    Paul, I heard "The Boxer" for for the first time when I was about 10 years old. I lived in Brazil then and did not speak English. Your music, your voice, was one of the reasons I wanted to learn English, as I wanted to understand what it was this man was singing about.
    As I slowly did learn the language and words, it made tears run down my face.
    45 years later, it still does after all these years.
    Gratitude.

      @@mayflower2370 I have no problem with "stealing" music. The thing is the album became the best album in west true all time and Paul got political and didn't talk about it. Im from Sweden and we have huge artists that "stole" Cuba/spanish/ music. But they did it the right way. The artists from sweden smuggled money true the guitar cases to the poor people in Cuba for en example. IF they would been cought they would have been executed. THATS how you win someones hearth. That is how you earn respect to "steal" their music" What did Paul do to South Africa?

    • @mayflower2370
      @mayflower2370 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SeaDawgOST I don't think we should expect artists to become freedom fighting vigilantes. They're just people making music. Paul Simon just wanted to make music, and South African music just happened to peak his interest. He thought about music before anything; leave the freedom fighting to freedom fighters.

    Mr. Simon, I'm 18 years old from Texas and want to thank you personally for this song. Early last year, I lost my younger teenage brother to suicide. Later, that September, we celebrated his 16th birthday. I remember I'd started listening to "the Boxer" heavily at the start of September, after hearing Heart perform it at their concert in August. It was a confusing and stressful time in my life and I woke up every day having to force myself out of bed. School sucked and I dreaded it, but I had about 5-10 minutes of happiness every day that I looked forward to. When I'd come home mid-day for lunch, I'd spend a few minutes strumming through "The Boxer" and singing it in my empty house. Sometimes I'd barely eat anything just so I'd have more time with the song. I felt full and truly happy when I played it. I listened to it non-stop. "The Boxer" got me through the month of September, and it will always be one of my favorite songs. So thank you for writing it. Much love through this virus mess.

    Dear Paul Simon, This is one of the songs I sang to my father during his process of dying. To acknowledge his difficult life and to celebrate his perseverance to do his best despite the hand he was dealt. I also sang it for myself for many of the same reasons but also to emphasize that this life has choice to be conscious and kind and living in peace no matter what. That was 30 years ago now.
    Thank you for your timeless word portraits wrapped in the magic of music.

There is something about the image of the boxer who despite being beaten and bearing the scars of life nevertheless persists and goes on. A story about Paul Simon: I've always been a fan of Simon's music and had a chance to see him at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver several years ago. After the show, we were walking back to our car and were passing what turned out to be the theatre's back door. There were several people standing there and a limousine was parked at the curb. Two burly men came out of the door and held up their hands as if to hold everyone back. Someone in the crowd asked if Paul gave autographs and one of the men said sometimes, and that he would stop if he felt inclined to do so. The door opened and Simon came out, a small man wearing a baseball cap, looking so nondescript that you'd probably not recognize him if you passed him in the street. He was guarded by a couple of minders. For some reason or other, he looked directly at me, came over, stuck out his hand and thanked me for coming to the show. I was so taken aback that I mumbled something about how much I enjoyed it, he turned, went to the limo, hopped in and was gone. I personally think that he picked me out because I was clearly the oldest one there, that I had probably been a fan for years and he was thoughtful enough to take a moment to acknowledge it.

And there is is beauty in a young man wise beyond his years singing a new song he's written; and beauty in an old man singing the song he wrote nearly a lifetime ago, now beloved by millions, and sharing it in a simple way to lift up the suffering and frightened in a dark time. Both beautiful.

I spent hours going through the songs in that book, eventually creating my own arrangements of your songs for my Friends and I to perform for our families.

To have this gift from Paul Simon now ties together what feels like a number of distinct lives I've led. One of those lives was 22 years long, in the world's greatest city NYC. I fell in love with Paul Simon when I was around 13...
    His songs touched a young girl's heart. I remember even submitting a letter to Parade magazine, asking whether he was married! This was way before the internet...probably 1970. I checked the Parade for weeks but my question never appeared...so I grew up, married, was widowed, married again.
    All through my life I listened to Paul, and kept loving him for his poetry, his emotions, his words that just, well, understood....now I am retired, live in Connecticut in a much, much less expensive house than Paul's house in Connecticut, and this recording, with Paul older, voice a little shaky, looking small, brought me to tears. God bless you, Paul. Thank you for sharing your gift.

    I saw Mr. Simon sing this at Jones Beach in 1987, at the culmination of the Graceland tour. It was unforgettable, because he performed as if it were "coming home": sweet-bittersweet. (He memorably told the audience "I grew up on this beach.") He'd traveled the world, striking a blow for freedom, against apartheid in South Africa, winding up back home in NY. I was about to start my first year of college, so it just had that feeling of being a crossroads. I'll always associate that exact performance with one stage of life ending, another beginning.

    I remember buying the 45 rpm with the red Columbia label and spinning it on my 20 dollar portable phonograph with one tinny speaker. It even sounded great on that gear because its as much about the story as the song. The story of redemption.

    The original recording never ceases to bring a tear to my eye. The lyrical content paints such a majestic picture that only my mind's eye can see. The build-up at the end and the crescendo with everything else slowly rising in intensity while the harmonies of S&G remain steady and consistent. Even my near 15 year old boy loves this song and his musical hero is Eminem (sigh....). This song was written before I was born as I was born in 1970 in the Bronx (and my favorite Yankees team is the 1977-78 gang!!), but being a Bergen County boy across the bridge, this song reeks of New York and can place me right in the heart of NYC any time I hear it. MY heart is with those in NYC and my former home-base of Bergen County, NJ. Thanks Paul for doing these videos. Stay safe!
