A Late-Night Rant About "The Golden Age of TTRPGs"

  • The Golden Age of Dungeons & Dragons ended years ago, AFAIC. Whether you agree or not, it hardly matters. 5E is on the way to the scrap heap. The writing is on the wall. One way or the other, "official" D&D is on the way out.
    True, that.
    So what?
The golden age of Dungeons & Dragons is over.
The golden age of TTRPGs hasn't even started yet.

"D&D is not the tide. It's just another boat."
    Pure poetry.

I'm a Brazilian teacher, 30 yo, radical leftie (union/an-com), and you are one of the very few TTRPG channels that really speaks to me. All the RPGs you mentioned I also own and have played most of them (BattleTech, Mechnoir, Traveller, obviously love me some retroclones or OSR-styled too, S&W, LL, OSE, OSRIC, Hyperborea, all that). I could never have guessed you would define yourself as a radical centrist. But this is an enlightening experience as to table composition, and who we play with. Once more, thank you for the wisdom pellets you provide every now and then.

@jamesfullard OK. Just for you, I'll put a short out tonight. I wasn't planning to use it, but wtf? Why not. I do have something longer in the pipeline, but it includes more than a few assumptions and statements of fact, and research is way harder than ranting and raving.

I went to garycon this year and I feel like the golden age will survive, especially if people are interested in playing new games like I tried this year!
I played classic Traveller, Gamma World and Chainmail for the first time.
My friends and I haven't played a new edition of DnD since 3e.
I've introduced my young cousins who just got into ttrpgs with BECMI, Castle and Crusades and DCC! They love it, and its been great that I've been their first exposure to ttrpgs.
They had no idea what critical role is and I thank god for that.

I will never go to GenCon again. It's a corporately sponsored, mob-rule, house-organ for Hasbro. GenCon is a straight-up shit-show that's actively trying to keep people like me out.
      I'm straight. I'm male. I'm white. I'm old.
      I am THAC0 the clown.
I'm everything that Hasbro is trying to drive out of the hobby.
I also have more disposable income than pretty much any "feminist studies" major, but hey. If Hasbro doesn't want my money? No problem.
Garycon sounds like a LOT more fun.
Yeah... I am totally going to be there next year.

@@grumpyoldgrognard9561 I think my brother and I were the only fellas in our age group at the tables we played at. Most of the people who went are over the age of 45.
The great thing was that it didn't matter, everyone was there for gaming, plain and simple.
Ok maybe not everyone, there were a few "influencer/content creator" types, but no one really cared, at least I didn't.
Other than the 5e remake of the Caverns of Tsojcanth there was 0 Hasbro/WoTC presence. They didn't have a booth at all.
I'm Canadian, so I gotta pick my cons out carefully, and I had never been to a TTRPG focused one like garycon before. It was 100% worth it being my first. I met so many great people that were their at the start of roleplaying games.

TTRPG's will only die if we stop getting together to play games. I just attended Conquest 2024 (Melbourne, Australia) and there was so much stuff being played, I even got in a game of classic Traveller. There are so many good older systems plus a swath of new games that are great. There will be a bit of a skirmish as D&D departs the scene and we see what players gravitate towards. I see Matt Finch is going to do an updated version of OSRIC. I wonder if it will be based on the 5e Creative Commons or the OGL. PS: Is that Yoda on the shelf using the force to stop the fall of your empire of books?

I couldn't agree more. I simply do not understand why people waste their time going to corporately funded house-organs like GenCon. Waste of time and money. The smaller regional events is where it's at.
And yes. I do have a Yoda bookstand! Good eye.

Doesn't bother me in any way. I can always play D&D, no matter what happens to any company. I think the golden age was the 80s, but that's just me 🙂

I agree. Platitudes aside, economics IS a zero-sum game. D&D needs to stop vacuuming up all of gamers' discretionary spending before the larger hobby can even have a chance of taking off.

Any idea why they couldn't have held off that idiotic OGL debacle until the start of THIS year?
Without that the d&d movie wouldn't have failed that badly and they wouldn't have really crap PR right through today.
Lord when are they going to start publicising their new edition and what setting they're going to use as I doubt anyone will be interested if they think the D&D beyond site alone will draw them sufficient subscribers?

    • @grumpyoldgrognard9561
      @grumpyoldgrognard9561  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

They tried. They thought if they could get a bunch of content producers to sign the OGL before it was formally announced the rollout would be smoother. They threatened these creators with sanctions if they didn't sign and return it in a week or so, without telling ANYONE about it. The only reason the OGL 2 became public knowledge is that one of the people they were trying to extort leaked the document.

What are your preferred editions of Rolemaster and Traveller?

    • @grumpyoldgrognard9561
      @grumpyoldgrognard9561  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

@chaseforchrist I can't honestly say I have a favorite edition of rolemaster. I play a Frankenstein monster version. I started using it when it first came out to play in a Harn home brew, but I didn't buy the campaign guide until I started running an ICE Middle Earth campaign. That was probably 2nd or third edition. I own the current edition, but it's never gotten any table time.
My favorite edition of Traveller is mongoose 2e. It's very true to the OG but washes out some of the 70s sci-fi tech tropes that don't mesh with our modern advances. The massive central computer rooms and dumb terminals are gone, now, replaced by decentralized networked systems. Armor is treated differently, but the core rules are basically the same.
Oh... And you won't die during character creation anymore. While I haven't decided if that's an improvement or not, the players seem to prefer it.
