Great video! My Zx4RR has the same issue using the quick shifter from 1st to 2nd gear. Sometimes too much that I've gotten used to clutching into 2nd to avoid accidentally getting into Neutral. Unfortunately, purchasing a Sato Racing Shift Spindle Holder did little to correct the problem. Hey, this might be an issue with your throttle position, atleast it has been a couple times for me. So here is an example scenario, where I had troubles upshifting. Im in 1st and go to 30mph or so, which is the speed limit. Then the throttle valves are quite open to pump air. But since 30 is the speed limit, I wanna reduce throttle and shift up a couple of gears. I think the bike/quickshifter does not like it when you wanna upshift but also reduce throttle input. That sucks the spindle did help but I appreciate the info, I’ll have to check out the rear sets I really need a set for this bike. I bet that m4 is insane lol good choice.
I had the Orange '72 Kawasaki 2 stroke triple. It was 30 pounds heavier with a full tank. I went for way much higher gearing. It only had five but it felt it too fast and too noisy. I weighed 110 lbs 5'10. A real Nerd. I felt the first gear was unnecessary .I was young and weighed not much more than a "Chick" It pulled off the line fine in second if I put up the revs a bit. Strangely, the 500 Kawasaki seemed to hit 60 miles an hour that way before it hardly crossed the intersections, without wheelies. Well, that was a long time ago but I think I could do it without doing any wheelies that seemed so easy over 80 miles per hour. Hmmm.. Strange bike, No brag. As a larger man tall and heavier, it's nice to have a bike. A sport bike that is, that's quite comfortable stock. Rode it 4hrs home after purchase and other then stiff leg i was comfortable I loved it. Maybe my big man bussy grips the seat as I dont slide.
@@williamardenjr116 I am 6'2 and about 275. It's a more relaxed riding position than other sport bikes. Which is nice. The only part where I believe you would run into an issue is. Your left leg would feel a little crunched. After a longer ride, you can get adjustable sets though. My biggest suggestion is to look for a Kawasaki demo day near you. Check their website and sign up for a test ride.
How's it going brother? I am looking for my first bike, budget not an issue, would you consider the zx4rr a good platform to learn and grow in ? Also, would you get the zx4rr over the zx4r ? I feel the value in the zx4rr is better since you high end suspension. Thanks and enjoy your day.
Hey Alex, I do think it’s a good learning platform and once you get used to it get the restriction removed and you will have a whole new bike. I agree, the extra 500 ish $ is worth the KQS and better suspension. Let me know if ow what you end up getting.
i was looking at exhaust right away but now that I've had some time on the bike i think ima leave the stock pipes on it. once you get down under the screen and wind it out the induction howl sounds amazing
nice bro, thats what I keep trying to say. I was good without the tune it's just an awesome bike. once you start getting used to it and you do the tune it will be like getting a new bike
The looks are on point. I’d like some advice for Me going from a z650 to this makes me wonder if I should skip this and go for the zx6r instead. No interest in going to the track and that’s why I’m thinking I don’t want a zx6 because I’ll almost never need the power the 6 has but if I get a second bike and it feels like a second learner bike then I won’t be happy.
I want one of these so bad...a first bike that isnt a death rocket that is still "light" enough to throw around. This is like all the sound with none of the drama. The $ jump from a ninja 400 is significant, however. If im honest with myself a n400 would be completely fine...but the noises this makes...its why i bought a yxz vs "regular" sxs, despite the yxz being built on an ancient platform vs comp. So...tempted...
Ninja 400 is like a completely different league from this, i am talking about the unrestricted, "default" version that makes almost 80hp. It's like comparing MT-07 to 09.
try Highway 49 Auburn to Placerville and Salmon Falls Road / Pilot Hill never mind the scenery looked too green i thought it was NorCal i am coming from a ZX10R and Concours 14, the ZX4RR is a perfect inner city bike for me i had a lot of fun in San Francisco on a Ninja 300
I'd rather they sell bikes with an easily removable detune than do what a lot of other manufacturers are doing these days, just giving up and stop selling their flagship sportbikes.
When you got your ECU flashed, did you get the results of the HP and Torque gained? Like did you get a chart showing a comparison of before and after results?
Really enjoying all the vids on your channel! Especially the maintenance ones, since I haven't found a Clymer/Haynes for this bike. Does one exist? I have been riding for 20+ years and have owned a dozen different bikes of various displacements and riding styles (supersport, naked, supermoto, etc.). I'm loving my ZX4RR so far, perfect amount of power to enjoy on the street; but also planning to get back to the track for the first time in 10+ years later this summer.
Thanks man I really appreciate that. So yes but I haven’t seen either of those. I bought the Maintenance manual from kawi which is awesome. You will love this thing on a track! Did you remove the restriction yet?
Great, I’ll see if I can find the Kawi maintenance manual. I’m still working through the break-in, just picked it up a few weeks ago. I’ve got a Yoshi slip-on and a DNA air filter, I’m gonna send the ECU to Graves to be reflashed after break-in, and swap the air filter at the same time.
Have you gotten a notification from Kawasaki Motors about a factory directed modification? On certain eligible units, the existing drain holes do not allow the frame to drain completely after riding in the rain or washing the motorcycle. This can lead to paint delamination caused by rust.
I called yesterday and the manager of the shop said she had gotten a 23 page instruction booklet to read today and let me know when she gets the parts to do the work. I'm the only one in my area that has one so there wont be a waiting line. @@ScoutsOut
I've notice, with mine, if you don't have the throttle completely closed it doesn't wan to down shift. I installed a steering dampener on mine and it holds the line better in curves.
I think the expanation for this is that, since you want to go at the same speed the bike needs to raise its rpm accordingly to make the gear change smooth. For this automatic rev matching to occur, the Ecu needs complete control over the throttle valves. But since your throttle is still open, you still have control over the valves and they are sort of locked. With no throttle input, the Ecu raises rpm accordingly with adjusted throttle position and fuel injection to match.
I hadn’t thought about that yet, I seen they have one for the 4rr but I think it just removes the last few mm’s of play, I’ll have to look into the 10rr’s
How do you like the brakes? I have both the R7 and the ZX4R and I’ll say that the R7 brakes are light years ahead of the ZX4R’s. Looking to upgrade them soon
@@ScoutsOut I’ve never swapped brakes before, but it looks like the same kind of brembo master cylinder can be rigged up. Maybe a winter or early spring project?
As much as I looooove the idea of the zx4rr I really don't think one can justify it's price. It's waaay overpriced. Plenty of excellent-condition zx6r around. Way better bike (I mean even a new zx6r is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better value than the zx4rr!). Financially it's just a dumb proposition. I have a 2011 Honda CB400 and 1997 CBR250rr ... I have my fill of small displacement 4-cylinder bikes. The zx4rr will have a very short shelf life. Kawa will stop making it in about 3 years. It's pointless.
What a great bike! I only concern is roominess in the cockpit. I am avg height, but around 230 lbs. So I wonder how it would "fit". I like the upright ergonomics at my age, I prefer to relax. So its mostly about not looking like a 400lb guy on a 125cc!
Haha I hear ya, I’m 210lb with gear and 5’10”. I don’t feel that way on the bike, it’s roomy enough to move around and easy to get off the side of the bike imo
Ive currently got a vfr 400 nc30, which i love. I am considering replacing it in the future with a newer bike. Is the zx4rr compariable? Is it reletively comfortable for a sports bike? What is it like at lower rpms around towns?
wow, bike sounds pretty good with the just the graves slip on. I'm trying to reserve a 40th anniversary edition and do the ecu, full graves titanium low mount exhaust and air filter. I hope it's not too loud and drive me crazy. eh, screw it... louder the better. haha! nice review scout!
@@ScoutsOut I can't do a loud exhaust. Have nerve damage - ringing. Even wearing earplugs - which I do even mowing the lawn - isn't worth the risk of more damage. Anyway, would an ECU upgrade be useless without an exhaust?
Yea I hear that man, my ears are bad too. I sadly just started wearing earplugs as I don’t want them to get any worse. As for the ecu plush with out mods, yes it will help and allow you to change other things like engine brake reduction, cooling fan on off times, shift points. Lots can be done and the bike can gain power and run better with a tune. Hope this helps 🍻
I was wondering when you were going to get her back out!! Saw the Ash video where he did the Graves graphics. He did nee one putting on Graves race fairing. Looks evil. Given your track day experience. Where do you feel you will go with the 4RR's front suspension? Leave alone, or upgrade? More 4RR vids! Be safe, have fun!
Haha yea bro after I bent the handle bars with my canyon dancers taking it to the track I was pissed and just left it till I got some new clip ons. As for suspension I will probly start tweeting it soon and seeing how far I can push it before I start buying any upgrades for it, it’s been nice how good stock it is performing but it is really soft, so will see
People focus far too much on displacement alone to look at what the bike actually is. Honestly I'd love to get one of these but I'm not sure I ever will. Only time will tell, I do live in Europe so we get all 77hp stock. Maybe in the future when I'm eventually over my RC390.
Great long term review info! Just one question, how tall are you and what's your inseam? I'm looking at the 4RR as my next step up from a beginner bike, and at 6'2'' with a 34 inch (almost 35) inseam I'm worried it might be a bit cramped for me.
@@ScoutsOut Thanks. Sadly can't sit on the bike as most bikes are on order only and there are barely any showrooms in the proper sense of the word. I mean, the height and inseam difference isn't huge, so maybe I'd at least be fine for a bit until I either got used to the ergos or got a higher seat and some rearsets.
Do you see anything from those stealth mirrors? I really like how they look and want to get them but everybody says they're just for looks and you can't see shit. Just based of your POV in the video I can see plenty, but how is it for you the rider? -fellow kawi rider

is lighter than 1000cc and easier to operate. It's light, so it's easy to stop, so I think it's safer and more comfortable than 1000cc. Moreover, the price is reasonable. Kawasaki is the world's most advanced company that makes jet anti-submarine patrol aircraft and rockets called the P1, so we can make great bikes.
Hi Scout, I'm thinking of also changing my windshield. I see you have a zero gravity double bubble. Would you recommend going to the double bubble at 1 inch taller, or would you recommend going 2 inch taller than stock?
I am confused. It's restricted because of noise in the US, but y'all can slap a full aftermarket exhaust without db-killer and just ride it legally on the street ? Same with those huge tuned V8 muscle cars that are just as loud. While in EU you don't get restricted power but you can't use a full exhaust, or even a slip-on without a db-killer cause it wakes up the whole neighborhood.
This will be my first sportbike. I want something that sounds amazing without the possibility of losing my license or killing myself like the 600's or 1,000's, that I can row through the gears and enjoy the sound without severely breaking the law. Just curious if the exhaust note is so loud that you have to wear earplugs, and does it leave your ears ringing?
Perfect choice! It’s a little loud but no ringing other than the ringing I already have in my ears lol. Really though what is bad for our hearing is the wind noise and we should always wear ear plugs on a motorcycle
Howdy, I had a Ninja 400 that I had converted to full track bike that also had the missed shift issues. The missed shift issue happened before I put in a quick shifter and after. A clutch detent spring seemed to handle it. Maybe Graves has one now for the 400RR? Otherwise, maybe your local shop can dial in the quick shifter or find a fix?
I just recently last month got the KRT 2024 4rr and I’m Currently having a issue were I’m in first and go to shift and instead of going into second it goes in neutral happened at least 4 times since I had it
I'm kind of wanting to keep my bike pretty stock and not remove to much but I want a full akrapovic exhaust what tune stage do you suggest I pretty much just would like the full power of the bike and not bother anything else tending I just use it to ride around town
I'm going into my third year of owning a Ninja 400, I'm looking for something new with more power but it seems like the market doesn't really have anything for me. I'm not really sure I want a 600, and they are a bit more than I'd like to spend, the tier just below that with the R7, GSX-8 etc are really appealing but having a parallel twin is a complete deal breaker for me. I think I might end up going with a naked bike like a Z900 even though I'd prefer full fairings. Any suggestions?
I would yes to both but, if you want to get better and riding and are interested in racing but don’t have a lot of experience zx4rr, if you just want to ride faster and only ride highways 636. That’s my 2 cents
When you say the R7 is faster do you mean quicker to get up to speed, or faster top speed as well? I had a 2015 FZ07 in 2014 and I couldn't get that thing past 225kmph, it was a bit of a dog after like 140kmph. I did love that bike, I'm not trying to down talk it. I found it was competitive and a little quicker up to 120 against 600cc sport bikes, after that they would just make me feel like I was standing still.
@@ScoutsOut ok good to know. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the 40th anniversary one, I'm going to trade in my Z400 I got new in 2019. I worked at a dealership for 3 years so I got it at cost. Would you say it's worth it? I also have a Royal Enfield for putting around so I'm looking for someone with more speed but still really flickable like Z400 or the FZ07.

As far as acceleration goes the R7 just is faster because it has tons of torque at all times. The ZX4RR might have a slightly higher top end but in terms of acceleration, especially low end, it just doesn't have the torque to keep up with the R7
Haha so true, I love a n400 but that sound just destroys it for me, which is why I never cared to put an exhaust on it, I just rode it for a training toy and wanted it as quiet as it could be lol
Great quick review! I really like the color scheme on the KRT editions, especially the new ones with the ZX7 graphics. My 22 400' has the KRT graphics. Just from looking at it, the seating position is like the 400. I agree with you, its kinda of slippery and pushes you right into the fuel tank! Not the biggest fan of it, for obvious reasons. Still a comfortable bike. My biggest complaint has to be the price. It's right there with better equipped and more powerful bikes. I mean look at what you get for less than a thousand more in a street triple 765R. Yeah, it doesn't have a fairing but man everything else, just makes the ZX4RR seem way overpriced. Still the high revving inline 4 sounds great and kudos for Kawasaki at least giving us something that is a lot of fun! Now, let see if Honda is really going to give us the CBR500RR inline screaming 4! Good time to be a motorcycle enthusiast, thats for damn sure! I have the zx4r and I added the KQS to it, imo it is the perfect street bike, 70hp is a great number for the street.
Nice dude, I haven’t seen an 4r yet. What color did you get? I would have put the KQS on it first thing to. I agree it’s plenty for the street

Great job on the review as always mate! :D
thanks bro!
Kawasaki should make a 436cc version like the 636, and somehow lighten the weight by at least 30lbs. That would be a dream come true 😌
Haha yea, the 30lb would be awesome too lol
I will be watching all your videos.
Since it is a "small" bike, May I ask your height and weight?@@ScoutsOut
Full titanium exhaust and lithium battery will shave off 30lb
@@quanwick4516 Yes, I guess, I am too old to ride any more so I just like the videos. Wish I was young again and had my H1-B back.

Nice dude! Congrats on the new bike. It’s surprisingly comfortable!
How tall and all? I’m 6’4and 250
@@williamardenjr116 I am 6'2 and about 275.
I agree, the exhaust is a nice touch but the intake sounds amazing as well. That is something I thing Kawasaki has always done well
Great review of the pint sized Ninja and I'm glad to hear about the stock tires being decent.
Thank you!
I love this bike, no tune on mine and i cant get enough of itt
nice bro, thats what I keep trying to say. I was good without the tune it's just an awesome bike. once you start getting used to it and you do the tune it will be like getting a new bike
@@ScoutsOut the last sentence you said is exactly what my uncle said would probably happen, so im in no rush, thanks for the content !
Nice, thanks bro. Enjoy that bike
The 4rr is a really fun bike but if you want more power the 6 is probably a better choice.
No doubt bro, I had a n400 for 4 years and I loved it but the sound! Just makes it so much more engaging and enjoyable
Ninja 400 is like a completely different league from this, i am talking about the unrestricted, "default" version that makes almost 80hp. It's like comparing MT-07 to 09.
Yea true, can’t really compare the two
try Highway 49 Auburn to Placerville and Salmon Falls Road / Pilot Hill
never mind the scenery looked too green i thought it was NorCal
i am coming from a ZX10R and Concours 14, the ZX4RR is a perfect inner city bike for me
i had a lot of fun in San Francisco on a Ninja 300
Haha close though just a ways south. I’ve rode a lot of the roads up in auburn, so nice up there!
Don't what it is but the joy of revving and squeezing the snot out of a low cc/HP machine is so much fun.
I hear ya! I love it!
I'd rather they sell bikes with an easily removable detune than do what a lot of other manufacturers are doing these days, just giving up and stop selling their flagship sportbikes.
Yea man, that would be nice!
When you got your ECU flashed, did you get the results of the HP and Torque gained? Like did you get a chart showing a comparison of before and after results?
No, it’s a mail in tune so I would have to take it for a DYNO to see exactly what I got
But on the website it should what they got out of there bike
Great review man, love those roads too
Thanks bro I’m so lucky to have all these nice back roads man there awesome
Yea I did, I still need to set up a time to get it done
Yea, that could be it for me. I just put a steering damper on my r7 and love it, I will have to add one to the 4rr soon as well.
Well said themech that’s what’s happening
I'm considering getting the ZX10R throttle tube from Graves @@ScoutsOut
I hadn’t thought about that yet, I seen they have one for the 4rr but I think it just removes the last few mm’s of play, I’ll have to look into the 10rr’s

I totally, I don’t like them either

Thanks bro Prost
Agreed, it will probably be a fad but it’s suck a blast
For US and Canada restrictions bike,Just go for remapping…You feel the top end power!
Yea totally worth it
I have mine flashed and full exhaust. completely different.
Nice dude I bet it’s awesome, I’m looking forward to the extra power for it

How tall are you? I'm 6'6" so I'm wonder if ergonomics are gonna effect me much differently
I’m 5’10” might be a little tight for ya, you would really need to sit on one
What a great bike! I only concern is roominess in the cockpit. I am avg height, but around 230 lbs. So I wonder how it would "fit". I like the upright ergonomics at my age, I prefer to relax. So its mostly about not looking like a 400lb guy on a 125cc!
Haha I hear ya, I’m 210lb with gear and 5’10”. I don’t feel that way on the bike, it’s roomy enough to move around and easy to get off the side of the bike imo
Looks amazing in the 40th Anniversary graphic
I know man the 40th looks awesome
Ive currently got a vfr 400 nc30, which i love. I am considering replacing it in the future with a newer bike. Is the zx4rr compariable? Is it reletively comfortable for a sports bike? What is it like at lower rpms around towns?
I sadly haven’t rode either of those bikes so hard for me to compare but I will say the zx4rr is really nimble and very comfortable for a sport bike
wow, bike sounds pretty good with the just the graves slip on. I'm trying to reserve a 40th anniversary edition and do the ecu, full graves titanium low mount exhaust and air filter. I hope it's not too loud and drive me crazy. eh, screw it... louder the better. haha! nice review scout!
Thanks, the 40th looks so good!
@@ScoutsOut Thanks. It's surprising Europe gets the unrestricted version but we don't.
Yea so true, it’s just a blast to ride!
Is it worth the price hike over the ninja 500? I cant decide what i want but I don't want to spend more than needed just for commuting
If you don’t care about the sound difference and you are only commuting, the 500 will get better fuel economy, be more comfortable, and cost much less
Oh yes... this is a keeper for me... just way too fun
Haha yea bro this little bike is awesome
Great long term review info!
Just one question, how tall are you and what's your inseam?
I'm looking at the 4RR as my next step up from a beginner bike, and at 6'2'' with a 34 inch (almost 35) inseam I'm worried it might be a bit cramped for me.
thank you! im 5'10" with a 32 in inseam. you probably need to sit on it to find out but also rear sets and seat change can fix it if its to small
Dang that sucks, but yea I’m sure you will be fine on it and if not you can change up the ergos
@@ScoutsOut It is what it is, but yeah the 4RR seems a bit more accommodating to people of different heights than other sportbikes.

is lighter than 1000cc and easier to operate. It's light, so it's easy to stop, so I think it's safer and more comfortable than 1000cc. Moreover, the price is reasonable. Kawasaki is the world's most advanced company that makes jet anti-submarine patrol aircraft and rockets called the P1, so we can make great bikes.
Yea, kawi is a good company

No you can’t ride it around legally, it’s just a gamble til you get pulled over and handed a fine.
Yup, even when we buy the exhaust we have to sign a waiver from the store you buy it from saying it’s for closed course use only
This will be my first sportbike.

That’s a good idea man, I’ll look into it thanks
I just recently last month got the KRT 2024 4rr and I’m Currently having a issue were I’m in first and go to shift and instead of going into second it goes in neutral happened at least 4 times since I had it

Check out the TST tune, there are two tunes to choose from. The second tune they have is for a full Akra
Any suggestions?
just get a zx6r. you wont be dissapointed.
What about this 4 cylinder 400. It would do the job nicely
just jump to a R1- literally no regrets
Maybe this year the r9 will come out, it will be a triple

Ohh bro in person it’s so dang exhilarating
Hey man , how tall are you? I’m 5’7 & I’m wondering if I would be able to flat foot this bike. Curious on how it sits compared to the 400.
It’s close to the 400, I’m 5’10 and I can flat foot it. I wouldn’t be worried it’s awesome
Would you trade in a ninja 650 for a zx4rr? Or am I better off getting a zx6r?
I would yes to both but, if you want to get better and riding and are interested in racing but don’t have a lot of experience zx4rr, if you just want to ride faster and only ride highways 636. That’s my 2 cents
Does the 399 size reflect cheaper insurance or do they still compare it to bigger sport bike rates?
For me no it didn’t, it was high at first. I would reach out to multiple insurance companies to get a decent quote

Wait.. your r7 feels faster? I just bought a r7 and I kinda wish j bought this bike
What I really should have done was buy a zx6r. I didn’t know they were like 11.2k and r7 9399 so about 1800 more msrp wise
Yea it feels a little faster and I get better track times on the r7
I’ve already had a 636, it’s a great bike but I really enjoy these smaller bikes
Yeah I love my R7, maybr I’ll love it even more once I install stage 2 air filter , exhaust and a tune. I know I’m going to end up buying another bike here in next few months lol. The bike craze has hit me. I’ll always keep r7 but either a zx4r or zx6r
As far as acceleration goes the R7 just is faster because it has tons of torque at all times. The ZX4RR might have a slightly higher top end but in terms of acceleration, especially low end, it just doesn't have the torque to keep up with the R7
that's every bike, even the 30k liter bikes that need a ecu flash

I'm glad you're keeping it because it really looks like a fun bike. I feel the same way about my Ninja 400 Of course I didn't leave mine stock! Keep up the great job on the reviews and the content is awesome. The roads you get to ride on are awesome!

I did the tune to get it, I just think it’s ok as a beginner bike without it and get it later when your comfortable with the bike
@@ScoutsOut that’s smart! How different is the ride compared to a ninja 400
Even without the tune it’s a considerably better experience, sound speed ergos just all around better bike. With the tune it isn’t even comparable to the n400 imo
How tall are You. Nice Bike!🇳🇱
5’10” , thanks!
its 80hp here in PH
Nice! That’s a big difference
@@ScoutsOut the zx25r is 50 hp i think they restrict thr 4rr to make it the same as the 25rr
That would make sense
So in the initial motor section u talked a lot about the restriction and completely skipped how the engine feels pulls and works on curves etc..i mean...wtf!
Sorry about that, but she does feel amazing in the corners
How tall are you?
5’10” or 70”
I want this in 40th Anniversary Edition to go along side my R7 60th Anniversary Edition. Just so they can grow old together as garage queens while I spend 90 % of my riding on my beloved old Triumph 1050. But then A) three favourite brands covered B) milage on these two sport bikes will kept low C) I will jave a twin, a triple and a four cylinder 😊
Haha nice! The anniversary models for kawi have really grown on me me lately. That would be an awesome set of bikes
