limit D&D to virtual tabletop websites owned by Hasbro/WotC where they can charge monthly fees and sell magic items you can use in your campaigns for IRL cash. This is scamming, not game design. Where WotC is knowingly breaking the game is front-loading characters so they are even more powerful at low levels, because those are the levels at which most 5e is played, as many players lack focus and leave campaigns shortly after they begin. They're making D&D more attractive to these players, who demand instant gratification, form a large percentage of their customer base and make the game vastly worse for committed, creative, intelligent players. WotC has also nerfed most subclass abilities to death, except those that actually should be nerfed, creating wild power imbalances that will attract players who want to build broken characters.
It's ok, though; people are migrating to other games, or to OSR, and WotC/Hasbro will continue to collapse. We don't need anyone to help us make OSR content or run OSR games. We'll continue to do what we love regardless of what other people think.
Its oddly tempting to suddenly dip back into old DnD when to be honest I've only ever really had 1 on 1 DnD sessions.
That's also a good opportunity to look at other ttrpgs if you never did before, they don't necessarily cost anything and offer many options for different kind of game or different settings !
You can get great clones of all the early versions of D&D for free, too. But yes... I think we all need to broaden our horizons, a bit.
Hopefully everyone will rally together again to put the boots to Hasbro when OneD&D and their VTT service release.
I already left completely. After Kyle Brink said guys like him couldn’t leave D&D fast enough I went out and bought Pathfinder 2E.
I think the dumber members of the hobby will succumb to FOMO and switch, but I don't see the more dedicated enthusiasts (including almost all the DMs) following suit.
The fact that you have to be halfway to godhood for a rat transformation is insane.
Pathfinder second edition separates pest-form and wild shape, letting druid do a lot of out of combat shenanigans as a squirrel or a rat before they can turn into a bear
Also anyone with primal magic can learn the spells to shapeshift, and I find that nice
OSRIC is my go to Old School D&D book too
OSRIC is the perfect expression of the 1E ruleset. 1E will always have a special place in my heart. I always wind up finding my way back to it, but in all fairness, OSRIC a better organized rule set, and has much more clarity without all the High Gygaxian language.

Oh and..... OSRIC is pretty darn hot... I was lucky and discovered it when it first came out. I refer to it often.

FASA Trek is the best Trek. I wish it still had a strong player base.
From the play test rules I have seen reviewed so far, it is already NOT compatible, and we haven’t seen all of “one” d&d. it will be worse than 5e, dumbed down, generic, and all “fluffy” and safe, with no stakes and sterotyped characters. “ Orcs are people too” and unlimited hit points nonsense has reduced d&d to an infantile level that insults the intelligence of your average 13 year old compared to ad&d when I was 13 years old. Have left d&d on hiatus for a few years, perhaps decades, just like we dd in the 90s.

it's called "fabricating consensus". If you do not let an opposing voice to contest you in front of the public, the public will more likely think there is no opposition whatsoever, simply because not all people have the time nor will to seek an alternate opinion.

We quit calling it Dungeons & Dragons after TSR was bought out. It's called WOTCHO TTRPG.

I really don't have a problem calling it D&D. I call a lot of games D&D that aren't, technically, but games like Castles & Crusades, OSE, and Hyperboria are way more like D&D than modern D&D is. Way I look at it, WotC is dreaming if they think their trademark means anything. D&D is a generic term in the common vernacular.
"Backwards compatable" lol, the power creep will be nuts. The yugi oh card game suffers from this.
And now mtg is suffering from it too because of Hasbro :(
Any game that's economically dependent on things like booster packs and rules supplements is going to have this problem. If you don't offer the players an edge over the options they already have, they won't BUY your supplements.

I think this is going to be much more 3.5 to 3 style changes. you may have to make a few small conversions but nothing major. As for primarily online, it is going to be wherever they can sell the product, if the players want physical books they will be there if however, the base buys digital primarily ad leaves books on the shelf we will see those go away.
Watch the video. That's the scam. It will START as a minor rule change, but they have already announced that they want the 6E rules to "evolve." It's only a matter of time before they are unrecognizable.
But yes... If you won't pay for the subscriptions, they will gladly sell you new books...

This reminds me of when Games Workshop killed the Warhammer Fantasy game and introduced Age of Sigmar. They said all your Fantasy armies would be usable - and for a wee while they were to try to appease irate gamers.
And then... One Page Rule came front
Given enough time the player will go to what's best for them that's why others ttrpgs have seen so many new players coming in, freed from the chackles of being "DnD players" so many saw the TTRPG community for the first time (or at least went to pf2)

Edit: As a DM myself its already very expensive to keep on top of all the books just for 5e. not looking forwards to how One D&D is going to be, looking into playing other systems
Ttrpgs books don't have to be expensive ! Many systems are free to play from cutsey light ruled mausritter or wanderhome to way to complexe for me Savage worlds or fate
And of course if you are looking to try a new and free fantasy system Pathfinder has everything for free on archive of nethys ! (1st, 2nd edition and starfinder too )
Or... Just play the system you already love. I think a healthy mix is probably your best choice. If you love 5th edition, play 5th edition, but YES... Look at the other stuff out there, too!!!

Yo I'm 949, just 6 away ! I think I started in 2019 with call of Cthulhu and not DnD, I didn't play much of 5e and quite quickly went on to find other systems that I like better

I think they want next edition to be 5.5e, like 3.5e was for 3e. While 3.5e isn't 100% Backwards Compatible with 3e, you can still run an adventure made for 3e in 3.5e almost unchanged.
I'm guessing you didn't actually watch the video.
That's how they want it to start, although the 6E playtests are not looking particularly well-designed to accomplish that. But even if they succeed in making 6E reasonably backwards compatible at launch, it will quickly "evolve" into something completely different.
Within few years I can pretty much guarantee not long after WotC shift over to VTT its going to change so dramatically its going to resemble a video game that is geared towards the generation that didn't grow up on traditional D&D and instead it was Harry Potter, Pokémon. World of Warcraft and anime cartoons. Call it what you want but it's even now not really D&D except for the paint job, logo and nostalgic trade dress. Corperate D&D has already thrown its Western-centric Fantasy Tolkien and Swords and pulp Swords and Sorcery roots into the trash bin labeled problematic, WotC settings and old TSR material rewrites are boring, bland and souless, it's system is also compromised by poorly implemented ever increasing rules spam and meta gaminess and more and more a video game like system which will only increase after the jump to a digital format all nicely contained in WotC walled garden where it can dole out the dlc content and charge a subscription simply to be there. They will definitely be burying the traditional rules set and stop releasing books, just read between the lines of WotC bullshit "There will not be a new edition" to read we are done calling the rules by edition numbers and will simply call it D&D regardless of how the game "evolves" and eventually the DMs job will be removed from the consumer end and run strictly on an AI chat box, wait for it, wait for it 😆 I don't care because I'll be using OSR for my D&D fix and skipping WotC forever at this point. There are better more authentic D&D games that reflect the spirit of D&D as the original visionaries and creators Arenson and Gygax intended that modernized and streamlined old school B/X and AD&D so why do we need Has-bin-Bro anyway?

So are they trying to make D&D an online thing? Sounds like alot of people will be playing older editions in the future. The reason that I can’t get into video games is because of the constant updates and micro transactions. If they bring that to newer D&D editions I probably won’t play them.
Yes. They have announced this publicly. 6E is going to be inextricably linked to their inhouse VTT, and rules updates will be applied to your account as a subscription service.
Finally I found another cantankerous lively Elder Senior boomer of the hobby producing videos now that I totally burned out Tim Kask of (curmudgeon of the Cellar show). The straw that broke my interactions with Tim was when I posted a message telling someone in the comment section that Gandalf of Lord of the Rings, IMHO, should be stated way higher than a 5th Level OSR DnD Magic User (at least 14trh level) and if they don't like my opinion they can "go pound sand", but the reality was a series of agitating comments on my part. Telling old Tim he was the original "Thac0 the clown" caricature probably didn't help but was worth it. LOL
Just FYI... I am the original THAC0 the clown, so you totally owe Tim an apology.
