It’s amazing that I’m only 20 years old and Canada feels like a completely different place from what it was even 5 years ago. Im too young to be nostalgic for old Canada yet here we are.
You absorb too much right wing media/propaganda....the world isnt just fine. Its progressing and getting better all the time. Dont let them ROB you of your optimism.
You have no idea, my boy. I was in Kingston where Don coached for my first 13 years. We had the ice storm in the 90s that shut everything down. No hot water no lights no hot food for two weeks and no one could drive anywhere. We all were a community we all helped eachother we all played outside and helped the old people and helped the other kids. I want you to imagine if that happened today. Not one person would go outside to help anyone. There is no sense of community left in Western America and it has been strictly by design.
@@tomhanks2863 I don't know if NOBODY would help. But things are definitely different now. The Government is driving a wedge between us trying to destroy the Middle class. Rich or Poor is the way they want it. In 10 years home ownership for the middle class will be a thing of the past. This generation have their parents to help, the next generation will not.
Are we really gonna act like Don didn't deserve every last bit of it? Between the shit that came out and all the cop bootlicking he did prior to this, it's become clear that Cherry's entire mindset belongs in the garbage pile of history.
I can't believe cbc snowflakes canned him for that! He has been far more abrasive, and controversial at other stages in his career. The man is still a highly respected Patriot, and cbc just showed their true wokeness. Now they must be defunded!
His passion for our country and the war heroes that did the most for us just to live a normal life, ended his career that he loved so much. Thank you for everything Don, the sport to us younger guys will never be the same without you.
No...i applaud his support of veterans and people of service. It was his racist remarks that got him fired and he made just as shitty remarks in the past that should have had him fired YEARS ago.
Thing is, you're talking about entitled ungrateful immigrants.....dont get me wrong, I know there's good new immigrants who will buy a poppy, but many are here to exploit our system....they don't give a shit about our soldiers or canada. It is what it is
As a Canadian we cannot forget that Canadian veterans didn't win freedom for anyone. The UK and US will always do all the real work while we reap too much credit as an insignificant nation.
I saw this episode and when Don talked about this, I did not even think of anyone else, but I thought to myself I could do more, I can't believe that a person in our country can get fired for supporting our troops and the memory of those that lost their lives for our country. I liked Coach's corner, but I think it is terrible that we no longer have the national voice that recognizes the people that defend our country. Hey Don, I will have a poppy every year because of the importance of the people that sacrifice for us, you made us aware of the sacrifice that was made! I heard you...
You're not wrong. O e of the most disappointing things was when the Legion threw Don under the bus by not standing up for him. Virtue signaling. After all Don did for the Legjon over the last 4 or 5 decades, he deserved better.
My wife and i often visit the Canadian graves in the Netherlands, its about the respect and the love for every fallen soldier that gave the biggest thing you can give.
Thank you for your love and respect. My Grandfather was a Canadian WW2 veteran, I travelled with him in 2005 to Europe, we toured all over the Netherlands and went to many places he helped liberate. The people were great over there and treated us like family. My Grandfather was 17 when he joined in 1943 and it was his nightmare till he passed! His best friend, they joined together, is buried in a Canadian War Cemetery in Holland.
Don was due for retirement anyway. No loss to us because he is still with us and can and should write a few books about his knowledge a nd experiences. I have been an avid NHL hockey fan here in western Canada since the late 1950s when I was a child actively watching games on CBC TV with my family.
Or respect the freedom of choice we have in this country. I know many people who may not wear it, but still put their change in the box, or tap the screen to donate.
I watched the NHL my entire life. I grew up idolizing the players. I knew every number and every player on every team. I bought the games. I bought jerseys. This was the last time I ever watched anything NHL related. I told my father I would never watch again and he laughed at the time. Here we are like a decade later and I haven't watched a thing. I don't have much to be proud of in this life, but I am proud I stood with Don. Unlike his spineless friend sitting beside him. You people that didn't care about this at the time should be ashamed.
I have a Immigrant parents . There is absolutely nothing wrong with what Cherry said. Every cultures all say "us , our people " What's wrong with you people?? I 100% agree . We live in this beautiful country of Canada and we should all pay respect to veterans who all sacrificed for us to live here.
Absolutely. What's ironic to is he said "you people" and some idiots took it as racist. They're the racist ones because they have a specific demographic that they assumed he was offending lol
Your take so conveniently ignores the majority of what he said. It's not that he referred to them as "you people" It's that he 1) assumes the people downtown not wearing poppies were immigrants (hmm, I wonder why? Because they weren't white?) 2) He says "you people come to this country, you love our milk and honey" etc... "you should wear a poppy) Now, what the fuck does any of this have to do with hockey? That's why he got fired. Cause as much as I loved his hockey talk, I didn't give a shit about his stupid, racist, ignorant perspectives on what a "real Canadian" is.
whats wrong with 'you people'? This isnt complicated...stop and think for just a few seconds and tell me what you think he means when he says 'you people'. actually think about it. Hint : He is not referring to people in general who aren't buying a poppy. He is speaking of very specific people...who do you think that might be? Hint 2 : He actually gives you the answer if you go back and watch it again. Now...i want to be very clear in that i do not think Don is a racist. I think he is a brain addled old man who was never the brightest bulb to begin with and he is from another generation and his ideas on culture and community are antiquated. It was time for him to go because his old brain had serious problems finishing thoughts and sentences which is clearly evident in this video. He still has a weekly podcast if you want to hear him and i actually listen every week.
And we should all have a choice on how we like to express our gratitude or not. Putting a cheap fake flower on your coat or sun visor for a few weeks doesn't make you more patriotic or appreciative than someone who doesn't. That's what's great about the country, and the people who fought were fighting so we have choices.
@@krimpoo if the words “you people “ are hurtful I think you need to grow some thicker skin, he also called the people who buy poppies “you people” was that racist too? immigrants that come here can be any race even white, just like white ppl aren’t the only ones who buy poppies, don was referring to anyone immigrant or Canadian born who comes/lives here, enjoys the freedom and entitlement but doesn’t pay respect to how this country became so great and the young men who died for our privilege and freedom If the words you people are so offensive maybe they should be removed from the English language
Don's blazer, poppy and tie-pin are pure class. He went out speaking the truth and looking like a million bucks. Ron is a PC wimp... perfect for the modern CBC.

This is not about poppies, this is about a tribute of respect and gratitude to those who deserve it at the cost of their lives given for their duty to their homeland. Poppy is an expression of our feelings.
You are half right. In his mind it is about poppies but it's also about immigrants and he made that clear by saying 'you people' and those who 'come here for the milk and honey'....this isnt rocket surgery. His views on immigration have no part in a discussion about poppies and has no reason to be spoken during a hockey broadcast. It’s heartbreaking to see Don cherry being fired from it but at the same time he shouldn’t if targeted people like that. You can’t be making comments like that. @ZZCossack ZZ The only person that truly knows how he meant it is the person who spoke it. The way I took it that it was anyone that did not support the veterans, were to get on board . And regarding the comment about coming to this country, again I think that he said anyone that comes here assimilate and continue to support our ageing veterans, some that struggle financially daily. Like both my relatives that came here from other countries, they came with a good open mind.
@ZZCossack ZZ OK you make some good points, however as a public speaker, as an orator anything you say will always be open up to interpretation. Everyone knows that he speaks old-school and isn’t politically correct as many would like him to be. Interesting that your name is cossack, because my ancestor was a Cossack and came here for a better life.
I ceased watching HNIC after Sportsnet fired Don. Don's comments are entirely valid. I would in a heartbeat purchase multiple poppies in support of our Canadian brothers in arms if I were able to legitimately cross the border into Windsor, Ontario. HNIC is simply not the same without you Don, nor will it ever be again.
@ZZCossack ZZ Obvious who "those people" "you come to our country" are? What people would those be? I guess you weren't in Afghanistan Christmas of 2010 when he made a suprise visit to the CAF personell among who were people of all nationalities serving. Interesting how the masses continue to support and vote for a Prime Minister that feels Veterans are asking to much but pays 10.5 million dollars to a terrorist war criminal. I understood exactly what he was saying and there was nothing xenophobic about it.
Difference is that Grapes has made his "fuck you" money a long time ago. And he's made that money being himself over a long career. Mclean is nothing without HNIC, so he sided with the hand that fed him.

And Trudeau also told a vet "You ask for too much" Broke my heart to see that vet's face. Harper also said, "We owe them no moral obligation." The disrespect for our brave vets comes from all parties. They do not give a shit about us or our grandparents' sacrifices. That is obvious. i refuse to support any of these politrixters from Con or Lib. The part that got Don in shit was not "You people", it was the added "Who come here" to that speech. i have loved Don since his Bruins days, followed him ever since, and I can admit, thinking of my Gramps, who took fascist bullets for our freedoms, he was against any and all such shameful centring out of minorities. He told me of how his best friend fought beside him in trenches and on the way home across Canada, the legions refused his best friend alcohol at their stops, and he was in uniform. They refused him because he was a native. My gramps took a stand against the legion after that, and I heard his story after asking him why he never attended legion events. On top of all this, the veterans ALL hate this guy Cherry. His statement was straight up a knee to the balls to the veterans. If you want to advertise the poppy and promote it, OK. Keep the veterans and poppies the subject not drag other issues instead making people ask what's going on here.

@@hotcoffeegaming3397 110% agree. Diversity is a great thing. My parents immigrated from Europe back in the 50's. They assimilated nicely into Canadian society and contributed to the local community. They have trouble hiring local workers because those very workers cannot afford low-paying jobs due to the cost of living in big cities like Toronto and Vancouver. It's not about diversity. A company like Telus employs customer service reps and technician support workers based mostly India instead of hiring and training local employees. Now, there are Indian people who have graciously assimilated into Canada and adapted to Canadian customs. Wearing a poppy on November 11th is merely symbolic. My dad fought during WW2 in France, Belgium and Holland as an heroic member of the Calgary Highlanders and thankfully he survived until his death at the age of 80 years old in early 2001. I was born in Ottawa and I do not need a poppy to pay respects to my dad's military legacy because I lived it with him.
If only our WWI and II veterans could see the "papers, please" new normalers wearing poppies these days. They have no right to wear it nor to be solemn. Those veterans didn't fight and die for this. Rogers Sportsnet fired him. Disappointed that your favourite "liberal" lightning rod couldn't have been the ones? What truth? Don was speaking out of his own narrow, uninformed opinions & assumptions, which he WAS NOT entitled to express on a hockey show, where he represented the company he worked for & its management, who had to do public relations work with it's huge customer base (the whole country) to clean up his mess. If I expressed negative opinions of some of my company's customers while on duty I'D BE FIRED TOO! DO YOU GET THAT??
CBC doesn't want any strong, manly, Canadian voices. They do not want men to have pride, or role models. They want men to be weak, fragile... to hate themselves, their ancestors, and their country. That's legitimately how Liberal Government works. And CBC is their microphone.
Absolutely shameful how and why the fired Mr.Cherry, and on Remembrance Day. He's done more for Soldiers and Veterans than any of our Politicians in the last 40 years.

It might have been ok in the 40s or 50s. Lot has changed since then.
@@locutusv1 Don is talking about any person regardless of nationality. If you don’t wear a poppy on rememberance day you aren’t respecting our fallen soldiers. You are making it seem like Don is talking about a specific group of people which he is not.
Well, he was imposing his opinion and not everyone has the same view of war. If you experienced real war with real violence you wouldn’t be supporting Don cherry for it. I don’t even believe in war so I’ve never wore a puppy in my life cuz I am all for peace not violence.
But noone "woke up " !) And realizes we are under attack. Its scary. He got fired for this.. wow.. just step back and think who is offended by this and hunt them down
They f'g fired him for that? For being grateful to our veterans? American here, but respect all who fought. Don Cherry, thank you for keeping the patriotic spirit alive. F' the ones that don't appreciate it.
No, they fired him for talking shit about immigrants and visitors, who he tried to lump in to one class of others by calling them "You people." It's not as if this old fart was known for his subtlety.
@@tomshea8382 Canada is made up of immigrants. Immigrants from everywhere. Immigrants of every skin color. And yes, we should all wear a poppy. "You people" is something everyone says. Not just Don Cherry. And he's been saying that for 80 years. This was the last coaches corner as well as the last hockey night in canada I watched. I don't watch CBC any longer either. Is the spineless Ron Maclain still at the trough making a living?
Not just coaches corner, Hockey Night in Canada is ended. There’s nothing special about it anymore, it’s exactly like any other meaningless weeknight regular season game. As kids, we used to look forward to a leafs vs Habs or Battle of Ontario game on HNIC all week. Now it means nothing.
He honors the veterans and pays his respects to the young hockey players that have passed on and yet he is a bad guy for telling the truth. Miss you Cherry 🇨🇦
We as hockey fans, we all need to start an internet petition for the CDC to give Don Cherry his job back. He is a coaching legend and a patriot. To fire him is a blatant insult to the world of hockey. As long as people are being stupid, why not fire Karen Newman for singing the National Anthem at every Wings game ?
Here we are a couple of years after all the fuss. What Don stood for and stands for all Canadians should be standing for with him. Having a grand father and several uncles fight in WWll and a father who spent 25 years in the Canadian Armed Forces we were raised to be respectful of all veterans and to remember the sacrifices made. Don was and is right, all Canadians should buy and wear a poppy. We have veterans to thank for the freedoms and way of life we have today.
I feel you on that regard but when you mention "milk and honey", it takes the whole concept of the poppy out the window. Cherry was indirectly mentioning immigrants and this is the end result.
@@SenorAspie And?.. Hey, I have an idea. I'm not in Canada, but why doesn't Canada just treat these immigrants that you mention, just like Canadians get treated in the immigrant's home country?. Oh wait.. there is likely a reason that they left their home country to come to Canada.. Could it be because of the "milk and honey" that you mention?.. Or is it because they get treated worse in Canada?. If we treated people the same way in our Country, that we would get treated in their's, they would not be here. Period.
It was a poor choice of words, and he had a opportunity to clarify but didnt. Instead of "you people come here" he should have said "Canadians" he singled out immigrants while there are many Canadians who really dont gaf about the poppy of history of this country.
I'm watching this years later and I still fail to understand why he was let go. We all know Don speaks from the heart and his passion for the subject got the better of him at that moment. For that passion he pays the price of being out cast by an overly sensitive and vocal group of people whom I'm not even sure watched the show on a regular basis. I didn't always agree with what Don was saying or how he said it, I was even myself a bit insulted at times and yet I respected that it was his point of view and I don't always have to agree.
Cherry was removed because he hijacked Remembrance Day to launch an attack on immigrants. He’s a guy who’s never served but likes to dress up like a veteran in a Legion blazer. More people should wear poppies and remember the sacrifices of veterans, yes. But it’s just not true to claim (as he did) that visible minorities are less likely than white people to wear a poppy. The biggest drop-off in poppy wearing is generational - young Canadians of all races think that wearing a poppy is a marker of being a xenophobic redneck, and Cherry was just reinforcing that. I agree with the people who say Ron Maclean was weak- he should have called out Cherry’s racist bs live on air instead of waiting until the next day like he did.
5:44 he said something like "you people" but he was only talking about dickheads that dont support our nations history and wont wear poppies for remembrance day. They just "cancelled" him cuz hes old fashioned. My friend and i were watching, and as soon as he said it we both knew it was over.
He was let go by pressure from the private company Sportsnet. They caved to the pressure, when CBC had Coach's Corner, Don was untouchable. CBC always protected Don's freedom of speech. As you know if ya watched Coach's Corner over the years, he's said worse things.
After Peter Mansbridge retired, the canceling of Don Cherry was officially the death of the CBC of the old days. A CBC that was still a respectable institution that represented Canadian values and patriotism.

Don Cherry shall be remembered as former head coach of the Boston Bruins. But he shall be remembered especially as the host of Coacher's Corner on Saturday nights during the first intermission of Hockey Night in Canada on CBC. Ron MacLean did counterpart to him very well; he did what he had to do on the show. That was the most watched TV segment in Canada. Everybody, anybody may agree or disagree with Don Cherry's comments on his show, but one thing is sure; no matter what he said, Don Cherry shared to viewers of CBC's Hockey Night in Canada his passion for the game of hockey. Saturday nights won't be the same without him and Ron MacLean on Hockey Night in Canada. Don Cherry is a true Canadian legend and he shall be missed by all hockey fans from coast to coast. Hockey Night in Canada will never be the same without both, Don Cherry and Ron MacLean, his counterpart. Both of them should enter the Hockey Hall of Fame, if it's not already done yet. Both of them will be very missed by all viewers of CBC's Hockey Night in Canada. Finally, I agree with Don Cherry: everybody, anybody should buy a poppy and wear it on Remembrance Day to remember those who fought and died for justice and freedom worldwide during World War I and II. They never returned home, but they shall never be forgotten. Hail Canadian veterans who served our country for justice and freedom on all planet Earth. Hail Canadian soldiers who defended our homeland in both World Wars for liberty throughout the lands.

And we should all have a choice on how we like to express our gratitude or not. Don Cherry Canadian hero
Sucks this is how we went out, such a legend
We miss Don standing by our veterans every coaches corner every week.
You enjoy your freedom thank a veteran 🇨🇦
I'm glad he stuck up for vets Canadian and American veterans
Mclean nods his head and gives a thumbs up and then throws grapes under the the bus. What a cowardly weasel

Difference is that Grapes has made his "fuck you" money a long time ago. And he's made that money being himself over a long career. Mclean is nothing without HNIC, so he sided with the hand that fed him.

Now Trudeau, the "leader" of Canada, calls a large population of Canada "those people"...and nothing happens. Crickets. Very sad. Miss you Mr Cherry, a truly great Canadian.
And Trudeau also told a vet "You ask for too much"
Broke my heart to see that vet's face. Harper also said, "We owe them no moral obligation."
The disrespect for our brave vets comes from all parties.
It is a shame folks are making this a left vs right issue because the disrespect comes from both sides of the aisle.
The left conveniently forgets what Trudeau said, the right forgets what Harper said.
@@leperlord7078 when my dad returned to Winnipeg, there was a victory parade. After it was over my dad's regiment went into a hotel bar and were refused service because they were native. I admire him for this ❤
Don reminds me of my grandpa. We used to sit and watch the Don Cherry Highlight videos together as a kid. He also looks like Don and talks like him to, Don Cherry is a Canadian Legend and YOU People know it!

He said far worse many times, but everyone now knows, or they should, that a global agenda was just around the corner, and him getting canadians feeling canadian was in the way of the globalist program...Too bad he didnt consult with someone like me, who wrote a book ten years ago, explaining what was coming...Knowing don he might have listened.

Agreed, Ron had the chance to defend newcomers, but he sat in silence. Absolutely typical
On top of all this, the veterans ALL hate this guy Cherry. His statement was straight up a knee to the balls to the veterans. If you want to advertise the poppy and promote it, OK. Keep the veterans and poppies the subject not drag other issues instead making people ask what's going on here.

Brutal dismissal of a Canadian Patriot and Legend. Truer words could not be spoken; Canadian Vets making the sacrifice enabling Canada to endure. Asking those born in Canada and those immigrating in to respect the Canadian way of life while reaping the benefits...not one thing wrong with that sentiment. Good for you Don!
His message targeted immigrants and refugees! It was completely disrespectful. Many refugees arrive here from war-torn countries barely able to speak English and have no idea what a poppy is. He views immigrants as parasites.
Definition of a patriot: loves his country, hates its people.
God forbid a man have a opinion in 2021. We are literally swelling with immigration. The same countries immigrating to Canada would not willingly become the minority in their own countries. At the end of the day the immigration is done to provide big business with cheap labor. Woke people are definitely useful idiots for the elites. Always going crazy for surface information, never going beyond the thin veneer of the subjects they claim to be passionate about. Ultimately he made a minor comment about showing respect to the country you want to be a part of, which is what immigrants used to do including my grandparents. I guess the thought police detected a sentence that wasn’t “my what crazy weather we are having”
@@hotcoffeegaming3397 110% agree. Diversity is a great thing. My parents immigrated from Europe back in the 50's. They assimilated nicely into Canadian society and contributed to the local community. The thing is, is diversity needs to happen naturally and not be forced. Many big businesses hire foreign temporary workers from 3rd world countries because it IS cheap labour. However, there is way too many foreign workers and foreign university students from the same 3rd world nations.
Grapes should have used better wording but he has always said, "You people/kids out there". His heart of gold has always been in the right place even whenever I disagreed with him.

This made me resent Ron so much for selfishly keeping quiet and not defending his supposed “partner.” What a little weasel just like I always knew he was. Don was speaking facts and he didn’t deserve this at all. People are so soft. Also I ended up meeting Don only a few months after he got fired. Classiest guy ever! I even watch a gthl aaa game with him, such a wise guy!
Theres a lot more to that story.. they were both on thin ice after the Labatt thing.
My parents weren’t born in Canada. I wear poppies. I also will do some work with our honourable men and women. He shouldn’t have been fired
Again. He wasn't fired for what he said, he was fired for refusing to apologize for it. Big difference
@@joescott4778 He doesn't need to apologize for what he said because he didn't say anything wrong.
@@hottuna2006 That's your opinion. Obviously Sportsnet had a different one
@@hottuna2006 Yep agreed, cancel culture and idiots like Joe Scott.
I have never bought a poppy before. Not because I don't want to, it's because we were not properly educated to do so. But after listening to Don, I feel ashamed for not having done so earlier. I will buy a poppy for every chance I get from now on.
Btw, I miss Coach's Corner.
Thank you 🙏
Cheers👍🇨🇦
Watched this live when it aired. Still have mad love for Grapes. thanks for sharing.
I loved when Don refused to apologize and thought it was rock solid when Bobby Orr was quick to put himself out there to defend him publicly. All the years of CC... a spot with little time between periods and that guy always paid tribute to the fallen... Police, Fire, Military and others.... to the kids... he always made time to pay tribute. He showed us tears and heartbreak. I love my country too Don, cheers brother.
